Honestly, I've studied music theory (took one month of piano lessons) and got bored after I found out it doesn't really affect listening at all. Yeah it's a little nice to know what lingo musicians use and stuff, but honestly it's just useless information unless you want to compose music yourself. There's just nothing to be gained from thinking "aha, they're using quarter notes!" when listening to a song. You just have to shut up and enjoy it.

But I already know how to play an instrument and read music for said instrument. Why would I spend years in college studying music theory just to enhance my enjoyment of what is simply a hobby for me? Seems like an awful lot of effort for not much in return. And it's not like my taste is being particularly limited by lack of music theory knowledge, I can enjoy plenty of classical music too without needing to understand how it was composed.
