Focusrite scarlet 2i2 is good. You can get them for £120 here in the UK. There are some good DAW bundles around as well, buy the software, almost get the hardware for free. Steinberg used to do some good cubase bundles.
>>
>>71469696
Define good. I have a Behringer Guitar Link and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, both do the job well. And by job I mean playing with Guitar Rig
>>

>>
>>71469981
move or find somewhere you can store them to go practice later
>>
When you buy strings for a fanned fret guitar, do you have to buy them all separately to get the gauges right for the string length you have? or do they have matched sets for guitars like these?

I would think using standard gauge strings would sound and feel sloppy, and sort of detract from some of the appeal of fanned frets in the first place.
piano and harp strings are purchased in individually for this reason. piano strings actually come on a spool and you make them to length yourself, which I always wanted in guitar strings. Its kind of fun you get to unwind the ends around the tuning peg yourself and can rewind them around the headstock portion of the string and not have a cut off loose end. I'm sort of a traditionalist though
>>
>>71470010
I actually live somewhere where I can kinda crank them, but I don't want to. I don't like to play loud and recording is impossible on low volume with these amps

if you don't like to play loud and don't use them for this reason, even when noise isn't an issue, then you should sell them

>>
>>71470110
imho there is no reason to have more than one amp unless you're gigging two different sets, like you do jazz gigs mon-wed and metal gigs on the weekend.

otherwise just learn to love what you have, and supplement with effects gadgets if you really feel the need. there is an infinite amount of pleasure to be derived from even an acoustic guitar alone, you don't need to keep adding and adding just to tweak it here and there. master what you have

Haven't been playing guitar for too long but I got a strat recently and after going to change the pickguard, my bridge pickup became unsoldered(?) from the pot and the 5 way switch. I was going to suggest against it but after establishing that mandocello is a legitimate member of the mandolin family, I think its kind of cool.

I don't ever see it fitting in with a bluegrass band but for a mandolin player I see the appeal, not many electric instruments designed to be tuned in fifths

not the cheapest strings in the world but definately available. there also seems to be nickel wound available

I always laugh when I see some dumb 19 year old buying a video game. It's like why, you dumb fuck? Why waste your time and money? You don't know video games are deader than horse shit? What the fuck do you think's going to happen? Why do you think everybody in their late 20s and early 30s stops playing games? Go take a look at the lineups of all the MLG tourneys these days. What's the average game at most of those bands? League of Legends. Why do you think that is? I'll tell you why: because being poor as shit is only fun when you're a stupid ass kid. Just as soon as your peer group moves on to adult pursuits you look fucking retarded being the "cool kid who plays vidya". Trust me, when all your family and friends have stable jobs, kids, and nice houses your "autistic poverty" playing twitch out of an old dilapidated rust covered laptop won't measure up anymore. It's like.. think about what your doing, you dumb little shit. What are you trying to achieve? Do you really think you'll be one of the lucky few who'll wins the lottery and has a successful career in MLG? I mean, really? Do you really think you're talented and smart enough to succeed in the YouTube industry? Are you fucking stupid?

And don't give me all that "I do it for myself" bullshit either. lol, no fuck you don't. You're doing it in the hopes that one day it'll garner you some peer recognition, you're hoping it'll help you climb up socially one day. You do it because you're a fucking loser who wants to desperately escape the societal pecking order you feel has marginalized you. Name a famous gamer who started off wealthy. Oh, you can't? That's who you think you are, loser. You want that same success and you know it. Only problem with your plan is noone cares because video games don't matter anymore

Go to school, get a real job, and stop wasting your time trying to score "cool points" with other impressionable moron kids like you. You ain't gonna make it, you fucking idiot

Get a fucking clue

I think it's great when people pick up the instrument realize how much commitment and discipline it takes and drop it and in the end can only envy and respect those who stick with it.

In other words the only way for other people to understand is for them to try something themselves and fail at it

What are "standard gauge strings"? This tells us nothing. There is no "standard". The only time you'd have to get crazy gauges is if you had a long scale length and/or an extended range guitar in some low tuning for the "djents" so your intonation wouldn't be ass and your strings buzzing all over the place.

Not to mention, you're asking this on /gg/. Ain't no one one here got any experience with anything but practice amps and Mexican fenders.

>>
>>71471106
That still doesn't make my point any less valid.
>Only takes commitment and discipline to master it
Subjective statement
It takes commitment to even buy the instrument, take the time to learn anything, and then practice it to the point where it actually resembles music.
There's a lot of value in effort.

those aren't thing you want anon.

On more serious note, the ONLY hi-gain amp I've owned that I even remotely liked the onboard gain was the ENGL Invader 100. For the time being, I would HIGHLY recommend the S&K VHD distortion for a high gain pedal.

