It's such a beautiful day.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

It's certainly forward thinking and strange, but Cottonwoodhillis two great weird psych tracks followed by twenty minutes of one guitar and piano riff with some found sounds randomly coming in. And the singer has some annoying orgasmic moaning vocals about sex and occultism.

this album is great. "do while" is peak long car ride music. i feel like a lot of modern electronic artists try to achieve a glitchy sound like this but it's not executed nearly as well. "shop in store" is particularly noteworthy, what a fuckin cool track.

Depends on who you ask
For me it's an amazing concept attempting to blend electronic music, classical and black metal all into one big transcendental masterpiece. It rarely clicks in perfectly but when it does boy it's amazing. It's badly mixed and theres some seriously obvious fuckups that can be spotted even if you dont know anything about mixing, and in general it's such a crazy idea that it's hard to always get it to work, which leaves you with weaker tracks.

>St Elsewhere
It's obvious that Gnarls Barkley is good at singing, and Danger Mouse is good at producing. It's just that the end result sounds a bit in-authentic. I guess that you have to try extra hard to sound genuine when you attempt to replicate a genre of music as "raw" as soul and gospel.

>Noctourniquet
Mars Volta and co. drop their technical prowess and instrumental quirks for a more straightforward sound, as they focus more on building atmosphere. Not gonna lie their charm is lost here. Part of the fun of their previous works were reveling in how they were able to create familiar sounding and catchy melodies out of some ridiculously complex songwriting (with extravagant time signatures).

>Another Reason To Fast
eh

>some title in (spanish?) it's a Satan album
It's pretty good. I liked how the instrumentals sound as if they were lifted from a slowcore/post-rock track, then revved up to a million. Reminds me of Deathspell Omega. Could use more variety.

>Parson Sound
I came in expecting Swedish LRD. What I got instead was some okay psych rock with excellent pacing and atmosphere. Not every idea here is a keeper (especially when a particular motif -literally- drones on for nearly half an hour), but as a whole this album is solid.

>I Hate Jazz
I don't know how this is so good. Really, I don't. This should be another bandcamp garage band to throw into the "boring shit" pile, except that it's not. This shit goes pretty hard.

Oh and this was used surprisingly well in Steven Universe. Allow me to save face:

1). I know it's shit. I only watch the show because it's fun and """"cute""""
2). I gave Andrei Rublev a great score, and it might even be in in my top 15

>Andrei Rublev
I really liked this film. Like, alot. I can't formulate any sort of intellectual thought in my brain at the moment (or possibly at all) so i'll stop here.

not that hype but I'm gonna watch it and I'm gonna rewatch the original series beforehand, I really didn't get too into Twin Peaks tho, it's okay but the soap opera/murder mystery felt a bit generic and there wasn't enough weirdness for it to be subversive or really interesting to me. >Ichiko Aoba - 0
I don't get it. Her voice and guitar playing is pleasant but it's a bit simple for how long the songs are. I'd understand if I knew what she was saying but what's the point in a simple folk record like this without interesting lyrics? Not meaning to shit on it because it is nice but yeah. 2.5/5

>Kjarkas - Canto a la mujer de mi pueblo
Vocals were okay but the instrumentals were cool. Nice style of folk. 3.5/5

>>71512424
nah i'm gonna rewatch all of it, will be with my brother who's seen no Twin Peaks. I think my opinion from my first watch is worse than it should be anyway, mainly because i was so disappointed, I'd heard it was weird and it was my first exposure to Lynch so I had really high expectations.
>>
>>71512461

His early short The Alphabet is pretty good too
>>
ታፈሰ ተስፋዬ - Zemana Getem Derasi (1996)
>ethiopian church music

As I was listening to this, it /really/ grew on me. It's absolutely repetitive, probably one of the more repetitive albums I've heard, and that didn't sit well with me, but around the end of the albums its hypnotic characteristics really took a hold of me. Like triangle mentioned, every single song here is in one key while making usage of the same chord, and it's impressive how much is drawn out from this incredibly limited pallette of sound. The instrument used is really interesting, and the vocals are incredibly homely and inviting. The main draw of this is just how enveloping, warm, and comfortable it is. The repetitive nature of it kind of lulls you and makes you really familiar with it's sound, and while it may get old, it's just so darned pleasant to really even care about that. Cool stuff, pleasantly surprised me.

