It's the 2nd of October

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Beck - One Foot in the Grave
>Lo-fi Indie, Contemporary Folk, Singer/Songwriter
I've always been the type to question Beck's standing as a "folk" artist. His brand of genre-blending alt rock never struck me as particularly folk-y accept for an occasional harmonica.
This record solidifies his legitimacy as a folk artist for me. Anyone who opens an album with a more than decent cover of He's a Mighty Good Leader knows at least some shit about American folk music. And it's the folk & blues tracks on that I find myself appreciating the most on this record. His finger picking technique is solid, not perfect, but that doesn't really matter cause he plays with personality. I can hear a lot of John Hurt in his play style. Songs like Hollow Leg and I've Seen the Land Beyond make me long for an alternate reality where Beck became a country blues musician.
The rest of the album is a bit all over the place.
It's got the dry, sparse, lo-fi production style of a lot of early indie records I enjoy. The record is a little half-baked and scatterbrained however. It really does sound more like a collection of basement demos rather than fully fleshed out songs. Not to say there isn't a certain charm to that. There are a handful of memorable moments, like Asshole, which sounds like an Elliott Smith B-side. But a lot of this record feels unrealized in it's potential.

Woolite recs:

James Brown - Hot Pants (1971)
>funk

It's the Godfather, come on, it's bound to be good. The b-side isn't nearly as good as the a-side with a tendency to gravitate towards softer, less funky territory, but the a-side is mint and even bad James Brown is still decent. "Blues & Pants" is a wonder, a ten-minute long jam that never lets up, and "Can't Stand It" is a bit of a weirder entry in Brown's catalogue, but still a fucking corker of a tune in its own right. These tracks, plus an RYM review, really make me realize how close in style Brown's funk era was to Fela Kuti and so far removed from other American funk and soul artists. Long, repetitive jams with an emphasis on the groove and a complete eschewing of traditional hooks and songwriting. It's such a damn cool style, and the tracks on the b-side that stray from this approach suffer and lose the spark that makes Brown's music so special. All in all, still a very solid record.

3.0-

stick recs:

Tony Conrad - Slapping Pythagoras (1995)
>minimalism, drone

Conrad's first album since his foray's with La Monte Young and Faust in the '60s and '70s is a wonderful take on modern drone that never loses the very primitive approach to drone Conrad had when he was first starting out. It's violin-based drone, which is definitely a big early drone characteristic, and while the instrument often becomes overwhelmingly screechy and abrasive in the hands of Conrad (especially on the first track here), it adds a very homely, earthy layer to the walls of sound created here. O'Rourke's influence definitely adds a lot to the moderninity of the pieces here, and while the first track might be a bit too abrasive and screechy for my tastes, the massive sound of the record is great, as is the second track.

3.0

stick moves on!

Beck - One Foot in the Grave (1994)
>lo-fi indie, contemporary folk, acoustic rock, singer/songwriter

It's really cool that Beck was able to put out something like this after "Loser" skyrocketed him to popularity, but it's really not all that great of an album. Tuneless Beck has never settled with me well, he's got a lot of experimental ideas but he always executed them really poorly, and the noisy, ultra lo-fi folk tunes on here are no different. While these tracks take up about half the album, the more structured songs on here are quite nice. He does "He's A Mighty Good Leader" very well (I've gotta echo triangle, just imagine if Beck went down this country blues path, it'd be awesome), "Asshole" is a great tune, and the very Beat Happening-esque duet with Calvin Johnson on "I Get Lonesome" is great. Not a great album at all, but it's got some great tracks and a certain charm to it.

Ugly Casanova - Sharpen Your Teeth (2002)
>indie rock

The first album that really shows off Brock's interest in pop, and it hurts. It's definitely a transitional album between The Moon & Antarctica and Good News, with the spaceiness of the former and the crazy vocals of the latter, but taken on it's own it's a disappointing album at best. I've never liked Brock's Tom Waits-esque seadog vocals, the spacey elements fit poorly, and the whole thing just seems really overly poppy and not memorable at all. The alt-country/folk tracks are quite good, though, but they're often put to the side in order to give Brock's new sound a chance to shine. In many ways, this was the beginning of the end for Brock, but there are still some decent tracks here.

Genetics and Windsurfing - Streaming Audio Continuum
>Noise, Glitch, Vaporwave?, Instrumental Hip-hop

One of those deals where the melody and rhythm are so fuzzed and maxed out that they have to be ducked whenever the even-more-fuzzed bass rolls through. It can be a trippy effect when executed correctly, and it’s executed well enough here. The songs have a tendency to settle into hip-hop-like swaggering grooves. With a little more bite and internal consistency (a bunch of songs will shift to a different beat mid-track instead of returning to the original theme), I could see XXXtentacion rapping over a few of these beats. I also enjoyed the glitchy aspect of these.

“No Geometry Nature” in particular had some fun voices “bop”ing a bunch and the glitchy noise, chiptune flashes (what could be a one second sample of the first notes of the Sonic theme actually), and fuzzed out musique concrète that really bring it to another level (pun kind of intended). Actually, “No Geometry Nature” is kind of emblematic of the album as a whole, as all of these features crop up elsewhere in the album, with varying intensities. Although, “Isaac Newton” and “Prototype” do dive into more hard-hitting techno-based glitch work, with some promising results. “? BPM” is seemingly the conclusion to this glitchy techno style, and it’s almost footwork, tbf.

Interesting post-internet noise experiments here—some successful, some a bit lackluster.

