She needs to get off her ass and get a new album out by end 17 early 18 and if it is AA tier or above she can get in the top 10. I really don't think anyone comes close, even Beyonce loves her, but she's gotta get a mainstream hit or at the very least an advertising earwig that makes people go 'oh I love that, what is it'.

I really love Grimes but she gotta' break through.

This is Billboards top 10, which I disagree with but it's not really far off.
10. Kendrick Lammar
09. Arcade Fire
08. Katy Perry
07. Lady Gaga
06. Nicki Minaj

The moment I realized she writes/performs all of her own music. And when I noticed that an increasing number of major industry players (like Elton John, Lady Gaga and most recently Lorde) have started taking career cues from her.

such a bland top (billboard top 10). in terms of popularity, those artists are the "best" of the decade. but the real best artist is grimes, imo.

Forgot to mention David Albarn (and I'm sure I'm forgetting about a whole host of other bigger name artists as well.)

And notice how nearly every major pop PERFORMER to release a new album over the past couple of years has suddenly become a behind-the-scenes co-writer/co-producer/co-etc. wunderkind of some sort (at least, if people's liner notes are to be believed...)

It used to be that just small ensemble groups (eg. rock bands) were looked down upon if they weren't heavily involved in the writing/production process going on behind their music. Solo performers/popstars were pretty much off the hook in that regard. As things currently stand, the best that Beyonce surrogate-types can do to defend against criticism is write passive-aggressive articles about people like Grimes being literal freaks of nature:
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/apr/28/beyonce-lemonade-lesson-collaboration-robert-plant-karen-o-kendrick-lamarr-jack-white-mnek

Imo in a couple of decades from now, when people look back on today there's probably going to be a very marked difference in the contemporary music world (more so business-model-wise than music-style-wise) between the pre-Grimes and post-Grimes era.

I think it's shit that this isn't exposed to a bigger audience. If anyone is obviously battling the "music industry" that everyone seems to hate so much, it's her.
If she was the "pawn" they say she is. A song like this would have well over a million views by now. It doesn't. So that tells me a different story.

WPP2 is great live in glastonbury album when she chokes on her saliva or something.
>>
>>71385258
Her music has a lot to offer. Grimes is discussed do much because she's really consistent. She doesn't have a couple of great songs and a lot of filler, but great songs after great songs.

Some of her older music may take you a while to get into it, but it will be very rewarding.

Also see this >>71385286
>>
>>71385324
She apologized even before the song started. She barely performed the song live at that time. Tbch WP2 is hard to sing because of the required high voice.
>>
>>71385426
I am not complaining that part always cracks me up and at time I listened it more than album version. I just recommend it to check on default. Other songs on glastonbury are not interesting.

Flesh without blood on BBC is also nice, so Is Oblivion on FYF if I am not mistaken.

Joanna Newsom is a big Grimes fan.

>Interviewer: What young artists do you feel an affinity with? I heard you're a Kendrick fan.
>Joanna Newsom: I loved the latest Bjork album, I'm excited about the idea of Grimes. I haven't wrapped my head around the record. I find her so compelling and so unlike anybody else and so incredibly talented, skilled, and fun. I love her. I met her in LA a few months ago, she told me something along the lines of, "I grew up listening to your music". I will say, it made me feel really old for about five minutes, then it made me feel really happy. I was like well, I guess I'm old now, but that's okay because this awesome and amazing young musician likes my music and said that it was special to her when she was younger, so that's great.
https://i-d.vice.com/en_au/article/life-after-whimsy-joanna-newsom-is-no-ethereal-creature

>I’m super excited that Grimes is getting so much attention for her amazing production too because she’s super, super talented. And she does everything! She produces completely on her own.
http://www.spin.com/2015/11/joanna-newsom-divers-interview/

>In terms of people today, as I said, I’m a little out of the loop, but I have noticed I’m really excited by the way that Grimes frames herself, and seems utterly disinterested in her own beauty, which is really exciting to me. Sometimes it’s useful for an idea, and then other times it’s not useful for an idea, and she seems unaffected either way. I like her music as well, and I like what she says.

and if you're counting that quick jump to V that she makes every other 4th beat, that's just silly. it's only a transitional note. it doesn't change the progression at all
>>
>>71391680
okay. it just came off as condescending. my main instrument is bass but i play guitar too
>>
>>71391680
So, what is the actual chord progression?
>>
>>71391706
>>71391732
First of all It is a I chord, and it is MOST CERTAINLY a fundamental part of the song's chord progression (in this case literally since it contains the song's fundamental note - Eb.)

