What are the 5 best post-punk albums? Not the most popular or your favorite, the objective best. For me it's probably the most appealing genre but I haven't really scratched the surface.
Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box
Wire - Chairs Missing
Gang of Four - Entertainment!
The Cure - Porrnography
Bauhaus - In The Flat Field
I'm no thorough historian on post-punk or anything but based on what I've heard I'd probably say these, and at least a couple of them are probably duly justified in the grand scheme of things. At a minimum, I don't think anyone would knock me for listing Metal Box.
Fearful symmetry from Daniel Amos is amazing, it doesn't sound like post punk, but that's intentional, because all the concepts behind post punk are beyond the sound itself...
Rather ripped was amazing aswell, the sound is just too good.
And even if it's stupid to list something so obvious, unkown pleasures is just godly, just had to say it.
Disintegration from the Cure.
And I can't just say 5 albums so I'll leave it here, there's so many good post punk out there.
>complex, jazzy bits with funky/dub rhythms
The Pop Group - Y
>clashing multi guitar parts (sometimes even polyphonic) along with ambient/proto industrial synth parts
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance (or their singles before this album)
>each track starts off with a catchy hook before getting more dense and convoluted; almost like the equivalent of Bach in post-punk
Wire - 154
>the minimalism art music trend of the time entering post-punk along with dub-like grooves
Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box
>The epitome of emotional post-punk, done in a very cool medieval gothic style
The Cure - Disintegration

Lullaby was just breath-taking...

Rather Ripped? Like, the Sonic Youth album? Don't get me wrong, I think it's a solid album and very underrated but a post-punk essential? If we're gonna toss Sonic Youth's hat in wouldn't Evol or Sister be better candidates?

New age or old school?

Oh shit I've read something like you can post your personal favorites, I'm stupid. Then no, instead of rther ripped I would say Ocean Rain from Echo and the bunnymen.

Killing Joke - 1980 s/t
PiL - Flowers of Romance
The Chameleons - What Does Anything Mean? Basically
The Wolfgang Press - Bird Wood Cage
The Fall - Bend Sinister
Fuck these albums aren't what I thought post-punk was, what the fuck genre are albums like the idiot/ transformer?

That's art rock my man. Pop rock with cool little artsy bits like Transformer's arrangement (influenced by David Bowie's Hunky Dory) or The Idiot's electronic bits (influenced by David Bowie's Berlin trilogy.) None of the weird take on abrasive sounds and deconstructing pop structure stuff that we have been posting here.

Damn... I though art rock was just another term for prog? Guess I'll go look up some art rock, cheers fella.
>>71378270
>art rock
Meaningless term, just like 'indie rock' or 'alternative'
>>71378510
>>71378351
Nah not really. It's what the Beatles/Bowie/Lou Reed/Radiohead kind of music goes into. Straightforward rock music but with some sorta unique/grand or experimental arrangement of other sounds. Differs from progressive rock in that art rock still sticks towards sounding like a song meanwhile prog goes into all sorts of stuff like long as fuck tracks, large instrumental sections, etc.
>>71378558
You really have no idea what you're talking about huh? Listen to some more music before posting here.
>>71378576
elaborate, or else you're wrong
>>71378510
Alternative rock is not a meaningless term lol, have you ever heard REM?
>>71378585
>Beatles/Bowie/Lou Reed/Radiohead kind of music
They're nowhere near close enough to fall under the same subgenre, not to mention the fact that they have all made music that's so far apart, that not even their own music could fall under the same one.
>prog goes into all sorts of stuff
All sorts of different stuff is very insightful. 'Long as fuck tracks' is what defines prog rock the most? seriously man, read up on something or don't talk about it.
Art rock means nothing. If you can shovel anything and everything you think is superior to what you perceive is not 'straightforward' and get a certain feeling of validation out of that.

>Alternative rock is not a meaningless term
Oh really, what does it tell you about the music? That it's alternative, alternative to what? 'standard' rock? What even is 'standard' rock? And esactly how is it alternative? Just different? It really is an empty term.

>bend sinister
Have you considered getting taste?
