When did you realize /mu/ was dead?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

chart babbies / new frogs need not reply if you've been here shorter than one year.

Post activity is like half of what it was this time two years ago and we're still discussing the exact same music we were five years ago.

Didn't occur to me that the board had been hijacked by underage posters until the Drunken Peasants thread a couple months ago.

RIP /mu/

autists will say otherwise, but p4k being sold to Condé Nast i.e. the same company that owns reddit was the end of an era for independent music on the Internet.

I'm not saying they ever produced anything of value, but post quality jumped off a cliff after the acquisition. It's fucking unreal now.

It feels like something big changed in 2014. That was the last time the entire board got flooded when one big event happened, like DG breaking up.

There's lots of reasons, but mainly it's because lots of /mu/culture died that year. Listen-alongs got much less popular, trips went away, etc.. /mu/ doesn't feel as "whole" as it used to.

Bizarre. Almost like this board has no interest in music.

how new?

The idea behind public forum chan culture is to work as a collision / launchpad for various niche subcultures. What the fuck is the point in coming here if the music being discussed is the exact same as on a sight like reddit without even having a voting system in which the most bell curve content rises to the top?
>>
>>71477487
There must be a musician out there who will bring on a new DIY-renaissance of raw talent. And I mean authentic DIY that isn't overproduced and doesn't feel like it's trying to make trendy music to put on during social gatherings and media approval like how it is right now.
>>
>>71477936
I keep hoping, and every year it keeps not happening.

It's the Linux desktop or 1% libertarian popular vote at this point. It's just not gonna happen.
>>
>>71477893
Why would I talk to you about a band you like when I've never heard them and have no point of reference as to what they are?

If I made a thread called "Hey /mu/, what do you think of Iron Curtain? I think they were pretty ahead of their time", would you stop in and see what I was talking about? Likely, you wouldn't because it doesn't grab your attention.
>>
i hadn't been on here for like a year straight, i came back and saw that it was boring af and basically stagnant

Because you wouldn't present it that way, you fucking idiot.

You would bluetext 'Post Punk' and you would say you just discovered this cool band that only put out two EP's between '86 to '87 and everyone would listen and post their rare finds.

That's what a worthwhile thread looks like on a public forum, you mong.

Believe it or not, not every thread has to be JUST MARATHONED THE FIRST SONG, RED PILL MY WIFE' SON ON WHETHER HE LIKED IT OR NOT.

Old trips are lurking. I know because they tell me about stupid shit they find on here.

Maybe it's wrong of me to expect the music board to give a shit about music that isn't spoonfed to them by sorting algorithms? I dunno. This is my first time here in roughly a year and it just pisses me off how apparent it is that no one gives a shit anymore.

You're right, though. I probably won't be coming back this time.

This guy gets it.

Inclusiveness / turnover is so high on this board that everyone with any intention of moving beyond canonical albums and into deep cuts eventually grows out of this place.

The reward is having found qualities you look for in music with trained ears and the means by which to refine your taste on your own.

What this fails to explain is how the /mu/mor became so fucking awful. Other boards have only gotten better and more complex in this respect, but /mu/ just gets more infantile and unfunny as the kind years go on.

Hmm imo /mu/ is nothing like it was 6 years ago. I'd say sometime around 2010-2012 was its prime. /mu/core was a real thing and collective effort and there was endless discussion about all kinds of music all day. Vaporwave, shugazi, black metal, hip-hop, jazz, Japanese music, the list goes on.

I liked the emo days of 2011-2012, those were the days where I could just get a shit ton of music I haven’t ever heard of from one thread and it’ll all be good.

Back then no one gave a shit about what genre the other person listened to and labelled em a cuck or keked at all, the only people who got even bullied a little was the metal heads. >What this fails to explain is how the /mu/mor became so fucking awful. Other boards have only gotten better and more complex in this respect, but /mu/ just gets more infantile and unfunny as the kind years go on.
i suspect this has to do with the fact that /mu/ is inhabited mainly by insecure children who didn't get the memo that 'music taste' isn't a measurement of cool anymore, thanks to the >objective meme and 2010 internet culture razing all hierarchies in that respect. this is the only space they can still appear superior to others by virtue of what you listen to — notice how there's always a cringe thread up somewhere
>>
Maybe we can do something about it since a lot of us in this thread are old fags can't be just start updating the board with new happenings and input more into the share threads, I know I'm gonna get a sour reply to this but still I really loved /mu/ I would have grown to be a complete pleb if I didn't decide to leave /a/ forever and lurk /mu/.

