A friend of mine played this for me, but I didn't really get it. What's the appeal? I'm genuinely curious.

no problem !
Last four things I listened to.
Bach's keyboard stuff really is much better through an organ than a piano. It isn't just a "organ's the main keyboard instrument that was popular during his time" thing either, he actually had it all planned out for organs.
I got into Actress when I started spending good money on headphones about a couple years back, and I think they really help with how much work is put into the sounds on RIP. Although I have yet to test it yet, I don't think this record would sound as good through crappy earbuds for example.
I love that psychedelic/tribal dub thing Forest Swords does. Not a single track on the album that has conventional drumset sounding percussion. Though I can appreciate but personally enjoy the most popular track from it the least (Thor's Stone).
I also don't get the dislike for Syro. It's not absolutely groundbreaking, but as far as I know, it's the only analog style record made in this "IDM" style, giving it a particular warm kinda feel. If there are any more completely analog "IDM" records in a similar vein of Aphex's work (large variety of sounds using as a result an enormous amount of equipment), I am open to suggestions.

I wish more of Future's tracks had a fuller sound akin to Codeine Crazy. Otherwise his stuff's too minimal sounding imo with not enough technical rapping ability to justify it.

The best tracks on this are really good. But the rest of the album's kinda boring. Definitely would recommend the singles, Deadz, and What The Price from it.

Lately all I can tolerate is Free Improv and Dub, not sure why.