3.0-

>>71511755
>Does the rest of /daily/ like Wes Anderson?
he's awesome, i love directors that have a very distinct style and he manages to combine that style with really great writing and characters. he could really easily go style over substance but he never does.
>>
>>71512457
I don't even mind some of the silly subplots, I just found a lot of it to be a real bore, and I didn't like Windom Earle at all.

>>71512461
Eraserhead is fantastic, you gotta check that one out too.

>>71512561
Oh yeah it's not even close to Lynch's best and weirdest, though I think his surreal stuff being reeled in by Frost has its merits too.

Also, to defend Ichiko Aoba a bit, I find that her melodies are solid enough to keep me engaged despite the song length, and you could always look up the lyrics. I wouldn't say not knowing what she's saying is a fair criticism.
Though I haven't listened to 0 yet, only 0%.

>Patty Waters - Sings (1966)
While the second half was a VERY interesting listen, the first half really did nothing for me. I appreciate its experimentation and influence, but outside of the strange vocalizations on "Black...", there was not much to keep my interest. Bonus points for originality.

>Nurse With Wound - Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella (1979)
The atmosphere at certain parts is impeccable, and track 2 was especially great. The weird moaning vocals were extremely annoying though; good thing they only lasted a couple minutes. However a lot of this is just unimpressive improv noodling, but it does have some astounding moments.

>Elliott Smith - XO (1998)
The first half rivals some of the best stuff from Either/Or, Smith's best record in my opinion. Waltz #2 is definitely in my top 5 tracks of his I've heard. However it really falls off around track 6 or 7 and unfortunately doesn't recover.

Preoccupations - Preoccupations (2016)
>post-punk

This has the same problem as their first album, everything just blends together in a really grey, really singular mush of sound. One thing that Women was really good at was hiding very obvious and delectable melodies under some more muddy washes of sound, while Preoccupations really only has the washes of sound. Sometimes it's done well, like on the wonderfully dark opener "Anxiety", but other tracks have no defining characteristics at all. It's one thing to focus on mood over songwriting, but these guys almost nearly completely eschew songwriting in favor of creating a dark atmosphere. They definitely achieve that goal, but in doing so they sacrifice /so/ much.

2.0+

>>71513080
yeah, the second half of XO is definitely markedly worse than the first. "Amity" is probably the only track of his i downright /hate/. but the first half has "Waltz #2" and "Tomorrow Tomorrow" so y'know can't fault it too much, even if it's probably my least favorite of his.

FlyingIceWizard recs:

Ornette Coleman - Science Fiction (1972)
>free jazz, avant-garde jazz

Very big indicator of the more fusion-based style Coleman would take on after this album's release. While it's interesting to hear experiments with electric violins and vocals, the fusion tracks are generally my least favorite tracks here. They seem kinda clumsy, like they're trying too hard to balance Coleman's very free style of playing and composition with more streamlined, structured, nearly "poppy" elements, and it doesn't always work. The vocals are great on their own, but the structure of the tracks they appear on are generally unappealing. The straight-up free tracks are definitely great though. Coleman's playing is as stream-of-consciousness as ever, the drumming is frenetic, and the bass work by Charlie Haden is /exceptional/, probably my favorite part of the album. It does a rising and falling thing on a few tracks and it's one of the coolest bass effects I've ever heard, and the pace of it indicates a very obvious influence from rock bass playing, which gives a little bit of a fusion vibe without ever fully crossing over into that territory. There are definitely some things I don't like about this album, but as a whole it's another very good album from Coleman.

>neoclassical darkwave

Totally scratches that 2007-era RuneScape music itch I've had since elementary school, not gonna lie. Some cool synth moves here and there, and the atmospheres nice and all, but most of this is Cheesy with a capital 'c'. It's just so damn overblown. The melodies are very """epic""", the choral vocals are hilarious, and the regular vocals are very much in that emotional whisper style that tries to convey emotion but fails at it. It's a decent album, and certainly not a bad one, but for how much it's touted as a masterpiece despite being an okay synth excursion that evokes the album cover less than it evokes '90s RPGs, very disappointing.

I'll probably listen to the new zeitkratzer album today. Maybe something else.

