Does anyone actually play in Open E tuning?

If so, can I ask why you are such a faggot?

Anyone who plays in open E just reveals a core lack of understanding of music.

To be willing to tune your strings UP higher than their intended pitch and risk damaging or snapping them ALL FOR THE PURPOSE OF KEY makes you a retard. You could easily tune the other strings down relative to the high strings, and have the same tuning intervals but simply in a lower key. Even then, all you would have to do to play in your intended open E key is just play higher up the neck.

If you play in open E, you LITERALLY damage your instrument for the sole purpose of having the E key in a certain SPECIFIC POSITION on the fretboard. This means you're worthless as a person and everyone who loves you is wrong.

>>71515180
They're prettier Jazzmasters without the full scale neck, the ability to play a diverse range of music, and the testicles.

Biggest purchase regret of my life.
>>
>>71515180
>What the fuck is wrong with Jaguars?

They're popular, especially among /mu/tants since it's associated with a lot of Indie/Alternative/Shoegaze bands and is on the cover of Loveless. Therefore it's become known as a meme.

They're actually pretty great instruments though I've heard they are prone to falling apart. I've never owned one though so I can't say for sure. I've played them quite a few times though.
>>
>>71515211
What limits Jaguars as far as diversity in your opinion? I was thinking of buying one over a Jazzmaster for the opposite reason.
>>
>>71515216
>I've never owned one though so I can't say for sure.
I've had to have the floating tremolo fixed three times, so yeah that is accurate.

>>71515230
The pickups. They're twangy and bright. And that's about all they are. Good luck getting any sort of sustain without using a Big Muff or a Freeze something.
>>
>>71515251
Also my Jaguar cost about $1100 give or take.

>>71515293

>>
>>71515287
And oh yeah, the feedback that Jaguar produces is absolute fucking garbage. All I get is the highest fucking ear piercing squeal you can imagine. You can't even manipulate it or play with it in anyway.

>>71515308
Never played one or heard one played outside of Cobain. Can't say anything about them.
>>
>>71515308
>What about an HH Jaguar?
Not him, but obviously that would negate the pickup issue. But then again, why would you want a Jaguar that doesn't sound like a Jaguar? I would say go to a local store and see if you can play these instruments and see for yourself. Don't just buy a Jaguar over a Jazzmaster because it looks pretty though.
>>
>>71515293
/gg/ will meme on you no matter what you buy
>>
>>71515293
it was a meme for me considering I literally already own a MIM strat, people are generally divided but honestly there are some legitimate complaints, the stock neck pickup on the MIM HS configuration is really unsatisfactory IMO. Also its a smaller scale, just feels weird. From a purely economic standpoint there is better value to be had, but I suppose some people love it.
>>
I got drunk and recorded this pls r8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcjsZi6cBD0
>>
>>71515330
Well I wasn't buying it simply for the looks, as I noted earlier I assumed the Jag would be more versatile due to all the knobs and switches. Seems hard to believe the Jazzmaster would be more versatile.

And I do intend to play one in person before deciding. Though I have watched some videos on youtube and the Jaguar seems pretty versatile from what I've seen. Especially the HH since it has a coil tap so I can get a good humbucker and single coil tone.
>>
>>71515357
>I assumed the Jag would be more versatile due to all the knobs and switches
Ugh.

You see the three knobs and the switch at the top of the Jaguar?

Yeah. They're fucking useless. The switch controls whether you are playing the guitar in the rhythm circuit or the lead circuit.

I am telling you right now you will never, ever use the rhythm circuit.

