Well, The Velvet Underground & Nico is now officially 50 years old. What are your thoughts on this album?
>>
european son sucks
>>
>>71532947
love that song, do people hate it?
>>
>>71532938
I've been revisiting There She Goes Again weekly. I'm a sucker for Lou's pop songs.
>>
>>71532938
I can acknowledge the influence it has. I can acknowledge how important it was. I can acknowledge why it is an essential and considered one of the best.

But fuck me, I just think it's boring. I'm sure for the time it was in it sounded different or groundbreaking, but I have a really hard time enjoying this. I also think they were all self-absorbed assholes so that might be affecting my opinion.
>>
The tracks where lou reed is doing the gay voice are the best tracks

Prove me wrong, protip: you can't
>>
>>71533834
I'll be your mirror
>>
>>71532947
agreed
>>
Good shit. Not flawless, but certainly good. Most people who hate it are trying too hard.
>>
I really hate Heroin and European Son. But I love every other song. Femme Fatale especially. What a wonderful song.
>>
Out of the 4200+ albums I've heard, it's still in the Top 10
>>
>>71534843
wow, 4200+ is pretty specific, do you know for a fact that you've listened to at least that many?
>>
>>71534843
post your top 10 i'm curious

Maybe he has 4200 in his library and has heard them all you dunce.

>>71534993
Goes on way too long and the sound becomes grating near the end.
>>
I've always wondered, is the banana really a sticker?

alot of the buzz around this album was the andy warhol involvement and album cover

what artist would generate the most buzz for a band by giving them an album cover today?
>>
>>71535335

>andy warhol
>artist

don't go there.
>>
>>71535335
Banksy by far
>>
>>71535357
Probably true
>>
>>71535357
that's genius

>make a hardline commie album
>get banksy to cover it
>sell millions from that alone
>>
>>71532938
It remains one of the greatest albums ever made
>>
>>71533681
Please listen to the remaster. I listened to the original version and I had the same opinion. The band sounded like they could barely play their instruments, and while that may not be so far away from the truth, I couldn't for the life of me appreciate the album.
>>
i think it is bad
>>
>>71535002
>Goes on way too long and the sound becomes grating near the end.
Given that their intention was to make the song feel like taking heroin, it only makes sense that it sounds that way.
>>
>>71532947
Fuck you! That's one of the best songs on there.
Actually just get rid off all the Nico shit (EXCEPT All Tomorrow's Parties) and the album would be perfect.

>>71532994
Anybody who hates European Son has no right calling themselves a VU fan!
>>
>>71535357
The blur album think tank didnt get shitvwhen banksy's art was on the cover
>>
>>71532938
I've tried listening to this album but the songs just seem bland
nothing is catchy about it
>>
>>71536340
>nothing is catchy about it
Well, they weren't a pop band, so, why would you expect catchy songs on a noise rock album? Femme Fatale could be called catchy in some regard.
>>
>>71536340
>Sunday Morning
>Waiting For My Man
>Run Run Run
>There She Goes Again

Really? Nothing catchy about these songs? Are you even trying or is this just bait?
>>
>>71536395

proper rock music. enough said.
>>
>>71535335

Nobody fucking bought it at the time though.

It's really only gained its prestige in the years after its release, so its only fair to attribute that to the quality of the music.
>>
>>71536505
They were prints, but that doesn't change anything. It's still art to someone
>>
>>71534823
Femme Fatale is the weakest song on the album and the only one I've ever found that was improved by a 10/10 cover (see: Big Star)
>>
>>71536615
Nah, it's the best, senpai.
>>
The Nico songs are the worst on the album. She shouldn't have even been on it but Andy Warhol insisted despite the band not wanting her.
>>
>>71536706
How? Don't you think that her voice is unique to say the least? She didn't sound like every female vocalist today; somewhere in the realm of pseudo black soul divas. As far as vocal delivery is concerned, she was a far better vocalist than Lou Reed could ever hope to be. And he even admitted that he couldn't sing.
>>
>>71536706
I would've told Andy to fuck off
>>
>>71536706
You're a mad man. The combo is top notch. Fuck outta here.
>>
>>71536706
And yet The Marble Index and Desertshore are two of the best Velvet Underground family albums

That said, her songs are some of the worst but only because they are the shortest and have the tamest lyrics...that said, All Tomorrow's Parties is one of the best songs on the album, but not for the vocals
>>
>>71536725
Listen to Desertshore. It's haunting, cold, distant, desolate and reassuring and beautiful at the same time. Not many vocalists are able to achieve that.

I love to make fun of the liberal arts as much as any self respecting person. That being said I was forced to take a few art classes and I had good teachers who gave me perspective on art and why certain artists were able to gain notoriety.

Warhols art and his significance wasnt due to a cultural spazz out of retardation, but rather the context of his generation and what space he was putting that art out into.

Its easy to look at his work in 2017 and think its retarded. But there was much more too it. I'm not arguing he was some extremely talented person, but he was unique, and the work he put out during that era was very unique. Maybe 50 years later it looks simple and bland, but it wasnt back than
