Depends on what you'd call a gimmick. Something an artist usually does is not always a gimmick. A gimmick is something that obscures the artistry of the music somehow to have something external (aka irrelevant) to appeal to you.

Now in the case of someone like Lightning Bolt, whose drummer often dons masks during their performances, it's not only functional (his mic gets wrapped into it), but totally unnecessary. People would lose their shit at Lightning Bolt shows no matter what he wore.