Every week, a /daily/ member is chosen to read aloud a chapter or two in a livestream where everyone joins in to listen. Rinse and repeat until we finish the book.

>>71517962
whenever swans does live shows, they test out demos for songs they have and i guess based around the crowd reactions and whatever happens between the performers the new songs come out. this isn't an uncommon practice, bands do it all the time so that they can get instant feedback from the audience.

If we're seriously gonna do this I have two suggestions:

1) An audio only stream
2) Perhaps someone should record themself doing a reading then post the recording?

Just because streaming video is unreliable and shitty sometimes, especially since we have someone from /daily/ on every continent (except for Africa and Antarctica I think).

>>71518584
>>71518625
That's fair. What book should we start with then?

I suggest Brave New World for no reason other than I've been meaning to re-read it.

If I were to use an audiobook I would have the actual book along as a guide. I used it for a bit with IJ and it worked fine and I retained pretty much everything.

That would mean that people would have to listen to someone else's daily boy's voice in order to read it in it's entirety. I love you guys, but that's a horrible way to read a novel.

I'd much prefer a standard book club format. A set number of pages per week (for all participants to read at their own leisure) w/discussion and reviews every Sunday or something.

Tina Brooks - True Blue (1960)
>Hard Bop

Damn fine hard bop set with a strong blues flavour. Very groove-centric melody lines and saxophone heavy execution. Despite it's very bluesy feel, it remains upbeat with a consistently quick rhythm, even for slower ballad type tracks such as 'Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You'.
Despite following a fairly straight-forward hard bop formula, each track is compositionally focused on the interaction between instruments, lending a different and never stagnant atmosphere to each track.
The piano is perhaps the weak link, never quite reaching the invigorating highs of the two horn players, but still mending with the style well. The set contains a refreshing mix of hard bop, upbeat swing and latin infused styles, particularly the drumming and bass lines.
Fantastic set, and not one to skip over.

I'm back....(hold up)....

on my SHIT !!!!

>No Trend - Too Many Humans......
*thumbs up emoji* The only element I really disliked are a lot of the pseudo-intellectual fake deep lyrics that are ever present in hardcore punk. Someone's not a "slave" for working at McDonalds so they can afford to live calm down dude. Not everyone can afford to have their parents buy them instruments so that they can make a band yelling at normies. Everything else is perfect.
9

>Various Artists - Longing for the Past
Rating #4000!!! Go me!!! (kill me) My only complaint about a lot of these Dust-to-Digital compilation is that a lot of these incredible songs are really set back by their inevitable occasionally shotty recording quality. It's a real bummer that we'll probably never hear many of these incredible pieces in their original quality, but what's left to admire is something really beautiful. Much easier to rec, seeing as there's so many people here who enjoy SouthEast-Asian music this much. Favorite discs were the middle two from Thailand and Burma, which were damn incredible.
8

>Fra Lippo Lippi - In Silence
Yeahyeahyeah. Good times. "Recession" is one of coldwave's bests. Tags are "depressive" and "lethargic" but I really felt like there were a lot of fun songwriting elements here to me. Can't help but crack a grin when listening to stuff like this.
8

>Ekkehard Ehlers - Plays
The "John Cassavetes" set is incredible jesus. Nothing quite reaches that level, and a bit of it is pretty bad, but a very worthwhile compilation. I can barely hear any of the original artists in the tracks I hear, but that makes it a bit more special imo.

>Opus Avantra - Opus Avantra
The vocals really carry this thing. If someone with a less interesting voice there's no chance I would've liked it as much, as the song-writing falls flat in a lot of areas. The sound-collage elements are cool, sure, but idk where to go with this review now. I shit on the songs but then I like it for some reason? Maybe I do have shit taste, huh?
7

>Gastr del Sol - Camoufleur
Enjoyed more than Upgrade & Afterlife! I think it really demonstrates a more cohesive, yet eclectic string of pieces. Didn't quite love it, but I can really see O'Rourke's optimistic happy-experimental style I adore so much shine through here. No reason not to hear this if you like the guy's other works.
7

>Mount Eerie - Live in Copenhagen
Phil has made some of the best folk music out there, but for me it's super on and off. Minus "Wind's Poem" every album he's released under "Mount Eerie" has been pretty inferior to his Microphones output. Here, it's just the dude and his guitar, making really simple, quiet, sweet music. I could see someone who's a bigger Mnt Eerie fan getting more out of this, as it's probably one of the comfiest albums ever, but I just wish there was more for me to grab onto here, as I kinda just felt bored through half of this.
6

>Tarentel - Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun
Thought pretty highly of "From Bone to Satellite" but this is super overblown. I know it's a comp of sorts, but there's a lot tying in here that I can't help but feel these tracks were meant to be in this format. Yet, everything inside is so disjointed and not really fulfilling as I've come to expect from this brand of post-rock. This is from the era where this genre really started to jump the shark.

