I think you are right, but if anything I am happy that he took a step back. Could you imagine trying to sustain a career constantly trying to outdo your previous effort. It would have destroyed him artistically and probably kill him considering how bad he was in 1994 and how much worse he got by 2000.

He's just enjoying himself, making music that interests him and feels he doesn't have to impress anyone anymore. He's better off for it.
