It is Spiderland with electronics, more matured and reserved, less inspired by teenage angst. I don't say that to in any way detract from Spiderland, I think that album is incredible, it is the better of the two. But "The For Carnation" is a worthy and logical successor to it, it couldn't be more clear to me when listening to it that the two are undoubtedly connected.

"shitty slint" would maybe be true if you listened exclusively to "Fight Songs" but their debut album is incredible.

Trust me, I know what you mean though. To me, what takes the spotlight on Spiderland is his drumming as well, it always impressed me more than anything else. But once you kind of get over that and start appreciating "TFC" for its own approach to things, you start hearing those similarities between the two, and it really does feel like the spiritual successor.