>Big Star - 3rd
I've never really liked this style of really over orchestrated pop music. Something about shoving strings into the background of all these pop ballads just feels so unincorporating and ham-fisted to me. Idk why it annoys me so much, and I didn't really hear any super worthwhile songs on here like I could pick out from #1 Record. I can see the appeal, but it's definitely not for me.
4

>Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Can probably imagine I'll probably get the most shit for this pan if any. Though I enjoy elements of "Selling England by the Pound" I've never really been big on these guys, but here, their book of tricks really starts to run especially thin. What I think is created from this hour-and-a-half double album is needlessly overblown pop music. It reminds me a lot of The Who's "Tommy", which while also not great, does a lot of the things this album attempts in a much simpler, more satisfying fashion. This format of pop prog has never been engaging to me, nor will it probably ever be.
3

>Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill
Man this is BORING. I thought A I A was just satisfying, just a little empty, but this just feels lazy. I actually really liked the first two tracks, but everything else was terrible. This is only 45 minutes but it feels like a few hours I swear. Mixing indie folk with ambient just makes for really boring, empty, pop songs. I can usually see why stuff I dislike is liked by someone, but this really just confused me.
3

>Cromagnon - Orgasm
Some people will probably love it by virtue of "it was PRETTY WEIRD for 1969 huh???" Fine, but look at it for what it is. If this came out today you would hate it no questions asked. The audible equivalent of a dude farting in a bottle 50 years ago and someone opening it today and going "OMG AVANT-GARDE".

It's a good thing lyrics are overrated otherwise I'd probably hate punk. I grew up on the shit though, so how could I?

>>71522771
yeahyeah Holocaust is a cool track, and I remember Thirteen being one of my HS jams, but this style of super over-orchestrated pop rock has never been for me. I think ELO does that shit better (though the artists are only vaguely similar anyways) and I don't even care for them that much either.

I'd normally be with you on the orchestration but it doesn't feel shoehorned in at all with Big Star, there's not even much of it, the band are still at the forefront most of the time with orchestration to add a bit of atmosphere and the songwriting is so strong. I mean the album ends on a three track streak of Holocaust, Kanga Roo and Thank You Friends. I can understand not liking it as much as #1 Record but rating it 4/10? i'll pray for you son

Sufjan is a better composer imo. His songs are headed by instrumentation with string sections more involved rather than being pushed in the back playing two or three notes over and over. I probably would've loved 3rd had I discovered it a few years prior honestly.

>Also there's nothing wrong with lyrics against rich people
I think you're missing my point, which was that plenty of the people that write all those edgy anti-capitalist lyrics often come from very affluent, white families, which are probably the only reasons they can afford instruments in the first place. Do you know how much a decent-sounding set of drums would've cost in the 70s or 80s?

Again, it almost never has an affect on the music for me, I just find the lyrics dumb in this context.

And nah I got your point, I don't think it's particularly relevant, for one you don't know their background and would it really matter if they did? I don't think so, you don't need to be dirt poor to see inequality (the fact that the poor can't afford to make music speaks for that) and most punk would be a bit shit if they weren't shouting at something, society isn't fair, so why not have a little rant at the man?

Definitely not defending No Trend though, their lyrics have zero wit, just 'edgy' punk in general.

Tabula Rasa and the Indonesian traditional music albums were okay, but they just didn't grab me to where I wanted to listen to em again. Now, that "De Natura Sonorum" album from the other day? Fuck yes. No real complaints there, except that Parmegiani's music is a little cheesy.

I guess if anyone gives a shit I could post the last... three or four years of me listening to music, I've kept records of every band and album I've listened to, as well as smaller text detailing what tracks I liked.