>my main instrument is bass
The versus and chorus of this song are built from an 8-bar chord progression, which in functional harmony terms goes like this:

|IV------|vi------|V------|--------|IV------|vi------|V------|I--V----|

Which, given that it is in Eb Major translates to:

|AbM | Cm | BbM | | AbM | Cm | BbM | EbM BbM |

Throw in the root inversions and you get:

|AbM | Cm | BbM | | AbM | Cm | BbM | EbM BbM/D |

Better now?
>>
>>71392048

i re-read that article where grimes lists off 5 albums that changed her life and decided to listen to person pitch

imagining dark age grimes walking around late spring montreal listening to this opening and tripping out is making me very comfy and mildly wistful.

oh to have seen the world through her eyes from when she started making her "atonal drone" music for her mcgill class to making geidi primes... its fascinating because i think it would unlock a lot of mysteries about budding hidden virtuosos. at the same time its stupidly obsessive and i want to fucking die.
>>
>>71394310
I know. Fun, isn't it? I successfully managed to avoid listening to a single complete album of anything even close to resembling contemporary pop music (purposefully, since imo roughly 95% of all music made in any given time period is trash) up until my own accidental discovery of Grimes last March. Since then I have started actively listening/paying attention to all the new pop releases - for the soul purpose of getting a better understanding of what Grimes is up against and why she is doing what she is doing. Because it really is THAT interesting.

>imagining dark age grimes walking around late spring montreal

>We talk about her increasingly complex arrangements and then classical composers, and the conversation disintegrates into a lot of “that sounds good; I should check that out,” before she pauses and recounts the following adventure:
>“One of the most intense experiences of my life was when, do you know Arvo Pärt? I did acid and I put on his album and I climbed the mountain [Montreal’s central Mount Royal] and it was in like, four feet of snow, and it was the most glorious life-changing experience of my life. I climbed straight up, and I hurt myself; I was covered in blood when I came down. I was soaking wet and covered in blood and people were just staring at me but it was like…cause I was climbing on the rocks, cause I just climbed straight up and I was falling and it was cold so I couldn’t feel it, so I was like cutting myself on everything.”
>Again there’s the mix of not finding the words and repeating “I was covered in blood” – that clash, half-escaped to someplace more pleasant but ultimately forever right here. As if the most free you can feel is numb to the shock of parkgoers on quaint winter strolls staring at your heart spilling out onto the snow.
http://www.dummymag.com/new-music/grimes-interview-so-many-worlds

Because it implies that there is a 'regressive' counterpart set of things to go along with it. Which definitively isn't the case in things like art, since everything about art itself is inherently subjective, and variety is the spice of life.

Apparently you didn't get the memo that mentions that ART IS SUBJECTIVE. If you say her music is mediocre, fine, but don't pretend it's mediocre for anyone else. Maybe it's just not for you.

>Me and im sure other anons could go on for days
You could and many actually tried. I didn't see even one decent argument why people like you believe she's bad/mediocre. I also didn't see a real list of similar songs/artists to her. e.g. name a similar song to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oqxz6hpGbs

People wondered that even in 2012. Why the hype?

>To get attention like Grimes, there are some requirements: great unique music, beautiful quirky look, nice personality, tons of pictures available (we're on an image board) and an interesting life story (something to talk about when the music discussion stalls). Also, very important: that artist must be relatable. e.g. Grimes likes video games and fantasy/sci-fi films/books.

That's just your opinion. Grouper is generally very dull, even duller than FKA Twigs. Why do you pretend that Grouper is better than Grimes if she's unable to come with ONE decent song? Not even one decent hook.

Because clarence is technically superior but a bit more harsh than grimes so idk going off of that
and if you appreciate music and not just pop you can reconize the talent and give it a chance

maybe its their close mindness in general

>>
>>71402600
>technically superior

>and if you appreciate music and not just pop you can reconize the talent and give it a chance
Every individual has their own taste. It's ridiculous to stereotype an entire fanbase when every person has their own damn taste.
>maybe its their close mindness in general
Maybe they just don't like that particular music. Maybe the voice is annoying, maybe it's not catchy enough, whatever. In a word: subjectivity.
>>
>>71402667
actually its plenty catchy and you could even compare the two music and its what grimes is trying to acheive but she's not talented enough for it

It's barely catchy. Grimes is 100x catchier.

feminisms are the most sexist things ever, sexism can't exist towards men? that's not fair. these are much safer times in history for women and this is how they act now...

even protective sexism on their side, a woman can just beat and mace a guy repeatedly and he can't offend people by protecting his own life, that's not sexism though that's just manners and totally ok
