do we still do these? Let's talk noise.
whats the appeal of noise
whats the difference between good noise and bad noise
how to i get into noise
is noise music or not?
Undisputed best harsh noise album
>>71383612
Yes
No
Maybe
I don't know
Can you repeat the question?
>>71383612
Well, what's the appeal of music anyway?
It's personal what you like or don't
Start listening to noise
For some is, for some isn't
>>71383612
With noise music, there are some people who actually enjoy it because it is "primal" in a way or because they want to try it out, however, there are also people who listen to it to get extra credit on rym
it really is hard to tell the difference, the good noise usually has a much more obvious attention to detail
start with noise rock (sonic youth, glenn branca, dinosaur jr, butthole surfers) and when you think you're ready, listen to pic related
That's a hard question to answer
>discussing noise on a music board
>>71383626
>>71383702
is that the guy who tried to claim that grindcore isn't music? dear god that video made me want to die.
>>71383612
the appeal of noise is almost purely visceral. people get a kick out of the sensory overload that comes from fucking your skull with harsh sounds.
'good' noise is the noise you like to listen to/find some use in. 'bad' noise is the noise you don't.
get into noise by listening to it. start to parse the sounds and ideas you like and pursue those avenues.
whether or not it's music is basically not a relevant question. the only question you should be asking is, 'do i want to listen to it'? the means by which people consume noise is the same as the means by which people consume music, so there's no need for you, as a consumer, to make the distinction.
>>71383612
>what's the appeal of noise
it's different, that's for one. Some projects have conceptual sugar which is the hot thing all academic minded people are looking for nowadays.
>whats the difference between good noise and bad noise
dynamics and texture mainly. even if most noise doesn't use tonal systems it doesn't mean that it doesn't need work. Listen to a Rita record and then find a soundcloud artist. The difference is audible.
>how to i get into noise
There's a lot of charts you can use, also rym has a lot of lists on the subject. check it out
>is noise music or not?
it doesn't use tonal systems as mentioned so it's not music in the classical sense, meaning an arrangement of tones in time. But in the context of listening it becomes music. If you agree with the contextual approach that its. Here's when the above mentioned academic thinking goes in motion.
>>71383615
really a great album. one of the albums I find myself returning to.
>>71383692
Yeah, rating albums you've never heard of is a thing.
Listening to no wave could give you a new eye on things, since those guys really took a turn with their approach.
I would recommended just getting on with merzbow or >>71383615
you will get used to harshness in no time.
>>71383595
hello
I'm currently working on a record and I want to add some noise to one of my songs to make it sound panicky and make the listener feel stressed out
but I also want it to complement the tribal drum beats I'm adding in, too
how would I accomplish this?
also, what's some good equipment for making noise? I'm not really too keen on doing things digitally
I'd really rather use my hands and turn knobs and press buttons and stuff like that instead of clicking on things
Found this guy recently and just looking at what he does restored my interest in this type of sound. He uses a custom-built gear controlled by a game console keypad and a joystick as you can see. The output is kind of limited in its sonical charasteristics but the performance itself is noticeable to say the least.

>>71383842
what do you mean by rating albums you've never heard of? when i was talking about extra credit on rym, i meant poseurs who act like they like noise when they don't to seem cool
>>71383985
well most people use distortion pedals. you can route them in a mixer by making a feedback loop (input 1 into input of pedal, output of pedal into input 2(is just one of the ways you can do it). With a pedal and a mixer you can get a pretty good tone and volume control. If you want to stress people with it, I would suggest using rapid, short bursts, like a jump scare in a movie, since longer bits with no dynamics tend to bore people. On top of that you can get or build a contact mic and go wild with it.
Another popular approach is using field recordings and distorting them. Using something tribally like a windy plain soundscape with birds and shit and then maxing the ds-1 on it could really go well with some practice.
>>71384182
Well, it may be just memes, but I've seen image collages of people rating lost material on rym, or discussing/reviewing stuff that they clearly haven't heard. That's what I've meant.
Strangely, I haven't seen people who listen to noise without liking it, but I've seen people "defending" noise with blatantly stupid arguments.
>>71383626
You're not the boss of me now and you're not so big.
Noise is in a big way performance art as well. For instance, justice yeldham, who uses a contact mic on a plate of glass rubbed against his face to produce the root source of sound which is then manipulated. The performance ends with the glass being broken against his head.
Another aspect of noise is the passive anti "big music" stance. Much of the material released is very diy from recording right down to the packaging and production of albums. As a noise musician, I have never "sold" any material, but rather traded for others music and for collabs as well.
Also manipulation of electronics is a big thing as well. Look into circuit bending. It's a fun and rewarding process. I have also made sounds using a vintage tachometer generator stolen from a closed down textile plant which was then attached to a cordless drill which generated sound frequencies which although intended to be interpreted by a computer and converted into rotation speed measurement instead worked to produce a very interesting sound. Think a geiger counter on speed.
I heard a noise today.
Any and all "microphones" I've used were not microphones at all, but different variants on the idea of a microphone, being a diaphragm that captures vibrations which are transmitted across an electronic pickup. I've wired speakers as mics, used headphones plugged into the mic jack as a mic, made a monstrosity out of chains and speaker magnets, etc.
>>71384631
Your farts, right? Faggot frogposter.
Can someone help me with making noise on my Tascam portastudio 4 track? I want to use it as a noise instrument by using tape loops/feedback/effects..
There are many different types of "noise" as well and some appeal more to the general public than others. Harsh noise, wall noise, power electronics, found sound, etc.
>>71384722
I have that exact rig. I got so frustrated with using it for that that I instead used it for performance instead. I pre recorded different sounds to the 4 channels and cued them in as necessary.
I like Tim Heckers approach, specially An Imaginary Country and Ravedeath. I think i'm just more into melodies. Somehow the kind of unrhythmic, undmelodic kind of Noise never appealed me so much.

