How does /mu/ go about writing their songs?

A number of different ways. I usually start with a melody. Before I go anywhere near an instrument I try to imagine as much of the melody as possible, the timing it will have, and the exact notes, until I can hear it clearly enough in my head to hum it to myself. This might take hours. I then record myself humming to make sure the essence of the melody isn't lost in the process of playing it on an instrument. When I have got the melody down I usually look for single note harmonies that work well with the different parts of the melody. After I have settled on these harmonies I build the theoretical chord framework around them and begin writing variations and progressions for the rest of the song.

instrumentally, I'm usually high or just talked to the girl I've had feelings for for a while, and I play guitar and either improvise or play riffs i know and start to divert until I have an "aha" moment, I build on it and think of ideas and play them and put it all together in a few hours and record and save to finish later, with lyrics i have to be feeling really emotional, if not I'll just be doing something and happen to think of a lyric and start writing, the songs span many genres and reflect what I happen to be listening to at the time, I don't necessarily try to write the song within a genre, I just try to make something that sounds like the emotion I'm feeling