The three switches at the bottom select which pickups you are using. Literally every electric guitar has these switches.
>>
>>71515342
you're ready for the stage
>>
>>71515381
To emphasize, there is a reason why a lot of Jaguar players put tape over the rhythm/lead circuit selector switch. It's because if they accidentally hit the switch and push it down, they'll put the guitar into the rhythm circuit, rendering it pretty much useless.

its why i never post pics of my gear or clips of my playing. even if i was literally slash people here would still tell me to fuck off with my blues shit.
>>
>>71515083
>>71514939

>Three familiar examples of Open E tuning are the distinctive song "Bo Diddley" by Bo Diddley, the beginning guitar part on the song "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and the rhythm guitar on "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones, as well as their distinctly earthy blues song "Prodigal Son" from the Beggars Banquet album, originally by Robert Wilkins. This tuning is also used in Guns N' Roses' "It's So Easy," The Black Crowes' "She Talks to Angels", Glen Hansard's "Say It To Me Now", Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way", Dave Mason's "We Just Disagree", The Faces' "Stay With Me", Billy F. Gibbons in "Just Got Paid", in The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter", lead guitarist Keith Richards uses Open E tuning. Open E tuning also lends itself to easy barre-chording as heard in some of these songs. Chris Martin of Coldplay also uses this tuning live in the song Hurts Like Heaven, but puts a capo on sixth fret.
>>
why bass uses a lot of direct out(with preamps) put into PA for live/ interface for recording, but guitars prefer micing the speaker?
>>
>>71515381
Idk what you're talking about, I use the switches in every configuration on mine for different sounds. It's the most versatile guitar I've ever had. I fucking love Jags.
>>
>>71515398
So what you're really saying is that /gg/ will meme on you if you post dadrock/bluesy guitar shit or post pics of overrated guitars like Les Pauls.

>>
>>71515405
In this case Open E tuning is the fucking shit. I would just suggest using a guitar you don't give a fuck about unless you're super rich and can afford it.
>>

>>71515381

>>
>>71515433
Nope. I'm saying if he had good taste in music or guitars he wouldn't get memed on. He was saying he would get memed on no matter what.

How do I improve a MIM standard Stratocaster, nerds?

I was thinking about servicing it and getting new pickups but idk
>>
>>71515442

Not as much as the lower three switches, but yes. Dial in tone knob (thing?), and big muff for a bassy doom tone, and I like the tone up the neck if I want a more rounded sound on higher notes.

I'm not saying I keep that fucker in place or use it every time I pick up the guitar, but there's certainly use for it and it's added to my personal value of the guitar.

To re-cap:

-The floating tremolo on my Jaguar has broken three (3) times.
-The stock bridge was unbearable to play on and I replaced it as soon as possible.
-The rhythm circuit switch is a useless waste of space and only there as an excuse to add more chrome and to differentiate it from the Jazzmaster
-Pickups suck

Do what you want with this information HH guy. I'm telling you to buy a hollow body instead.

gonna do an open mic at this chill college bar near my place
i want to play live and with other ppl but idk anyone around here who plays

i think i can cut some parts out. should i replace one song with a cover?

Don't know how well that would go over at a college bar, but im going to take a leap of faith and guess you're not autistically walking into this bar with no understanding of how open mic's at this venue typically go. that being said, I would cut either the last or 1st song, or on the last song either don't sing or give more effort in the vocals because the half whispering half singing honestly detracts, sorry I'm not trying to hurt your feelings but I listened to it so I'm not going to lie to you. good luck though definitely some enjoyable stretches there.

Whyyyyyyy
>>
>>71514920
>damage your instrument
Maybe if you play a shitty Indonesian Ibanez with a paper-thin neck. Never heard of a guitar broken with switching tunings. Can fall out of adjustment and you might get a permanently bent neck if it's extremely maladjusted and you keep it that way for months or years. If you want to be pro about it, you tighten the truss rod after increasing string tension, maybe switch to a custom string set instead, also adjust your intonation and keep that guitar in that tuning if you plan on using it.
>>
>>71515429
Stop putting shit in people's heads. Tuning two strings a whole step up and one half step up is not a dramatic tension increase, probably a quarter of a turn of the truss rod and the guitar works fine. Most real guitars - again, not a $200 Ibanez Standard with paper thin neck and soft basswood body - can handle putting jazz-gauged strings (12-54, 13-56 etc.) and tuning them to E standard 440 without any problems. On a basswood Ibanez or an agathis shitty cheapo Cort etc. higher tension can even strip the wood and pull the bridge out of the guitar, get even a freakin' Epiphone Std or a Squier Classic Vibe and you're fine.
>>
>>71515514
A good set up is always recommended, strats are pretty simple to set up yourself if you have a bit of patience, don't be afraid to tweak the action etc. until you get it perfect for you.