To understand the original appeal of noise search up, the art of noises. Noise has it's roots in a desire to push the complexity of timbres further in the modern age just as harmony and rhythm did, so it is pretty much a genre focused on exploiting the qualities of sound, although that aim varies from artist to artist.
>>71385990
Thanks. I work with hardware primarily but occasionally with accoustic instruments and Max. Most of the base composition comes from improv sessions recorded to 4 track.
I have a few performance videos but nothing online that I've recorded within the past year, and in that time the amount of hardware I have has increased considerably.

>whats the appeal of noise
It's different for everybody. Some people like the challenge, others are masochistic. For me, I like to meditate to noise music. I like losing myself in the chaos
>whats the difference between good noise and bad noise
Good noise has energy put into it, it's intense. and tends to complex
bad noise tends to be lazy and simple. like someone recording radio static and calling it art.
>how to i get into noise
Noise rock is a good starting place
>Is noise music or not?
it can be, it's a very loose defination of music
Anybody got suggestions for some nice, soft, atmospheric noise? I really need to sleep and somehow noise (not harsh noise, mind you) helps me do that. Lawrence English, Tim Hecker etc. Not sure if those qualify as noise though, I'm new to this shit so forgive me.

>>71397277
The point is, noise comes from pain. My whole life has been fucked. In and out of jail. Hardcore alcoholism. Severe depression. Multiple suicide attempts. I was welcomed into the noise community because we're all outsiders. I'm still not better because of it. But it got me by for a few years. I'm likely going to be dead soon. Nobody cares. Nobody wants to pretend to be sympathetic, but with noise. A few people heard my pain so in some capacity, I mattered. I'm done posting my soundcloud because nobody cared. I will from here be a statistic. Good night for the last time /mu/.

Honest question, what is his appeal? Even as someone who is pretty into noise I've never been able to appreciate him as anything other than a mediocre artist.
It's nice to wake up and see a good noise thread that isn't completely destroyed by shitposters.
>>71383612
>What's the appeal
For me it's like an extreme form of ambient music. Also I personally like how it plays an preconceived notions of what music is and what music can do.
>What's the difference between good and bad noise
For me it usually comes down to dynamics. A lot of harsh noise (especially Pulse Demon) for me is too one noted. You can still have interesting stuff that comes in and out of focus while still giving that "wall of sound" feel
>How do I get into noise
For me it was getting into noiser drone (something like Grandeur of Hair by Goslings). Also check out compilations (check out pic related) and then if you dig a track by a certain artist then dig into there discography.

Be sensitive and look for noises that make you feel uneasy.
The most basic method to make dynamic, painful noizu is getting yourself a contact mic that you attach to a metal plate, then you run it though several distortion pedals (preferably shitty ones like Digitech Death Metal that have insane amounts of gain) and then into the amp.
Microphone up the amp like you would with recording guitars and then fiddle around with the plate. Hit it, scratch it with screwdriver, fucking anything

anything can damage your ears if you play it at loud enough volumes. noise will only damage your ears if you play it at loud volumes for an extended period of time.
if you play it quietly or just below the threshold of 'loud' you should be fine. you shouldn't listen for more than 1-2 hours at a time though.
