Anyways, guitars are easily the most popular instruments, tons of people buy fairly expensive ones and only ever bother learning a few chords. Nobody just decides to buy a flute one day. Most music stores I see aren't that bad, though.

guitar is among the easier instruments to play at beginner-intermediate level but one of the harder to master, I still wouldn't say the hardest though, probably not even in the top 5, I used to play french horn and that was pretty damn hard
(this is coming from an advanced level guitarist)

and regarding OP's question, it's because normies all think guitars are 'cool', in fact guitar might be the only instrument that's almost universally perceived as 'cool'