You know goddamn well I'm checking those dubs.

But anyways, this. Turnover rate is what ended up killing /mu/. There's no provided incentive for people who have been posting for longer to stick around when everyone here is just discovering the /mu/core chart.

neo-/mu/ stakes serious capital in the music it consumes and it's no joking matter. Similarly toxic / hostile boards will have some good-natured comedy relief facet interspersed with the regular shit to make it fun for everyone, but that's completely gone from here.

>>71483399
I like Death Grips a great deal but I really associate them with the death of board culture. You look at things that started in /mu/ having millions of hits on youtube and stuff that we used to joke about becoming identity-defining for edgy /b/ teens, or whatever Facebook groups have replaced it. Vapourwave properly fucking nailed us. It was kind of fun to see new upstart producers try and make their own little albums and graphics and artwork, but when it broke out of here, the jokes got done to death. (I know we didn't start vapourwave ourselves but it wouldn't have broken out the same way if not for us)

Like I even kept hanging around /mu/ when the feels threads were like half of the content because it was still community rather than hijack. I showed up here as a pleb looking for a Muse album leak in 2009.

/mu/ was the board that really helped me shape up desu. It was way more chill than a lot of other boards I used to read, introduced me to some stuff I really enjoyed, and didn't have the edgy faux-fascist /pol/ leakage. Coming back here and seeing "nu-male" like ten times on page 1 was a bit of a joke.

I went on here to share the Father John Misty leak and I've been checking daily since and nobody's even talking about it. This used to be the fucking only place worth mentioning when it came to album leak discussion. Or being ahead of Pitchfork's curve or whoever.

Fuck it, is this Fantano's fault?

Nobody is trying to, dumbfuck. Did you read the bluetext? This is a meta thread discussing when you realized this board was dead. Either like the thread as is or fuck off.

>>
>>71483610
desu I think maybe this is just it
people land here, learn the /mu/core, and flock elsewhere
but how on earth is fucking /r/indieheads a better place than here
>>
>>71483688
also fuck I need to learn what the word swaps are now
>>
>>71483638
Got an email address?

I find the only proper way to facilitate any sense of community through this board is plucking out individual anons and keeping in touch somehow.

People even went far enough to start a whole new chanboard, musikchan, guess what, it sucked too and is the same old /mu/core circlejerks because everyone here gets their music from the same places and post it every day.

>reading this thread
I guess this is it, huh? This board is really done for?
>>
>>71483942
No more than last year, the year before, the year before or the year before, /mu/ was never good and it hasn't changed.

There is nothing shit happening how that wasn't 5 years ago and there was nothing good happening then that isn't now.
>>
>>71478907
THIS is the true reason

Tripfags were the heart and soul of /mu/, the drama, the shitposting, the circlejerking is what kept this board alive and made it fun
>>
Read the whole thing listening to Daniel Johnston's Hi, How Are You

Bad fucking idea....

This notion of 'board culture' is about as nebulous and complex as it ever was, especially among the fastest and highest populated boards.

It would be easier to speak in regards to what this place would look like if there was no decline in post quality rather than what could fix it (i.e. nothing).

A healthy /mu/ would look like threads discussing non-canonical albums hitting bump limit and genre niche not being met with active hostility. b8 threads would be exchanged for sincere /mu/more, but it's impossible to speculate what that might look like. I suspect something like what hipinion is now.
>>
>>71484079
The actual first step is getting some dedicated mods to delete all the nonsense and /pol/bait. More moderation against waifufags too. No real discussion can happen when the board's clogged up with trash.
>>
>>71483385
Crossboarding teens shitposting under the guise of waifufaggotry are the true toxin that's killing /mu/.
>>
>>71484079
well for one thing actual discussion about new albums.
>>
>>71484148
lol, this is 4chan, most here are 17, never happened and it never will like that

"/mu/ is dead !!11!!!1!"

Fantano would have to kill himself / be assassinated.

Not a joke. Nobody talks about this because everyone uses it to some degree, but YT kiddies are cancer.
>>71484197
>Fuck off, shill
Sorry your garage revival bandcamp album never broke double digits, my man. Unfortunately, we're not really talking about you. Shut the fuck up, would ya?
>>
>>71484197
Or completely ignored because it's not got a p4k / fantano score
>>
>>71482144
It definitely was broheim

>>71482963
Omg fucking this, I remember being a little stupid freshman in high school with tons of emo I found on /mu/. Now everybody shits on dads because "you grow out of shitty teen music".
