Sure, seven million teenagers could be wrong, but their success carries with it a certain documentary certainty. It does however prove that youth rebellion is toothless enough to simulate and market. But then whoever thought youth was dangerous in the current climate anyway? Would you prefer the band market patriotism instead? And are you really immune to "Living on a Prayer"? B-

I must say, I admire Jon-Jon's transparently pseudo-Springsteenian desire to improve both his artistic reputation and his platinum count at the same time. You could identify with the masses, sit back, and enjoy its giant hooks all the while. You could learn to love "Living on a Prayer" as I did on nonstop rotation at a community pool. Or you could lose your lunch. Now pass the barf bag this way. C+

I think I've finally found the secret to their success, almost as mysterious as Jon-Jon's mysteriously unwrinkled countenance--hard rock so inoffensive it's less Aerosmith than Air Supply. Honestly, Bon Jovi meant so little short or long term that I always assumed the group broke up in the fabled '90s, taking all their albums since then as reunions or one-shots, and I couldn't seem to figure out why the product kept coming in the five seconds I stopped to think about it. Nor is it possible to tell if the one called "Bells of Freedom" is pro or anti-Bush. It's impossible to say. A depressing proof for the existence of that fabled entity, the passive mass audience. C+