That sounds really interesting. A progressive version of Burzum is something I would be willing to listen.
>>
>>71471106
in my experience most people don't even know what competent/intermediate is

competent to me means you can play with other players and not look stupid. if you're playing with me and want to look competent you better be able to play in every key, and I'd say maybe 5-10% of self proclaimed competent guitar players can actually do that

I think most players never even tried it long enough to realize the level of commitment it takes to actually learn the instrument, not just memorize a few tabs to fake knowing your way around the instrument

more recent tube amps like the laney aren't really tech that's just going to stop working all of a sudden, they're built like a tank usually and there's nothing really fragile about them other than the tubes
so make sure to test it in person and watch and listen for any defects like crackling, noise and microphonics that might indicate tube wear
so maybe factor in a set of replacement power tubes which is like $90 ish for most 100w amps

I'd much rather have 2 300-400 euro guitars than one 1000 euro guitar, you won't really find a terrible guitar these days, unless you're buying some weird ass branded guitar for less then 200 euros

piano, organ, banjo, all the brass instruments, drumset, fiddle, mandolin, keyboard percussion, and a few others it doesn't even matter

the point is that guitar players are literally a diamondozen. most of the groups I've played with were so saturated with guitarists that they had to take turns playing songs.

If I went to a large crowd of people and asked who played a musical instrument, the vast majority of hands raised would be guitarists, at least in the US

I really want to buy a Fender Jaguar but I'm torn between a classic model and the HH model. I know humbuckers are kind of odd for a Jag but apparently it's got switches you can roll back to get the single coil tone (sort of a coil tap thing i guess) But I'm worried that the single coil sound might not sound as good as a genuine single coil Jag would.

What would you suggest?

If it doesn't matter that much to you then just get it. I have a MIJ Jaguar but I can't really speak to how well the pickup selection works/sounds on the HH models.

I owned it for literally less than 24 hours. I bought a Sunn 300T for $100, replaced a couple components and retubed it, then traded it for the ENGL. The ONLY reason I even traded for the ENGL was to trade it for another Matamp. I will admit though, it really had me considering keeping it though. I just like clean amps better.
>>
>>71471871
>>71471943
Also I would actually suggest a Jazzmaster over a Jaguar to you. Much better variation in sound on those pickups.
>>
>>71471871
Depends if you're just playing for you then just pick whatever fits what you like.

Kind of ends there because no one who plays for money would be dumb enough to ask a serious question like that here.

Don't buy a jag in the first place is my advice
>>
>>71471871
I had the HH model, it was nice but god damn those things get thrown out of whack so fast. If you're half decent at setting up guitars it shouldn't be a big deal. The humbuckers aren't too hot if that's what you're worried about.
>>
>>71471871
In my experience coil tap/split sounds are just as good as actual single coil sounds... becaue they essentially are the real thing. I know there's technically some difference but it would only be noticeable if you compared side by side two identical guitars, one with a humbucker coil tap and another with single coils.

That being said I'm sure there's youtube videos you can watch to get an idea of the tone for each. If you're lucky someone might compare a classic Jag to the HH.
>>
>>71471950
Fuck yes. Get the positions down for the main scales and the neck opens up. Lets you shift keys easier as well (modulate)
>>
>>71472034
>those things get thrown out of whack so fast
Could you elaborate please? Also, how does the coil tap or whatever it's called work on the HH? Can it get a good single coil tone?
>>
>>71471643
This. I play keys in an open jam group and it usually ends up being myself, a bassist, and 5 or more guitar players. One of them usually ends up playing slide to add a bit of variety. Guitar is absolutely the worst instrument to learn if you ever want to play outside your bedroom.

>>71472116
Switches and knobs? Is this a troll post? Fender got rid of those on the new models anyway. The Jaguar doesn't even have a full scale neck.

The pickups are only good at playing bright twangy sounds. No breadth at all.
>>
>>71472116
they're all just there to make it sound like shit
>>
>>71472122
Being a competent bass player in a cover band has got to be in the top 5 easiest jobs ever... of anything. You just learn to play the root notes to like 100 simple songs. Nobody gives a fuck about you and nobody will notice if/when you fuck up, not even your own band. And then at the end of the night you'll walk away with just as much money as all the real musicians who actually had to work hard to impress people and make sure they didn't fuck up.
>>
The only and I mean ONLY reason to get a Jaguar over a Jazzmaster is that it looks prettier. But is that a real reason to begin with?
>>
>>71472078
Personally I do extensive research on an instrument before getting it.

Just seems like some money grab instrument to reel in more profit from people who don't do research.

I have no experience with the instrument so take what I say with salt.
Just look at what artists inspire you or w.e do you see any of them using one extensively?

