Grimes: Actually, I was in a program at McGill called Electroacoustics, where we studied a lot of how the brain interacts with music. So by the time I actually started making music, I kind of had an understanding of frequencies and kind of how the brain responds to things, which I think really helped me as a producer: Even though I had no experience playing instruments and stuff, I kind of had a basic understanding of engineering. My learning curve was maybe a tiny bit shorter than maybe someone who hadn't studied that stuff.

Wait a fucking minute: I meant controversial on /mu/. Overall, Grimes had huge acclaim from public and highly respected critics. Maybe Grimes will not have the same impact as Bjork (because she's an indie artist, not a mainstream one) but she already has her own niche.

The only reason she isn't huge is her indie status. Everyone I've played AA for says "why don't I know this?" and they love it. The only thing anyone ever seems to recognize is Realiti and it's no where close to being the strongest track on the disc.
This will probably make more than a few people cringe, but maybe it's time for Grimes to sign a deal to re-release AA on a major with bonus tracks + vids, to get the play for pay she needs to blow up. I think at this point she's well enough respected all around to not loose creative control over her art and pull off a good deal. If it was going to happen indie, this should have done it, it hasn't and the disc is 2 years old. Music is art but it's also a business, she seems happy for what she's accomplished and make no mistake, she has pulled off a major feat, but close the deal.

Yes, it's business. More people should hear about her, she needs more popularity if she wants to be a cultural icon like Bjork. That's why /mu/ talks so much about Bjork than e.g. Lisa Germano. The former is a cultural icon, the latter just an underground artist.
