Can anyone explain to me how people feel when they listen to music and don't have knowledge of music theory and can't play instruments? I believe it's like reading a book with words you can't understand, it must be very sad for them.

Youre describing like 80% of /mu/ right now.
>>
a better analogy would be likening it to listening to someone talk while being illiterate
>>
>>71519382
You can enjoy someone telling a story without knowing how to read.

People that don't know music theory are even more impressed by widely used composition or technical tricks.

My family and their friends were amateur musicians. A toddler can feel the beat. Walking bass lines impressed me more than drums, piano, banjo. Grandfather's violin was amazing, mother's piano not so much.
A few years later, they bought a Tandy 1000, which came with pic related. Imagine my frustration, when every single note I punched in sounded terrible with the others. That feel when can't reverse engineer music theory. Sad, indeed.

>You can enjoy someone telling a story without knowing how to read.

It's more complex that that. If you don't know music theory or can't play an instrument you don't even know the language that the person who tells the story uses. You are just hearing things you don't understand.

while i do know some music theory and how to play some instruments, that's a very stupid argument - can't you enjoy paintings without knowing how to paint? it's really not the same as reading books - some parts of it may be, the less emotional parts, but our body enjoys rhythms, melodies, textures and not knowing music theory won't change this at all, you're nothing better from someone who knows not one musical note.
>>
>>71520180
If you believe that a person can like art only because it releases dopamine to his brain that's okay. But if you can't even learn what a thing you enjoy means and how it's made you are missing a lot of fun, and I wish more people would learn about music instead of just listening to it.

>>
>>71520497
>if you can't even learn what a thing you enjoy means
Music is not a language
>>
>>71519382
>I believe it's like reading a book with words you can't understand
It's more like reading a book, but you don't know proper grammar; you can still read it fine, but you won't understand the greater design of it's composition.
>>
Why are people who know music theory so obsessed with people who don't?
>>
>>71520497
Pretty sure anything you like releases dopamine. It is the pleasure chemical in our brains. How do you get pleasure from art without it releasing dopamine? I like going to museums and critically analyzing art pieces, I'm pretty sure that releases dopamine. Do I enjoy it on some super deep pretentious level that normies couldn't comprehend that gives me a superiority complex? Sure. But even then it releases dopamine.

It's ok if you have a small dick, you don't need to compromise, Napoleon. We still love you.

>>
>>71520608
can you elaborate?
>>
>>71520976
As a 16 year old with no clue what a treble clef was, I enjoyed music with all my heart and soul. Constantly had albums playing.

After learning music theory, What's Going On by Marvin sounded neither more nor less beautiful. Sure I can appreciate music from a technical standpoint, but I don't think that's how music SHOULD be necessarily enjoyed. Or at least not for me. It sucks the art out of it. Music for me is something that evokes my emotions. Stuff that brings me back to times in my life, stuff that helps me in the present with whatever I'm dealing with. It isn't a composition.

Maybe ignorance is bliss for music, because learning music theory only turned me into a grumpy critic, trying to over analyze everything.

But fuck OP and every pretentious snob trying to forcefully shove the cock that is music theory down everyones' throats.

>>
>>71519382
this is bait but I'm going to bite because
>I believe it's like reading a book with words you can't understand
is a really stupid analogy

it's more like reading a book having never formally learned more than basic english, but being able to pick up meanings of words through context and comparison with all the other books you've read in your spare time

honestly you're probably a moron if you sincerely think formal education is the only way one can learn something. it is required for mastering something, yes, but not for basic comprehension

it's also possible (and I imagine quite common) to understand basic elements of music theory subconsciously without having been taught the vocabulary to put into words what is being heard
>>
>>71519382
t. just started playing guitar
>>
>>71519382
Terrible analogy.

Most people that read books have no idea how to write one.

You don't need intimate knowledge about how a thing is made in order to enjoy it.

>>71519382

He's a producer/engineer
>>
>>71523543
composing bangin melodies & rhythms has nothing to do with that
>>
>>71519382
The thing is words are a real thing whereas music theory doesn't exist.
>>
>>71519382
Are you literally fucking retarded? Obviously there was a point in your life when you didn't know shit about music theory or play an instrument and I'm sure there was some kind of music you heard that gave you goose bumps or entranced you.

Also take your pic for example. There was sure as hell a point in Brian Wilson's life where he didn't understand music theory or play an instrument and clearly he was quite touched by music at that time before he became a musician.
>>
The elitism coming off of this post is laughably stupid. Unless those said people are listening to avant-garde jazz/noise, then knowing that stuff is useless. It's anecdotal, but being a musician who used to know music theory (I hardly used it after learning it in high school and subsequently forgot it all) it never affected my listening experience. I only used it when playing music.
>>
>>71523411
>Most people that read books have no idea how to write one.

that's just wrong anon
maybe they can't write a good book(but most musicians can't write a good song too) but almost all of them can write a book
>>
>>71523673
>being a musician who used to know music theory

this is gold
>>
>>71523677
Most of them probably think they can, but they can't.
>>
>>71519382
the fact you think the basic level of cognitive ability needed to get something out of simple music actually needs to be learned reflects badly only on you. as does your belief that people need to have the knowledge and vocabulary to put into words their experience in order for that experience to have taken place
>>
>>71523582

music is so simple that people study for years and play instruments for years to get good; you are a moron

>as does your belief that people need to have the knowledge and vocabulary to put into words their experience in order for that experience to have taken place

what the fuck
>>
>>71524128
>music is so simple that people study for years and play instruments for years to get good
there is such a thing as simple music, that does not mean I think music as a whole is simple. this shouldn't be difficult for you to understand. most people who don't haven't been taught any music theory and don't play an instrument listen to simple music

>what the fuck
is this a placeholder for an argument of some kind?
>>
>ITT:assblasted "music listeners"
>>

>there is such a thing as simple music, that does not mean I think music as a whole is simple. this shouldn't be difficult for you to understand. most people who don't haven't been taught any music theory and don't play an instrument listen to simple music
where I said that people should only learn simple music? people should learn music

>is this a placeholder for an argument of some kind?
yes, where I said that people need to have the knowledge and vocabulary to put into words their experience in order for that experience to have taken place?
>>
>>71524448
>where I said that people should only learn simple music?
you didn't, nor did I say or imply that you did

>yes, where I said that people need to have the knowledge and vocabulary to put into words their experience in order for that experience to have taken place?
I don't know what you're trying to say here. it's almost like you're trying to type in english without having much knowledge of the language
>>
>>71520633
because they aren't more talented or sophisticated than your average person who doesn't know theory, and they know it deep down, and it haunts them, so they use their theory knowledge to try to make themselves feel superior to others to hide from their deep-seated inadequacy

From what I've seen of people who think music theory is important, they don't even listen to music. They just analyze it. It's just an intellectual thing. They'll gush about some nondescript music because it has a leitmotif in it.
>>

>From what I've seen of people who think music theory is important, they don't even listen to music

another gold
>>
>>71523820
Sounds contradictory I know, but I never used it, being varsity men's and mixed choir in a 5A high school, when I gig with friends or at my church. Unless I start getting into improv jazz, it's useless for me, therefor after awhile I simply forgot it.
>>

because it's tride-and-true and intuitive. While an artist may not "know" theory, their songwriting practices adhere to the theory. People who fuck with this formula because "dude fuck the rules we are artists XDD" make shit music.

It's only when you know the rules that you can break them (without it sounding like shit)