But to be real brief about it, I tend to like instrumental music the most. A melody or progression that feels like it's on a journey and you gotta keep up with it, with a good range of textures. Prog rock is okay with me, but symphonic prog is 99% fuck no at this point because I've been burned too many times with boring albums. Punk and folk rock don't really interest me, either, but sometimes if a punk album is really fun, I can get into it, like something by the Dead Kennedys. Any genre fusion is usually a big plus.

For rock, I like Djam Karet, Ozric Tentacles, Dixie Dregs, Mackenzie Theory, Don Caballero, Focus, Hiro Yanagida, Fushitsusha, Ludus, Magazine, Joy Division, National Health, Heldon, etc.

For real my jam rn:

ends too early when it's just the track just by itself though but you get the idea

I also really dig the last half of this a lot but the first song is cool too:

Roxy and Elsewhere is fantastic mang. I really love the way Zappa always blurs the line between studio/live albums so often.

>>71524333
awesomecool! I usually like a lot of jazz-rock/fusion albums so maybe I should check some of those out. I've really liked what I've heard from Pekka Pohjola and Herbie Hancock so far so looking forward to those sometime.

Have you heard any of Zappa's jazz-fusion stuff? I think you may dig the tracks I posted above.

Try Geza X's You Goddamn Kids

Jazz fusion punk kind of deal. He produced the Dead Kennedys first album as well as stuff for a bunch of other LA bands like the Germs

Well I can't really say classical, since I haven't listened to much of it, given how much there is. I do know that I like Maurice Ravel, at least.

>>71524464

I've heard Zappa's first... seven or eight albums. Liked some of it, but he just wasn't as compelling to me. Pekka Pohjola's first three albums are solid gold. Everything after that, unfortunately, takes a pretty steep dive. It's depressing. There is one track on his sixth album, Jokamies, "No Way Out", that's surprisingly good, though. Jukka Tolonen's first three or four albums are also pretty good. Herbie Hancock is pretty rock solid from the late 60s all the way to the early 80s. His only real stinker in there, to me, is that disco album.

Note taken, will listen to sometime today.

Passed over this album by mistake. Yahoo! What a turnaround from the previous hours. On the first track and I like it already.

terrible fucking cromagnon review
nice strawman argument with the bottle there.
There's a lot of worthless experimental stuff from the 60's yes, but just cause you can't find appreciation in it doesn't mean everyone who enjoys it is blinded by the date it was released.
I mean I could basically say the same about beefheart or zappa; nice "le zany epic humor XD" you probably only like it cause it was weirdo music back in the 60's!
Caledonia is a legit great song, even if you hate this album, at least acknowledge there is more too it that avant-points for pretentious teens. pull your head out of your ass, man.
>>
>>71525346
that response is waaay too emotionally guided, but reading over it now you're totally right. And, in a way, so was my review when listening to that album, because reading the acclaim for it made me petty as fuck for some reason, since I saw a lot of the praise as artificial, but it's a 3.16 and a 2.78 from friends so those people are obviously in the minority anyways. It is a terrible review honestly. I'd probably write a better one given the chance.

I still think it's a terrible album though. I think it's just really bad usage of experimental elements in a way that doesn't really enhance the songwriting. I still think it's praised to highly by era-context rather than the content of the album. Seems extremely inventive so I admire it for that, however, had this come out any era other than the 60s no one would think highly of it. And no, I don't think Caledonia is a good song at all. Weird, sure, I just don't find any enjoyment out of it.

Abdel Karim el Kably - Sudan: The Music and Songs of Abdel Karim el Kably
>Nubian Music
Very quaint and lovely performance + some minimal interview stuff. I particularly love how this recording really captures the feeling of a small, intimate, outdoor concert. All the incidental noise; birds calling, hand clapping, all make you feel that much closer to the music being played. The music itself is pretty and Abdel is quite skillful, however, because these are shorter folk songs, there isn't much time for flourish like there would be in a longer raga-style classical Oud piece. The whistling gets me though, it's so sweet.
Overall very pleasant, nothing exceptional.

One of the great things about daily is getting to taste the salt of a /dailien/ when somebody doesn't like an album they like

In your defence fish's review was pretty bad (just like the album!) but it did seem like bait bc some of daily does really like this album
