What she is, is actual underground music. Which is probably why you hate her so much. Now go fire on your Taylor Swift album and shake it off.

My feelings aren't hurt, I actually understand that music is subjective. What I can't understand is why there seems to be a concerted effort here to stop people from listening to Grimes themselves, and making the decision about whether they like her or not themselves.

It's so sustained, and pathetic.

Mainstream has more levels. Second tier mainstream still means a lot of popularity.

Too interesting to become mainstream, actually.

Here's the thing. Since the very beginnings of her career her goal have always been to establish a place for herself in the music world by mixing elements of mainstream commercial success with underground artistic appeal - i.e. EXACTLY what she is successfully doing right now.

In terms of what Claire Boucher set out to achieve, Grimes is a HUGE success in every way imaginable.

>Grimes's 2012 album Visions is getting the classical treatment from Montreal-based ensemble Plumes.

>The group, which includes singer/guitarist Veronica Charnley (of Flotilla), composer and multi-instrumentalist Geof Holbrook and harpist Éveline Grégoire-Rousseau, commissioned composers to rework tracks to take Grimes’s subversion of pop traditions even further down the road of deconstruction. Composers include Nicole Lizée, Marielle Groven, Cassandra Miller, Emilie LeBel and Toronto-based Monica Pearce.

>It’s fitting that Pearce should find herself tackling a composition based on the music of Grimes, a left-field pop star who’s been outspoken about the lack of recognition for female producers and technical talents. The issue of gender equity in classical music is one Pearce has continually pushed, as former general manager of the Canadian League of Composers and now as executive director at the Music Gallery.

[...]

>What is it about Visions that lends itself to this sort of reimagining?
>It’s really rich musically. The melodic aspects of the tracks are amazing. Veronica, Plumes singer, has this incredible voice but is very different from Grimes. It’s going to be quite different from the album, which I think will be really exciting.

Fwiw speaking as a total newcomer to all things LDR (had my very first listen to her entire discography just last week) imo she's one of the most alternative-sounding artists I've heard in years - if not decades.

Which imo might explain why her career still causes so much controversy. Based on my reading of her history/listening to her music she started out as indie with her self-titled debut, but didn't get anywhere with it. Next she hooked up with industry big-wigs, who of course decided to dress her up as the next big bland, commercially successful mainstream pop act - which she clearly isn't. Her music is too specifically focused for that. She's an alternative artist in the truest sense of the term.

It's a pity that she's destined to be forever remembered as having failed to achieve professional expectations that her music was clearly never suited to achieve. But that's just what happens to lots of people who let the music industry push them around too much when they're young.
>>
>>71468525
Yes, but she started out that way. In terms of how she relates to the rest of the music industry she is what is known as a left fielder.

>MW: In interviews about Visions, Grimes said she blacked out her windows and retreated into her bedroom to write because she wanted to be in complete isolation, not sleep, and even invite hallucinations. It’d be interesting to know if anyone is interpreting that aspect.
>GH: I don’t know, it’s possible that some of them are going through that experience right now because of the deadline! I’m a composer, I know how that is. I’m so curious to talk to them. We’re all in the dark; that’s what’s so interesting. This is the first time we’ve done commissions, so it’s a whole other experience.

Interesting thing about the interview >>71473468 posted
https://maisonneuve.org/article/2011/03/4/interview-grimes/

We get a glimpse of the writing process behind Halfaxa, something I haven't been able to uncover any other information on.

>When I was really hot, overheated and at my dad's wedding and feeling good in the summertime, I made Halfaxa, which is depressing and dark.
comfy.

I think its interesting how each album she's done has had an exponentially longer time between recording and release.

I really want to know how involved she was as a director. Since it credited her so prominently in the title cards I'd hope she was very hands on and actually brought something worth while to the shoot rather than just presenting ideas for what she wanted and let all the Tidal money make it look good.

Grimes was really involved. If you don't know, she's a big control freak. She pours her creativity into her projects.

>Venus Fly is now on youtube! i would especially recommend watching it in 4K, i coloured it (with great help from @hanatruly ) for 4K viewing so that's prob the best way to watch haha. this video really means a lot to me for many reasons. first off, i've been a huge fan of janelle monaé since she debuted. i've always admired her genre bending, ground breaking art, sonically and visually. Collaborating with her was a dream come true, and i learned so much about songwriting and directing from her. furthermore, im on an independent label so i've never come close to having access to the kind of equipment/resources we had here(thank u Tidal!!!).

