Stephin Merritt tried to use every instrument he owned, which is a lot. He said in interviews, not one song should have the same instruments (give or take one or two). I don't think it's that he didn't give a damn, I think he just tried to hard.

But I honestly love this album.

Man, they're performing on 21st and 22nd in Durham, but I'm broke as shit and can't drive atm. I haven't been to a live show since I was 16. Every time I get a chance, something goes wrong.

Here's an example. Grand Canyon is super lush and layered on 69LS, but here it's done in a more minimal fashion akin to i. It feels more like music you'd hear people play out on the street instead of concert music.
