Amazing band

>>
It's amazing how underrated they are on /mu/. They have so many great albums but the only ones I ever see being discussed are Disintegration and Pornography
>>
The best
>>
>>71531609

At a bare minimum Faith deserves respect. Woefully underappreciated album. That said, I don't think any of their records are outright bad. A few cruise around that 6/10 range but no honest stinkers in the lot.
>>
Anyone else feel like Bloodflowers was directly influenced by Smashing Pumpkins Adore?
>>
>>71531653
Faith is my second favourite, only behind Disintegration. I wish more people liked it but I guess it's one of the more obscure albums in their discography, and I agree about them not having any bad albums. The worst ones (WMS, S/T) are just kind of 'eh.'
>>
It's been almost 10 years since the last album.

Are they done?
>>
>>71530584
Yes. Head on the Door is my favorite, but also love Disintegration and Three Imaginary Boys
>>
>>71531958

I actually like both of those more than the average person, especially the S/T. Only songs I'm nonchalant about on that one are Before Three and Never, I actually dig the rest in some form or fashion.

>>71531977

They still tour and sell out stadiums and I think they did debut 2 songs not that long ago, probably from the unused half of 4:13 Dream.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo3a9owgrJw

Speaking of that, I recall Robert saying that there were plans to release that unused material sometime. Nothing set in stone and he might be as whimsical as ever about it, but it was in the cards.
>>
I think they should stop releasing new material and just keep touring. No real need for it, IMO. they've done all they needed to do at this point. their latest material hasn't been great.
>>
Seventeen seconds will always be my favorite of theirs.
>>
>>71532115

True that they've done all they needed to do but I don't hate their last few albums. Even 4:13 Dream has the double edged sword of being probably the most youthful sounding Cure album. Very fluffy and unrefined on the songwriting, but there's still a vibrancy to it that makes it passable. Reminds me a lot of WMS tracks like Strange Attraction or Jupiter Crash, for better or worse. I'd say the worst aspect of latter day Cure is that the drums have been pretty hit or miss since Jason jumped aboard.
>>
>>71532158

Seventeen Seconds is great when the songs actually sound finished. Too much of it sounds like incomplete sketches, though. Play For Today and A Forest are stone cold classics, though.
>>
>>71532066
I think the problem with the s/t for me is that all the songs sound too similar, and they seem to just blend in with one another. WMS, on the other hand, just has some bad songs, especially Gone! and The 13th.

Am I the only one who really likes this album, despite it being their poppiest?

It's probably my 2nd favorite of theirs behind Disintegration
>>
>>71532424

Gone! is one of my favorites from it, I've never been one for upbeat stuff but the way it stares its demons in the eyes and says "fuck it", I can swallow that pill. The 13th, it was an interesting experiment but whatever. For me, WMS's throwaways are Club America and just about every song after Numb. I think the record would be tighter with those 5 songs cut, maybe keeping Treasure for the sake of closer material or something. And I think S/T has some standout tunes - Lost and Us or Them draw pretty heavily from the Pornography sound, (I Don't Know What's Going) On and Taking Off feel like throwbacks to the KMKMKM era, and The Promise is arguably one of their best psych rock jams. The production's a bit heavy for the band I suppose but I feel there's some variation in the actual songs themselves.
>>
>>71532464

It's got some of their better tunes on it I think with From The Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Doing The Unstuck and A Letter to Elise. Overall it's solid, not one of my absolute favorites but it's in the top half of their discography.
>>
>>71532584
Fair enough that you like/dislike those songs then. What's your opinion on 4:13 Dream?
>>71532464
Wish is one of my favourites too, but I think their poppiest is Head on the Door
>>
>>71532641

I'm the one who said earlier that it's like a collision of Strange Attraction and Jupiter Crash, so in a way Wild Mood Swings 2.0, but in another I kind of get the feeling that it went for a more lackadaisical, dreamlike swagger on purpose. For a band 13 albums into their career it sounds weirdly loose and inexperienced so it wasn't the most successful effort across the board but hey, at least Underneath The Stars came out of it.
>>
>>71532464
Honestly one of my favorite records by them, behind only pornography and disintegration. I love the really huge guitar "epic" (for lack of a better word) tracks like Open and FTEOTDGS. I'd say it's more rock than pop though, aside from the main singles. Hugely underrated.
>>
>>71532630
>From The Edge of the Deep Green Sea
Holy fuck how did I forget about this song?

This and Show are GOAT live albums. I may like the version of At Night from Paris more than the album version. I miss when they had Porl and Perry and they could go for a three guitar onslaught.
>>
Why did they change the lyrics on Killing an Arab? Robert Smith doesn't seem like the type.
>>
>>71532854

Don't know because it's GOAT, though to be fair I've had the good fortune of getting caught in the rain while it was playing. A truly magical moment.
>>
>>71532913
I think he got tired of people misinterpreting it. It's based off a Camus book but even when it was released people took it the wrong way. I wish they'd just stop playing it instead of changing it though, it's kind of stupid. And it's been missing from reissues and multiple things with the song on it haven't been reissued like standing on a beach and the cure in orange (not sure if that's why they haven't been reissued but if it is it's pretty silly).
>>
>>71532913
what did they change?
>>
>>71532976
Killing Another
>>
>>71532976
He sings the line "killing an Arab" as "killing another" when they play it now, though they rarely play it anymore.
>>
The Head on the Door is one of the best pop albums ever written
>>
>>71533035

Coincidentally it's actually my least favorite album of theirs. Inbetween Days and Sinking are great, never did care too much for the rest though. Maybe A Night Like This on some days. Either way, it's probably the Cure album I revisit the least.
>>
>>71533067
The Baby Screams is pretty awful but I don't see how it could be worse than The Top or their last two albums
>>
>>71533004
wouldn't want to offend our sharia overlords now would we goyim
>>
i have tried so hard to like this band the past year but from what ive heard pretty overrated.

faith - literally nothing memorable from this album.

seventeen seconds - so much filler and weaker tracks. less vocals and not many memorable lyrics. "A forest" is great but I don't hear the classic status. Three and Play for today are good if I remember right.