>i put my whole heart and soul into this project; conceptualized, directed, edited, coloured and post-prod, nearly destroying my computer in the process lol. I hope y'all can feel the love and i hope this video takes u to a trippy alternate dimension where giant humanoid eva's play w bubbles made of what i imagine the christofilos effect looks like ( trapped charged particles along magnetic lines of force ). it is most assuredly not a realistic depiction, it's just a vision i've had in my mind for a while since i began studying the cold war earlier this year. thanks so much u guys for caring about our art Link in bio

I'm not bothered by the credit anymore. I knew she's a control freak, and has a ton of ego, but I wasn't sure if she was just the idea person and had someone else composing the shots and doing visual effects based on what she asked for.

I'm finishing up film school so I know that just because someone "directed" something doesn't always mean they were the one who made ot possible.

Grimes was obviously helped by a team for most special effects. Also some FX that seem CGI are actually real life effects (e.g. the flames on the swords, those flames on her hands and those huge bubbles).

That's the link with the Cold War:

>The Christofilos Effect refers to the entrapment of charged particles along magnetic lines of force that was first predicted in 1957 by Nicholas Christofilos. Christofilos suggested the effect had defensive potential in a nuclear war, with so many beta particles (electrons) becoming trapped that warheads flying through the region would see electrical currents so great that their trigger electronics would be damaged. The concept that a few friendly warheads could disrupt an enemy attack was so promising that a series of new nuclear tests was rushed into the schedule before a testing moratorium came into effect in late 1958. These tests demonstrated that the effect was not nearly as strong as predicted, and not enough to damage a warhead. However, the effect is strong enough to be used to black out radars and disable satellites.

>Otherkin are a community of people who socially identify as partially or entirely non-human. Some of them surmise that they are, either spiritually or genetically,[2] not human, however this claim is unsubstantiated. This is explained by some members of the otherkin community as possible through reincarnation, having a non-human soul, ancestry, or symbolic metaphor.[1] Some scholars categorize this identity claim as "religious", because it is largely based on supernatural beliefs.[3] Adherents more typically deny the religiosity of otherkinism, referring to it instead as simply a congenital condition, or a metaphysical state of being.[4]

I have felt the same way many times. I have heard so many stories from people I know very well that they couldn't hear his voice at first. I know it is very very very frustrating at time but you cannot cannot give up. I am always praying for you if you didn't know. I always pray for the most important people in my life. Now is the time to pray harder and tell God that you are having trouble with faith. Trust me that he will listen and be there. God gives us our answers in many ways. Not just talking back. You just have to have persistence with him, I really don't want you to give up on him. I know that I seem like one of the most catholic and holy people you know but I have trouble too. A lot of trouble sometimes and it makes me so mad when bad things happen or I don't feel a connection. I found what helps me is prayer through writing in a journal. I try to write in a prayer journal every night and just talk. Talk to him about anything that's going on, good and bad. Trust me it works sooooo well. It would break my heart and Gods heart to see you give up on faith Sophie. Sometimes even praying to Mary can be just as effective. Ask her for her intercession to help you not give up on God. Pray to your favorite saint, st Therese actually is a great one because she feel in love with the Lord at such a young age, 15 so praying to her will help. Sophie if you ever need to talk about more I'm here. I encourage you to maybe go with my to my youth group this year because it's very effective. I encourage you to even say I love you God at random times because that's a prayer. I also love listening to 4 songs that give me a spring in my step and make me believe. Lay me down by Passion
Forever reign by Hillsong
Wide as the sky by Matt redman
The lost are found by Hillsong
I love you so much and SO DOES GOD. Do not give up.

Is there any logical reason why you would fucking say that post is underrated? Has anybody expressed any kind of dissatisfaction or criticism at all against it? Are you delusional? Are you reading replies that are nonexistant? Maybe you come from communities with voting systems, but there is literally no way that you could know what other people think of that post you just replied to here. Maybe it's psychological. Maybe it's your own post you're replying to, like a 12 year old fucktard liking his own facebook posts thinking his swelling autism is going unnoticed. Maybe your self esteem depends on you tricking yourself into thinking someone out there thinks your post is worth something. Or maybe you are just a retard, the worst kind of retard, the one who thinks he's smart, the one who thinks he's the only one to have gotten the joke, to have understood the post.
