Memes aside, it's disappointing how almost every song now is a variation on Bored in the USA or Holy Shit. It works well as a standalone thing at the end of ILYHB, but when every track is trying to do the same thing it gets preachy. His take on love is much better than "LOL religious people are stupid!". Instrumentals are really nice at least.

You can try to avoid answering actual posts all you want, it'll only make you look dumber. You can't even ironically claim to be smart if you feel at all "enlightened" by what Joshua sings -- feels like stuff I'd have thought were the absolute shit when I was 14 and just finding out that the world was more than cartoons. These are all pretty tired ideas, especially the incredibly cliche'd rant on religion and the songs repeat themes amongst themselves.

This album was pretty obviously an attempt to emulate Bored In The USA, forgetting the fact that the track stood out because it was the only one of its kind in ILYH, and the rest of the album was filled with sincere and poignant messages to balance it out, it wasn't just sarcastic diarrhea. Anyone who thinks making "social commentary," and even more so, ironic social commentary, is anything remarkable nowadays oughta be shot. But TECHNOLOGY IS SO BAD AMIRITE PPL

>>
>>71405521

>>
>>71405521
>still can't articulate why this album is good

>>
I don't know what all this arguing about politics is all about, but I sincerely just don't really like this new material.

Bored in the USA was by far my least favorite song off of Honeybear, and as others have said pretty much all these new songs are in that style. Musically it doesn't give you much to be interested in and it relies solely off whether you buy into what he's selling. He's a good songwriter in terms of how he presents his ideas, but when dealing with such heavy and wide reaching concepts like the American dream or whatever his ideas and insights themselves come off as pretty shallow and vacuous. He should've stuck with the sillier stuff.

Also, those performances just weren't that good. He was pretty pitchy and his voice didn't seem to have the weight it usually.

And I guess this isn't really related but just watch this old SNL performance by Fleet Foxes. Completely blows him by himself out of the water.

Great post. Also thought his live performances were very weak. I don't know if it's my headphones but his voice seemed really low, the singing was off and he looked like he was about to cry.

People getting trigged by negative opinions need to shut the fuck up quickly, I liked his first album and loved Honeybear. This is a step in the wrong direction and a lot of people seem to think so as well. He needs to be aware of this instead of living in his little hugbox which allowed this album to exist in the first place. Tillman is smart, but he's no philosopher. The strongest parts about Honeybear were the raw bouts of honesty and dark humor, also I thought musically it was great too. This music now feels dead, it's just done for the message.
>>
>>71405686
I'm sorry but what does that prove? What about his insights are lying "below the surface" like you suggest? I'm not gonna go read some unspecified interview you mentioned.

I'm not even saying I necessarily disagree with a lot of what he's putting forth, just that they don't justify the bombastic (yet still somehow, boring) arrangements he's using.

I don't know why people always complain about that. It's basically just a way to deliver the melody/harmonies where lyrics would be inappropriate. Vocalists have literally been doing that for centuries.

And even if you find it grating, at least give Fleet Foxes a break since they were doing first in the whole indie sphere. Everyone just started copying them.
>>

>>71405830
This is Father John Misty we are talking about. Remember that. Most of what he's saying in these songs is cynical but that's intended but there's also his characteristic self-awareness in it. After all, he called the album Pure Comedy, which has two meanings to it in the first place. I do not think you need to buy into to what he is saying in order to enjoy the lyrics themselves.

>>71405978
Holy jesus dude, yes I get that there are tinges of irony and cynisicm to it, I'm saying that whole schtick has gotten tired and uninteresting.

I shouldn't have used "buying into what he's selling". I was using that specifically to refer to the fact that these songs solely rely off what you get out of the lyrics as everything about them musically is incredibly weak. It's just ballad after ballad with barely any memorable melodies and overblown instrumentation.

And again, I don't think any of what he's saying justifies that. He's basically just writing thinkpieces as songs, and not even that good of think pieces.
>>
>>71406084
But why? He's not adding anything interesting or reframing them. He's just stating what every 14 year-old with an internet connection learns on their first week at reddit.

>Imagine how much fun you guys would've had with Bob Dylan.
Bob Dylan used metaphors and poetic imagery, FJM is lyrics without poetry. Artless banality.
>>
>>71406159
Hahah, I can't believe that retard actually considers FJM to be anywhere near Dylan's level.

To further your point, A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall was written 53 years ago and it gives more useful insights into our current social/political situation than anything on Pure Comedy, which will sound outdated in 2 years.
>>
ew
>>
>>71406110
>>71406141
>>71406155
I think there is one example that perfectly illustrates why this feels off, and how FJM has become what he wrote about.

Holy Shit was one of my favorite songs off Honeybear, and it really tied the whole album together, particularly because of the ending in which he sang

>Oh, and love is just an institution based on human frailty, what's your paradise got to do with Adam and Eve?
>Maybe love is just an economy based on resource scarcity
>But what I fail to see is what that's gotta do with you and me

In this song, he is repeating the same old and tired concepts and criticisms and also tossing them aside in favour of a more honest and immediate way of thinking, he's no longer being so cynical about the world. This is echoed in I Went To The Store where he says he "never thought it'd be so simple" to fall in love.

Pure Comedy is exactly the first three lines I quoted without the ending. It is JUST the tired, old, senseless commentary with nothing personal to it.