Personally I'd also upgrade the electronics, I like changing the tone pot from the middle to the bridge pickup.

Do you use the trem? I set mine flat to the body and set it so it won't budge even with muh bigass blues double bends. If you do like to float the trem then it can be worthwhile changing the bridge.
>>
>>71515546
How does that hagstrom play bro? Would you recommend it for someone looking for a good hollowbody that doesn't really want to spend an arm and a leg on one?
>>
>>71516865
cont. my rant on open E -- when you uptune to upen E and the tension gives you more neck relief, that usually makes the action higher and the guitar plays better with slide. As that's what most people use the tuning for, it's even a benefit rather than a disadvantage and it's a pretty useful tuning to retune to on the spot.

Sup. I don't work so I'm not exactly rich so new guitars don't come around very often, so I have to research the crap out of everything before I buy. It's 6 years in and it's time to buy my 2nd.

I cannot go to guitar center or whatevs, and I wouldn't anyway. I don't like going out and picking up guitars just off a wall is just I dont know, Ijust want to order something an dhave it arrive and not worry about it all. I get stressed out

I got like $500. What do?
>>

If it were me, I'd get something with a smaller body for fingerpicking - Yamaha FS series if your sticking with them

>>

No, this stresses me out. I like to order, have it arrive, and it's a good instrument as a result of researching.

Once I've ordered something, that's it, it's mine then.

Also, like I said I can't go to a guitar center or whatever, it's not possible.

Buy from somewhere with a good return policy.

Personally though, I'd never buy an instrument without playing it first

I don't mind who I go for really, Yamaha FG just seemed nice because I wanted a folk guitar. Everything apart from what is today called heavy metal. From country to blues and jazz and rock and metal of the old days.

What kind of guitar do you have right now?
A 70s vintage Squier HSS.

>Is there anything in particular that you like or dislike about it?
I don't use or particularly like the tremolo system and if I had known about some problems when i first bought the guitar I would have got a telecaster or something.

It's all good bro. Sounds like a guitar with humbuckers that coil split would be a good option, either that or with a HSS type layout.

A tuneomatic type bridge sounds like the right choice for you also, easy to setup and solid tuning stability.

Do you have any preference as far as body shape/size goes? What about neck thickness and fret size?
>>
Is Yamaha Pacifica 112J good beginner guitar? If not, what do you suggest?

I find my HSS Strat is the best out of all the guitars I own for versatility, it covers all the bases really well.

I would get the best one you can find in budget. The tremolo is blocked in mine so don't be put off by that.

That's a good call on the HSS strat, I'd be tempted to go for a G&L Tribute Legacy HSS as they are better than what Fender offers for similar money. It does have a tremolo but it is a much better system that what is in a Squier or MexiFender. I'm a big G&L fan, great guitars and for the money the Tribute series go for, very hard to beat. I would look at the Legacy, Ascari and Asat models, even a Fioriano if you can find one.

Here is a potentially really stupid question - has anyone ever experimented with changing the material of a Strat pickguard, and what effect does it have on the tone?

The logic is that Teles have a distinctive twang because of the metal plate the bridge pickup is mounted to. Tried sticking a Tele pickup in the bridge of a Strat once and it didn't twang at all and sounded nothing like one. So surely, with the Strat pickups mounted to the pickguard, there is surely some sort of reasoning there for a tonal change? Anyone tried a metal one for example?
>>
>>71521124
You are a serious cork-sniffer if you think a pickguard change affects tone in any noticeable form.
>>
>>71521151
I know the tonewood thing is a meme, but like I said the metal bridge mounting on a tele gives a distinctive tone, does it work the same way on a strat?

