I'm checking what's that about, thanks anon.
>>71393696
First of all, I used other synth sounds. Someone said it was too muddy, other person said it was really messy, and someone else said it could be because of the relationship between the lead and the keys, and he was right, so I made the lead go slower i.e: less notes per bar, and that cleared everything up, I also panned both a bit and added a bit of reverb.

Sorry, newbie here. Looking into recording my own music. Im looking at an interface and a couple of mics right now. I'd love to be able to do live recordings of my own band one day too. What do you guys think? When is a mixer going to be required? will I even need one?
>>
>>71398367
If you want to do recordings of your band, you can use your software as 'the mixer', but the bottleneck here will be how many mic preamps / inputs your interface has. An interface that has 8 mic pres would be a good start, and many of them can be daisy chained together, such as the motu stuff, if you need more inputs later.

>>
>>71398367
To do live recordings of your band, you'll need an interface with a lot of inputs and preamps. Alternatively, an interface with an ADAT/optical in and out. Using that, you can expand to use more preamps.

For example the audient id22 interface as 2 preamps, but has an optical in and out to expand up to 8 more. Then I just need something like the focusrite octopre which has 8 preamps and can connect to the id22 through ADAT.
>>
>>71397011
Just face it, you'll never be famous.

You aren't special, no matter what your mommy tells you when you finish showing her ur shitty track and she has to lie to stop you from killing yourself.

You will never be a rockstar, you will never pioneer into new genres, you will never get the cars, the money, the women, or the attention.

You will never have young girls getting wet when they are in your mere presence.

But it's not like you had a chance to begin with? Martin Garrix went to an elite school of musicianship and has been producing for over 10 years, and he's only 20. At 18 he was touring the world, fucking bitches and getting money for producing child's play, whilst you fail to produce a musically coherent 4 bar loop.

There are thousands of producers like this, child prodigies just itching for a chance to show off their amazing work, and you honestly think you stood a chance? No, you don't even have the intellect required to be a producer, so even if you "grind"(cringe) you will get no where and will never finish anything.

By all means, keep feeding money to Native instruments and cymatics, but keep in mind your going to have to work 9-5 for the rest of your life, and probably put in a few extra hours a week to pay back your debts.

>inb4 Martin Garrix is bad.
No, as he gets more pussy than you and i'd prefer to listen to his shit over anything you have the courage to upload and call "music")

>inb4 "I just do it 4 fun xD"
You don't, stop lying to yourself. You secretly want to prove everyone wrong, but think people can't see through your pathetic facade.

there are some kinda unique and great working tools like the FG-X, but fuck all this microphone modeling nonsense and 300% more 'character' than the original bullshit. when even empirical labs bails out their contract to get a licensed slate distressor plugin and goes through the trouble of coding one from scratch themselves then you know this stuff just sucks

youre not pulling off higher pitched words and you go off beat sometimes

giving beats out for free is ok as long as you're not giving your best, only give a few away for free to get your name out, then start selling

Do any of you guys perform live with Ableton? If that's the case, how do you do it? Do you just use your controller as a DJ mixer and fade between songs/add some filters, etc? Do you make songs on the spot i.e: launching scenes and clips?

There are some effects that I haven't been able to simulate when playing live and that's one of the main reasons I think I should start djing my songs.

Read your drum machine's manual, then read the FL Studio support for FPC so that you know how to assign MIDI notes on both, and either assign MIDI notes on the buttons in FPC to correspond with the notes that your drum machine's manual says are assigned by default to the drum sounds, or change the default MIDI notes in your drum machine to respond to the notes that the FPC buttons send.

It's unlikely that both would be perfectly lined up straight out of the box, so this is why you're getting nothing happening right now.

>>
>>71411831
The arps are a bit too blurred and you can do better with what notes they play, the piano sounds too quantized and there's not a lot of variation velocity-wise.
>>
>>71411893

the pianos not quantized though I'm just a kind stilted awkward player...Thanks, now that you say it, I think the velocity issue is my main problem. my midi controller is pretty dead response wise, might have to manually set the velocities after playing. I;ll see how it sounds without the ridiculous release on the arp. Thanks anon.

the obvious answer that im surprised nobody posted yet is it depends entirely on the skill of who cracked it, and whether you have to use an ancient version or not. Some software legitimately is shitty when youre using a pirated version because it dls stuff from the net or something and those features are gone when they take out calls to home for example. Or you have to enter your serial number randomly over and over again. etc. dis is why its good to check what group did the rls before dling.

what's the best daw for recording and mixing?
the wiki says record in audacity and then export it to somewhere else, but can you do that? i thought audacity couldn't handle multiple mic inputs at a time, that it turns into one big sound mess, but am I wrong? Can I take an audacity recording, then put it in another daw, and mix there? what should I use in that case? pro tools? fl studios? is all of this only applicable if i multi tracked each recording one at a time or can i do this if i recorded everything live?

I'm trying to produce tech house, but I can't get my drums to sound good enough.