>"A lot of the time, those are artists who end up getting saddled with the 'pretentious' tag, whether that's Terrence Malick or Charlie Kaufman, Kurt Vonnegut. I think that, in my work, you hear somebody asking these questions. On the first album it was 'Who am I?' and on the second album, it was, 'What is love?' On this album, it's 'What does it all mean?'

>"I wanted to make music in the studio, instead of making tracks, so for the first time, I got a rhythm section together instead of just Jonathan [Wilson, producer] and I playing everything. I got a rhythm section together, we rehearsed for months, and then we got into the studio, and tracked guitar, bass, drums, piano and vocals, all live.

>"Some of my favourites, you know, if you listen to Hunky Dory or something, the best songs on that record are piano, bass, drums and hand claps, and they sound massive. It just feels a lot more deliberate."

>"When I was growing up — especially when I was a teenager — I had this sense that as soon as I got out of the house, and out of the church, then I wouldn't live in 'crazy-world' anymore. And then I got into the 'real world,' so to speak, and realized that it was just as convoluted and insane as the church. I started seeing parallels all over the place, a lot of religious thinking that people just didn't call religious thinking. That made life very isolating, you know? And I still feel really isolated to a certain extent; I still feel like I can't quite connect with a lot of people."

It's the complete lack of subtlety or symbolism in any form in Pure Comedy that gets to me.

He's not saying anything other than what he is actually saying. I know people call this sort of trash "sincerity" like what Mark Kozelek does, but it's not lyricism. It's narrative without substance or poetics. At least when Nick Cave does it it is interesting because there is a meaningful line thrown in here and there.

These motherfuckers think they are Bob Dylan, but they don't realize what made Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan, It wasn't writing ten pages of lines and name drops, it was stringing many small lines of surreal lyrics together into a woven thread of thoughts.

>"The internet was supposed to be this new democracy, a utopia of information where everyone had a voice and we were all inter-connected, and we would experience true democracy — and it turned into pornography, followed only by outrage."

>"It's existential, which is maybe a bit too dignified of a word for it, but I mean, it really is a love letter to humanity.

>"When you fall in love with someone, you don't fall in love with the parts of them that make sense, or are explicitly beneficial; you fall in love with the fucked up, and the wounded, and the bizarre. Those are the things about people that you fall in love with, what solicits your empathy. Because you recognize those same things in yourself. And it's an incredible relief when you realize that those things that make you flawed exist in other people. And that if you can have empathy for them, maybe you can have empathy for yourself, too."

Reminder that Father John Mistry is an industry plant nu-male faux-intellectual currently being heavily shilled by his management/label here.

>is an industry plant
What does this even mean?
>>
>>71406368
Fuck off. I wish I worked for Sub Pop.
>>
>>71406360
copy and pasted wrong

>"I had written these songs and had this realization that was like, 'This album can't be about humanity if there's not a portrait of a living, breathing human being smack in the centre of it.' It's like, 'Okay, we're taking this really macro view of humanity, this really kind of reductionist view; now we need to go deep into the fears and humanities of a real human being, to give it perspective.'"

Can this guy just go away?

If you need the artist to explain what their work is about, then the work has failed.

And yes, I get the argument you and he are making, I'm saying that it has failed. These songs sound declarative, not personal. If he was intending to make an album showing his subjective view of the world with all of it's cliches then he has taken the completely wrong approach.

And jesus christ, the fuckin ego on this hack to compare himself to Malick, Kaufman or Vonnegut. I agree people tend to overuse "pretentious" but this album is the definition of pretentious. An affectation of significance and insight without any insight.
>>
>>71406434
But he hasn't done that in the least. hasnt gone deep, hasn't even scratched the surface.
>>
>>71406455
Yes, all you have to do is close your tab.

Oh wait, it's you who actually can't stop listening to him. Guess you have to kill yourself then, anon.
>>
>>71406434
its like he decided to make a watered down version of what hes trying to accomplish
>>
@71406467
Brainlets don't deserve a response. If you can't even comprehend the album then this conversation is futile.
>>
>>71406503
you can't even comprehend the album without resorting to quoting an interview
>>
>>71406481
i listened to, at max, 20 seconds collectively of the videos above, never properly listened to a single one of his songs, and yet, he still manages to annoy the bejesus outta me, so you're right, I'll take my leave, not of life though, of this thread...:)

You need to see a doctor

and not Dr. John Misty, because he is clearly beyond your juvenile level of basic understanding.

How did a thread about some musician on SNL devolve into a Trump vs Hillary argument. I seriously hope you motherfuckers don't do this irl

this thread has turned me into a fleet foxes fan
>>
>>71402445
Oh thank the lord I'm not the only one thinking this.
Like seriously, instrumentation is going to be stellar on this album, but I am not readily prepared to hear him vent for AN HOUR about the world's problems.

And as far as lyricism goes (on these three singles), I don't feel it's as witty or clever as ILYHB. I'll probably still love it but ILYHB is definitely going to be his finest work for a while, a very special album for me personally.
>>
>>71401808
He is starting to look like Mark Kozelek
>>
>>71405635
>>71406840
Robin Pecknold's guitar playing and vocals are A++

Wouldn't mind seeing a solo album from him, but I hope he tones down the metaphorical overdrive on the new Fleet Foxes album.

>>71401808
This thread demonstrates why FJM is insufferable garbage.
>>
>>71401853
>father john misty fan accusing someone of having low iq

oh the irony
>>
>>71407894
He's confirmed that he is releasing a solo abum shortly after the new FF one so you're in luck.