The ones I like generally use pretty simple instruments that lie on the high end
>>
>>71472152

Imagine being the bass player in a band like Weezer or Foo Fighters. Those fucks get to live the dream of every young musician night after night, playing to arenas of dedicated fans. And there's no fucking pressure involved, nobody knows who they are and you can't really hear them anyway. They get to just spend the whole show soaking up the spectacle of it all.
>>
>>71472180
People are much more likely to notice if the bassist fucks up. As a bass player you don't have to do anything complicated, but you do have to get it right. Most of the shows I go to, the guitarists fuck up all the time and no one can tell.

>Just look at what artists inspire you or w.e do you see any of them using one extensively?

Well yeah, I like a wide variety of music and wanted to get a guitar that would be good for playing more Alternative/Indie stuff. I also like Shoegaze so I figured a Jaguar would cover all of that pretty well.

>>71471871
Unless you are playing punk or metal just get the single coil.

The humbuckers are thick but to me they all sound like low end trash pickups you find on every single asian guitar.

The single coils are really much more interesting for playing anything that isn't high gain.
>>
>>71472265
Really? I mean it obviously depends on the type of band but that's not my experience at all. I've seen numerous local bands (both original and cover bands) where the bass player was clearly only playing root notes and you could hardly hear him.

The guitarist fucking up is easily more obvious, but sure a lot of non-musicians would be more likely to not notice. But I can't imagine your average music listener noticing a bass player fuck up over a guitarist fuck up.

15 watt can be a lot with an efficient speaker, so if you want to really distort that shit on bedroom level you need to drop the power

This.

People need to stop trying to sell the meme that you need huge wattage for playing in a bedroom.

It's not like you're going to max the settings ever so that makes it come up a waste of money and resources
>>
>>71472395
Your goal should be to get out of the bedroom though. Obviously you don't need a fucking 100 watt amp and a cab but at least get something that's at least 30 watts so if the opportunity to go out and jam or play an open mic somewhere arises you won't get fucking laughed at.
>>
>>71472354
Perceived sound doesn't correlate well with watts. Those things will drive a 4x12, and as they run hot, the sound is amazing. You need more, for a big room, mic it through the PA.

It's not so much a humbucker vs. single coil dilemma for me. It's more a question of if the HH coil tap sound is good compared to a genuine single coil sound.

If it is then I would obviously go with the HH because it would be more diverse. But if it sounds like shit then I would just go with a regular Jaguar.

15 watts is plenty for playing out though. I know your brain is struggling to accept this because you'll instantly regret spending 2 grand on that 100 watt head when you could have bought something 1/3 as cheap that's probably better.
>>
>>71472354
Tube amps aren't solid state amps.

They are designed to sound good at a certain volume.

If you buy a Fender Twin Reverb you basically have to play it in a large venue volume to hear the sound it was designed to create. At low volumes it sounds like muddy. When you turn the tube amp up past its sweet spot in volume the sound breaks up and you get that really sweet distortion.

If you have a 7 watt amp and you turn it up all the way you can get a killer distortion at low volume.

If you have a 85 watt amp you have to turn up loud enough that a whole stadium can hear it in order to get that same tone.

However, fender makes the Princeton which is kind of the 15w version of the blackface Twin Reverb sound. Its good for low volume and recording but not for playing shows.

No I think its a good idea for him to go single coils because they are give out the classic sound of the guitar where humbuckers on the guitar really just sound like humbuckers on any other guitar.

If you want a jag for its sound the humbuckers ruin it. If you want a jag for its looks but don't like its somewhat thin sound put humbuckers on it.

I just think if you want a humbucker guitar get a gibson and get the thick sound you want unless you enjoy the aesthetic of the jag.

>>71472495
The Jaguar Fender currently sells doesn't have coil splitting, which is just using one of the two magnet coils in the humbucker.

it has Coil tapping dials that let you turn down the output of each humbucker. It lets you go from Nirvana high output guitar sound to more of a classic ES-335 low output humbucker sound but you won't get a single coil out of that guitar.

Its a cool feature but you should make sure you are ok wiht the short scale before you commit.

So to begin, I am not good at setting up guitars. I can do plenty of electronics work, but I've never really had the knack to do proper setups, so I bring it to a friend of mine. My jag used to get through maybe 2 or 3 re-stringings before it was really in a state of shit playability and poor intonation. And before some cunt comes in here, yes, I can restring just fine. The stock bridges on them suck, and it's a pretty well known fact. I'm not saying that in a snobby way, it's only because I didn't buy into it and passed it off as 4chan being a bunch of shitbags, but I quickly discovered the stock bridge does indeed suck.

As far as the coil split goes, it's pretty subtle unless you've got real crazy ears. It doesn't just magically get perfect single coil tone with a clean signal, but you can definitely notice a chance once you've got it run into some different types of dirt. I used to just set it and forget it, I don't need another thing to twiddle with in the middle of rehearsal.

