why isn't mu discussing album of the decade?
>>
Father John Hipster
>>
Because we've already reached the indisputable consensus that it's the album of the decade. Nothing more to say.
>>

His songs are so trivial and bourgeois and he tries to masquerade as some artistically brilliant dude who is smart enough to see what's really going on. He really seems like an awful man.
>>
>>71444701
How does he try to masquerade as that?
>>
>>71444925
It's clear through the vapid social commentary in combination with the emotional treatment of the object that he thinks he is delivering some profound wisdom

How do you know it isn't valid commentary and emotion?

vapid does not mean invalid it just means it has very little worth with regards to actual discourse
>>71445154
i'm a socialist
>>
>>71445203
No you specifically said "masquerade" which implies dishonesty and the state of being artistically invalid.

Answer the question without backpedaling please
>>
>>71445203
nat soc isn't really socialism
>>
>>71445008
I don't think that's clear at all. He makes the music, so he clearly believes in it and thinks what he's doing is worthwhile (although he mocks that idea at times), but you're the one simply inferring the masquerade. Also there are some, myself included, who find the social commentary not at all vapid. While it's nothing necessarily groundbreaking (and I think we can all admit most lyrical content is not for most artists), it's pretty spot on for the most part, substantive, and far from other more tawdry subjects one could write about.
>>
>>71445154
Not an argument. The anon in question is very coherent and presented his argument thoughtfully. Why can't you do the same?
>>
>>71445221
yes masquerade as in he believes his music has more meaning and value than it really does
>>
>>71445238
1) How do you know the amount of meaning he intends and 2) how do you measure actual amount of meaning it contains?
>>
>>71445251
is it not obvious that he intends a great deal of meaning with a song like "Bored in the USA"? And the actual message of the song is fairly shallow. Not that I expect it to be philosophically meaningful, but there is an apparent disconnect between the intent and the product. His music is fine though. He's like if Lana Del Rey were a man, except Lana Del Rey is more interesting as a pop music construct
>>
>>71445310
No, that's not obvious. It's more of a lament, and seems structured that way (as in his intent), not a deep thinking piece.
>>
>>71445310
>is it not obvious that
Self-evidence is not an argument. State your specific evidence.
>And the actual message of the song is fairly shallow.
How so? Have you charted out the song and taken into consideration the harmony and the voice leading as it relates to the lyrical content? or are you just listening to the lyrics (lol)?

Also show us your annotated lyrics with the references you made in regards to it's intertextuality.
>>
>>71445338
wow i had no idea indie fans were so obtuse! I'll get back to you with my annotations (:
>>
>>71445379
>obtuse
What do you mean? The standard method of interpreting songs is "obtuse"? Maybe you're just used to
>muh feels

>I'll get back to you with my annotations (:
Sure you will.
