Coming from a huge fan of shoegaze and ambient as well as psychedelic pop, also post punk etc
If I had to condense it down to 1 main issue I just think neil's songwriting at the time was really sub par. embarrassingly so. the songs are built mostly on the same obvious and flowery open/7th chords that youd think were cool maybe in your first year of playing guitar. The lyrics are so weak and the delivery is a little too trippy dippy, I believe he was actually stoned to get into character for this record.
I think souvlaki space station is a remarkable record, the stunning textural/melodic parts but it's abundantly clear that brian eno played a huge role in crafting that aspect of the album.
I thought I was crazy but Chris Ott also shit all over them in his video series for totally different reasons so I cant be the only one who redpilled slowdive a long time ago.
I grew out of Souvlaki and JFaD a while back, but you have to admit Pygmalion's great.

>Pygmalion
does it really count though? i mean as i understand its not even the whole band

It's essentially Rachel & Neil's songs with the rest of the band playing them, but in my eyes that makes it even more remarkable. As you said Neil's songwriting is sub-par at times, but he pulled through on Pygmalion. In my eyes, there are no bad tracks on it.