I've tried layering loops and samples (common practice for this sub genre), I've tried using compression and saturation where needed, I've even tried parallel compression aka New York compression, I've downloaded a lot of different sample packs, but nonetheless I can't get that "full" sound in my drums. It all sounds so flat and uninteresting, it doesn't sound like it works together or have any groove.

Here are two examples of what I'm going for:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z89joeg6KnE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkX_k-tj_Eo

I've produced quite a few genres in the past yet nothing has been harder than making decent tech house, which ironically seems "easy" to make, and most people say "it all sounds the same".

You need to turn it up to accurately mix your bass because your bass will turn out much louder if you keep it down all the time. But if you turn it to a whisper you can tell which other instruments need adjusting (apart from bass), and last longer without ear fatigue.

Other tricks are listening to different speakers and systems, your car and from another room.

Ghost notes on the piano roll is the ability to see notes from multiple channels when you're only working on one so you can get context and look at all the chords and whatnot, it's annoying not to have this.

>>71428588
na man, you fucking need to research further clearly.
Literally look up what midi is, its standards, how its used, why its used and how many devices use these standards already. More sysex and fragmentation is not a good thing for midi. That's great babies-first-daw does proprietary stuff on top of midi standard to make nuts and bolts midi programing easier to digest, but that doesn't change the reality that midi is an established standard that benefits when every device/software works within the same parameters and suffers greatly with sysex or other proprietary features.
>>
>>71428697

Hey /prod/, i tried to make my song sound stereo. tell me if i did well.

The song original recording in mono:
https://soundcloud.com/matanken/the-way-the-earth-circles-aroud-the-sun-makes-me-feel-dizzy

The song after splitting the guitar to left and right with a 30ms delay, adding a subtle vibrato to the right headphone side, and a subtle ping pong delay:
https://soundcloud.com/matanken/the-way-the-earth-circles-aroud-the-sun-makes-me-feel-dizzy-stereo

I also made versions without the subtle vibrato and without the subtle ping-pong, as well as versions where the delay between left and right is only 20ms, I'm still not sure what is the approach i should take...

Hey,

I'm having some real trouble with kick drums. I want to make my kick drums sound real punchy. I don't know how to explain it, but I don't want it to be "bass-y". I just want it to be punchy and light (not so light that it disappears of course.). Basically I want it to sound like every kick drum in every mainstream song.

I decided to read (and watch) up on kick drum compression/EQ-ing but I still can't get it to sound quite right. Do you guys have any tips on kick drums? I would really appreciate anything honestly.

https://clyp.it/233c13hp

Pic related, it's my compressor settings. I also increased the gain on the ~mid-low range with an EQ, didn't do much honestly.
>>
>>71431479
Punchy = Action in high frequencies
>>
>>71431479
start with a sample that doesn't sound like ass
then compress that with a longer attack to let some transient pass through
>>
>>71431567
I'm not experienced or anything though, i'm just telling you what i think looking at your description.

Usually thing sound punchier when there is more mid-high frequency action
>>
>>71408180
dope
>>
>>71431567
>>71431585
Okay, yeah now that I think of it, that does make sense. I just read an article where it was said that increasing the gain on mid-low would increase the punchiness. It help a little to be honest. I'll try gaining the mid-high range next time! Thanks dude.

>>71431574
Yeah, I agree. That sample is a little shit. Listening to it over and over made me realize that it had some noise at the end.

I will definitely try increasing the attack with a new sample and all. Thank you!
>>
>>71431567
>>71431889
Wishy washy descriptive words like "punchy" or "warm" or "spongey" and shit like that can be subjective and vague. There's not really a strict definition for most of them. Personally I would agree that punchy is more about the low mids. Some things like "dark" or "bright" are more obvious but some are less so.
>>
>>71432085
I agree with you! I don't like using those words, but I couldn't think of a better way to describe what I wanted the kick drum to sound like. I did however read an article in which the different parts of the kick drum were broken down and explained (like the click, mud etc..)

It just shows how much I have left to learn. I don't even know the correct terminology. It's fun though.

>>71431386
here's my 2 cents on this issue: deepthroat a morningstar and die, fucktard

god's sake nobody listen to this naive fuck. "Punchiness" is derived from transients which can happen anywhere on the spectrum that have short attack and usually short release times. One might argue actually, that in the case of kick drums particularly, this more often takes place in the low-mid end of things.

>Punchy = Action in high frequencies
Imagine you have a shitty, bland kick. You decide to layer the kick with a hi-passed sample that has a nice punch to it. The kick then will still sound like shit, but now will have some useless layer on top that'll probably get lost in the mix anyway.
Please stop posting, your music is mixed blandly and clipping. You're spreading misinformation like an idiot and derailing the thread.

note: careful with short attack/release times with bass instruments. it can cause funky looking waveforms and distortion because the compressor attenuates and then brings the level back up to normal before the wave cycle is completed

Sounds lovely, anon, You achieved a stereo mix. Watch out for some clipping/distortion that happens at 1:45 it throws off the spacey atmospheric vibe you have going. Other than that great work. Your guitar tones are nicely layered and have good depth and variation in spacing.