I'm not talking molecularly different polymers, I mean plastic / wood / metal etc
>>
>>71521175
That's not what gives the Tele its distinctive tone.

Kiddo, i once though jaguar were total shit but i got one and i kinda dig the scale and tonal options. The thing is, if you roll the volume up all the way up it does sounds like shit with a metallic shitty unusable for clean settings 'cling'. It is ok for aggressive overdrive/distorted tones. The secret is to roll off the volume a tiny bit (8.5-9 volume) and thats it, you get a teley bridge, bridge-neck sound and a straty neck sound. Then the other circuit is pretty good for jazzy stuff. Also, use strings at least gauge 11 for avoiding shit. Been said all that, strats, jazzmasters and teles are still superior.

toothbrush and rubbing alcohol

don't pay $$$ for lemon oil, that shit does nothing

get a bottle of linseed oil and it'll last forever, couple of drops, wipe on, rub in, wipe off. don't drown it in oil either, you only need a couple of drops to spread over the surface.,

let's post legendary instruments
>1965 Gibson SG 'Monkey', heavily customized by British guitar builder John Birch. The first five Black Sabbath albums were recorded with this guitar. “Paranoid”, “War Pigs”, “Iron Man”, “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”, “Symptom of the Universe” – this guitar did it all.

Didn't Iommi use a Strat for the first half of the first record until one of the pickups fucked up then switched to the SG? Either way, that SG is a piece of history

Pic related is Nancy, the 1953 Telecaster that Roy Buchanan used almost exclusively

Does anyone know anything about Stellar guitars?

There is one at a local salvation army for $250 (and the lady behind the counter implied that it might drop in price soon), but I can't really find out much about the company. I read somewhere that they were lawsuit era LP style guitars made in Japan, but other sites I looked claim that they were available until very recently & made in Korea.

Pic related is what it looks like. It is kinda ugly I know, but it is still better looking than my current electric guitar, which is a first act that I have had since I was 10.

Fuck me is it really?

I have nothing against commercial music that lots of people like, but surely such an iconic instrument could go to someone good.
>>
>>71523052
Watched a couple of his other covers in the suggested videos, he's an amazing guitarist as good as anyone. The hatred is absurd particularly from a userbase of fucking guitar players.

Then you're actually playing in Phrygian Dominant ya dingus
>>
>>71523090
If a guitar doesn't look right to you, nothing will work. You wont be inspired to play a guitar that makes you look bad, thus looks are most important.
>>
>>71522336
No idea. But then this is the same board that worships Death Grips and Grimes.

He is a bit of a cunt and some of his songs are very pop orientated but a lot of it is seriously good blues music and he is undeniably an excellent guitar player. Just watch the "where the light is" concert

Ok got it, I agree with that, because sound is dependant on look and feel, it is the least important.

Ace Frehley's 1973 Tobacco Burst Les Paul Deluxe. This guitar did the first four KISS albums entirely, and appeared on the next five albums with Ace as well as 1996's Psycho Circus.

It cost him over a million so at least he was keen to have it. There aren't that many great guitarists with that kind of pocket money I guess.

Should tapping sound as loud and clear as playing picked if you're doing it right? Or is it pretty normal to apply compression specifically to tapping parts to make up for the change in volume?

I'm talking about tapping mostly clean or with very minimal overdrive (in the style of Minus The Bear / TTNG / insert math-rock band here)
>>
>>71523288

Ok I believe these guys are better technically, and to be fair I haven't heard of any of them. So it is my understanding that these guys mostly just give lessons and they are considered the best because of their ability and that's why people want to be instructed from the best.
>>
>>71523484
Don't try to distinguish between major and minor. The notes are the same. Just work on listening and feeling. it'll make you a better player.

I disagreed but did not want to argue, I think he meant more like forming a bond with the instrument beyond the face value aesthetic, like "look right" like I can see myself playing this forever blah blah. definitely don't mean it like "this will help me look sick"