All in all, I do not think you'll be wowed by any modern production classic player Jaguar. However, every guitar center on the planet has one so it's worth trying out. I have a few friends who swear by theirs.

honestly man, from somebody that owns a pile of 4x12s, you dont need a full stack to rehearse. I run a 1x12 with a EVM 12L and a sunn concert bass for rehearsal and it's plenty (for guitar). Just going for comfort is best way to go, since fanned guitars will usually have separate bridge pieces for each string, so you don't really need to worry about any intonation issues. The best general rule is to go for a set where the tension of the highest string feels good, the difference in tension on the low strings won't be an issue in 90% of string sets, bear in mind that fanned scales can actually lend themselves to better intonation and more balanced tension than a standard scaled guitar anyway.

In terms of playing it it really doesn't feel all that different, the only sets I wouldn't bother with are those "Skinny top / heavy bottoms" ones, since the scale will help compensate that on a standard set.

That said I would recommend that if it's for an extended range guitar you go for a 6 string set you like and purchase the 7th, 8th, 9th etc as singles, I personally use the D'Addario Jazz light wound third set (.012-.052) with a .064 and an .080 bought separately.
I find that this works the best for the tuning I use while still having the option to tune up to standard (albeit with a slightly tense G).

If you're just playing in standard or half a step down something like a .010-.046 might be more to your taste, but it's all subjective, I prefer my strings to be pretty tight whereas you might prefer a looser feel for strumming chords or maybe you like the slight pitch bend you get when hitting a string hard.
But like I said, any "normal" 6 string set, as long as the highest string feels good, will be comfortable and will sound great, it's all up to your preference at the end of it.

They're pretty nice sounding, the cleans especially I really like, super clear sounding without too much quacky-ness, distorted they have really good not definition, although can sometimes sound a bit boxy, but with the right eq it usually isn't too hard to fix.

They're great for anything clean through to hard rock and classic metal sounds, wouldn't be my first choice for anything super heavy but they're a really strong all rounder.

Find the most expensive guitar in his shop and buy the same model from Musicians Friend and take it in the store and show it to him and ask what size strings it takes. Then don't buy any saying "Meh, too expensive, I can get them cheaper from Musicians Friend." and then walk out and return the guitar to MF and get your 30 day refund guarantee. He will never forget it.

you're probably trolling, but:

major and minor are the same scale, the name changes based on the root and the intervals following the root. that scale is A minor because the root is A, but change the root to C and its a c major, same notes same position.

Yeah well it usually end in music theory fags coming in and making things 10x more complicated by trying to count intervals string by string and learn scales that way which is ridiculous.

learn the shapes, start coming up with licks, you'll be having so much fun it wont be practice and you can fill in the technical stuff later

You're pretty angry buddy. I want to tell you that is is still possible to make a living from a fresh new channel on youtube, but finding that niche and cross-marketing is the hard part.

I don't have any friends or any family members I hang out with and this is about as close to a social network I get. I don't have time for friends and I really don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, I actually feel you normal people with fiends and a social life are missing out on something I've figured out. Like all this productivity and work I get done. I wouldn't be able to do it if I had friends.

I still play games now, actually now more than ever, but much more productively and pretty much only exclusively to create content for my youtube channel. No it's not a stupid lets play channel. It's interesting to some people and there isn't really a youtuber out there now covering what I am with the same level of professionalism or even voice over. I hope to actually have my own professional documentary-type internet series one day, on amazon or netflix or something.

High hopes I know, but pretty soon, it might be closer than it seems. If viewing figures keep up and subscribers keep growing like they are I will be lucky enough to say that I will be able to make a proper living off youtube. That seemed impossible to me just 12 months ago, but now it's becoming a reality and it's something I enjoy and really want to do.

Anyway, about to order this Les Paul Tribute Plus in beautiful Black Cherry. I don't think there is a better value deal out there right now if you want an LP. You get a case, decent pickups, decent wiring, a real maple cap, locking tuners. MusosCorner are selling them for just $899 here in aus. There's the cheapest I've found so far so I'll probably get it from them. A standard plus top pro is $699. I mean there is more than $200 worth of extra specs in the tribute+. A case will set you back about $150 alone.

>How can you be this musically clueless

No, they are fingerings. You can play the same scales with three-note-per-string shapes, which is nice because it keeps your picking consistent.

I think you are the musically incompetent one because you are ignoring the fact that there are multiple ways to play the same scales.
>>

Ive had a 333xl infinium since december 2012. Never had any issue with it. Cleans can be cleared up with some better pre amp tubes. Admitted there were some quality issues early on, and the tolex plus plastic knobs kinda suck.

Iirc some of the mesa have a selectable power setting. I know the bugera tri rec does.