Head on the door- first 4 are excellent. opener is one of their best songs. starts to drop in the 2nd half though. prob my fave overall. 7/10

disintegration - way overly long. i never liked plainsong or the title track, they are both way too long. fascination street, pictures of you, lullably, lovesong are 100% classics. rest is ok. bloated IMO.

not sure where to go from here or give up since those are said to be their best.
>>
>>71533167
pornography then call it quits
>>
>>71533101

I find The Top to be so odd as to be fascinating. If I'm not mistaken the band was kind of in a bad place when it was recorded, and besides it's when their penchant for psychedelia really manifested itself, leading to songs like The Snakepit or Homesick. I actually quite like the S/T, and 4:13 Dream is about on par with Head on the Door for me if not slightly better.
>>
>>71533167

What I'm getting from this is that you cared neither for their drearier stuff nor their more expansive stuff. That's kind of the two extremes that the band excel at so I don't know what else to recommend. Maybe Pornography like the other anon said but if you didn't like Faith then I wouldn't hold your breath. If you liked Head on the Door you might find some material from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Wish that you'll like but you'll have the same problem with Disintegration as they all have similar run times. I dunno, maybe pick up their greatest hits collection?
>>
>>71533184
sorry i did hear that one as well, once. some good basslines but i expected to blown away because of the reviews. more consistently good then disintregration but doesnt have those huge hits.

guess there albums aint for me :( better to just make a playlist of hits.
>>
>>71533252
>>71533184
Wrong wrong wrong.

Listen to Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Wish.

Then call it quits.
>>
>>71533252

That's fair, The Cure has a ton of merit as a singles group. Their albums are generally perceived to be more scattershot in quality than the singles.
>>
What does /mu/ think of Mac Demarco? I immediately loved the album "2". Salad Days and Another One took quite a few listens to get into.
>>
>>71533277
This is a Cure thread.
>>
>>71533277
That's not goth enough for this thread. Blocked.
>>
High is such an awful song lol
>>
>>71533266
ill try those next. i read kiss me is overly long with lots of weak tracks scattered. hope that aint true!

i also havent heard the first album which ih eard is their most pop.
>>
>>71533317
The point is, there is going to be music on both of those albums that you will like. And isn't that the whole point?
>>
>>71533252
Get sanding on a beach and galore. Two pretty great comps with no overlapping songs. If you get those you can skip greatest hits, which is really mediocre in comparison and missing a lot of classic stuff like pictures of you while not really including anything not on those two comps.
>>
Listening to Show right now for the first time

It's fucking amazing
>>
>>71533334
definitely. i just hope theres an album i can say i really like. head on the door is the closest so far.
>>
>>71533355
Isn't it? I fucking love Show, it's not that varied setlist wise but it's killer.
If you like that I recommend Paris, it's from the same tour (wish tour) but focuses moreso on their early work and obscure stuff, and the song selection is totally different.
>>
>>71533317

I gave KMKMKM another listen recently and it's stronger on average than I remember it being. Some silly, throwaway tracks for sure but then there's good ass jams like The Kiss, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, Icing Sugar and The Snakepit. Honestly though, the album as a whole is kind of a stylistic sampler for the band, even their darker side crops up on songs like Torture and Shiver and Shake or their pop sensibilities with Just Like Heaven and One More Time. I can almost guarantee it'll be hit or miss if you've not felt the band's discography so far but it should also have some surefire hits. Wish? It'll be like Disintegration but a smidge less dreary and a bit poppier on average. Same kind of longform songwriting though, maybe a little less intensive on that. Nothing quite as monolithic as The Same Deep Water As You but do expect something like Plainsong or Prayers For Rain.
>>
>>71533420
Yeah I'm going to check that out too, I was just looking at the set list. Very bizarre for a 1993 Cure show. I can imagine the disappointment for the people who showed up to hear the hits, cause it looks like they didn't play too many of them.
>>
>>71533312
Yeah it kinda sucks especially when it's squished in between some of the best songs on the album (Open, Apart, edge of the deep green sea)
>>
>>71533462
They sound pretty happy on the album actually. The crowd even sings along to the keyboard line on play for today and great some of the obscure stuff enthusiastically. I think they played some of their hits too but just didn't release them on that album because they put out Show a month or so before they released Paris.
>>
>>71532641
I'm jumping in.

I liked 4:13 dream pretty well. Especially the first half. Underneath the starts is one of their best.

I really like Wish and Kiss me
but I also really like Bloodflowers and disintegration.

For me Faith Pornography and 17 seconds are very dark and I'm not depressed enough to want to listen to them because they are very nihilistic. That said, I do think they are really good.

I don't like Three imaginary boys or The Cure self titled much at all. The Cure because of the horrid production. 3 imaginary boys because its boring.

>>71533167
The cure are almost like 2 bands. The dark nihilistic one and the poppy fun one.

Try Wish and Kiss me and see what you think of those. if you don't like them you wont like the band.

>>71533312
That's funny because Robert thinks High and MInt Car are both better than Friday.
>>
>>71533397
Try the Japanese Whispers compilation i think it might be what your looking for.
>>
>>71534383
thanks someone rec me that before. wonder if it was you?