Some cool sounds throughout, but overall no big enjoyable tracks. Very incohesive. Tries a little too hard to be experimental

2.5/5

>Jim O'Rourke - Bad Timing

I should just stop trying with american primitivism, I just don't get it or something. The droney parts were cool and the parts where there was more instrumentation then just him plucking at his guitar were also nice (the last half of Bad Timing wasn't focused on his guitar and I really liked it, the horns in Happy Trails were very very nice, the piano in 94 the Long Way made me smile).. but I just really don't like that twang-y guitar sound by itself. Fortunately, these great moments were long enough to make this thing overall enjoyable. I was worried after listening to 5 minutes of straight guitar in the first track that this would be the what the whole album was like, but thankfully it wasn't; I really didn't want to give this a 2/5 or something.

Wow, fucking two-parter for a 7 minute release, wth

Various Artists - Hiroshima Field Recordings
>Speeches, Interviews, Field Recordings

I have a complicated relationship with things like this. Things like this artistic object, which really engage audiences and force questions about art. I love it because it’s cool that people can discuss this, but I hate it because those pieces, the readymades, the Buyers Markets, the performance art acts—really feel like “””lazy””” art.

Hiroshima Field Recordings is a 7-minute, 7 track release by the illusory American Institute of Sonorical Research containing, in this order: a one minute speech by Harry Truman on retaliating against Japan with atomic bombs, one minute of civil defense siren, the sound of the planes dropping the bomb for forty three seconds, one minute and twenty four seconds of the bomb detonating (which is silent for a minute before what sounds like a gunshot goes off followed by low wind rumbling), perhaps a recording of the sea for thirty seconds, one minute and thirty five seconds of providing an overview of the “atomic bomb project”, then a minute-long interview of a Japanese survivor.

>cont.
>>
>cont.

Now, this is a rather clinical overview of this little document. Deconstructed, it seems kind of pathetic. And it is. In that way, it's awfully cheap. However, like all discussion-provoking artistic objects, it does have an element of aesthetic taste involved, and some decent emotional impact. The way the clips all cut short is really curiously effective, especially how the thundering of aircraft on “Drop” is cut off by the silence of “Detonation”, a recording of the bomb from the ground (you can hear the rustling of the grass and chirping of crickets before it hits). It also beautifully juxtaposes the “Interview (with the Enola Gay Crew”—where an officer is talking about the tremendous achievement and all the credit that is due to the US and US scientists and military—with a “Speech (by a Japanese Survivor)” pleading for the bomb to never be used again.

But is it in good taste? Is it “lazy” art? The 7-minute length, bandcamp release, and apparently imaginary American Institute of Sonorical Research really beg those questions.

I think I’d really appreciate something like this if it were a little longer, but I’m glad I listened to it. In my opinion, it boils down such a huge event, such an impassively massive karmic whirlwind, into too small a monument. But arguments could also be made that brevity is important—too large an artistic statement might carry too much of the artist’s ego? I dunno. I could argue back and forth with myself on this for hours.

I’m tentatively going with a 7. I gave the same to that Cat Chamber Demo release for the same reasons: because I enjoy the release, and more importantly, I enjoy the discussion it begets.

>Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
Dunno if I'm in a bad mood for listening to music the last couple days but I'm disappointed by Unwound. I don't understand why this album is so hyped up out of all post-hardcore albums. It might be a weird comparison to make but it reminds me of what I dislike about Slowdive, sure the music is good and it does have an 'atmosphere' but it's all so sterile, I don't feel it at all. The slightly dreamy production from Phil Ek works for Built To Spill but not here. Because of this the Slint comparisons seem a bit off, there's just not the same use of dynamics that make for an engaging listen. It feels flat. Still decent tho. 3/5 Steve Albini should have produced.

Transcore recs:

Cardiacs - A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window (1988)
>progressive rock, art punk, zolo

Not as ambitious as Sing to God, but altogether more enjoyable and much less spotty. This is a prog album that completely eschews every prog tradition. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, it's drowning in punk and pop influences, and most of its tracks are short and concise. The concise nature of most of these tracks does make for some throwaway tracks, but it also makes sure that most of the tracks are fresh and enjoyable so the album as a whole never gets stale. Very loud, off-the-wall, spastic albums like this generally aren't my forte, but Cardiacs balance their humor and their generally random nature with some damn good songwriting, both from a prog and a pop perspective. Their prog is swirling, complex, and dynamic, while their pop is catchy as hell and ultra-goofy. The pop gets a bit too goofy on occasion, but the prog is always great, and the punk influence is a wonderful touch. I feel like I've been saying this a lot lately, but this is one fucking fun album.

Gato - The Third World (1970)
>avant-garde jazz

Latin tinged avant-jazz, really cool stuff. Falls a bit into typical avant-garde jazz territory and doesn't do much to differentiate itself from other albums in the genre when it deviates from it's prominent latin jazz influences, but the tracks that bring in this latin influence are so damn cool. The opening track especially, Barbieri's sax work is immaculate and the way the track builds up from a rather calm latin jazz track into a noisy, out of this world free jazz track is perfect. The other three tracks aren't as good, but they're still very solid in their own ways. Really good album.

Ay bois, random.org decided my first album for March was Joe Henderson's Inner Urge (1964).

This was kind of a weird album considering its context (recorded 9 days before A Love Supreme, featuring also members from Coltrane's band). The chaotic and frenetic vibes from the first three tracks felt very genuine and natural, Henderson's chemistry with the other instruments flows really well. The other two tracks, while good, felt like a sudden change of pace from the other ones, which distracted me a bit but it didn't feel cheap. Would relisten

Fav track: El Barrio

(And yeah I'm not using numerical scores because I suck at them).

Also, nice chart dude. That Billy Woods album is dope, as is the Kate Bush. Whew, this February backlog was great.

Ospipov State Russian Folk Orchestra - Balalaika Favorites
>Russian Folk Music

I know absolutely nothing about Russian music (or classical/folk music like) but this is kind of what I envisioned. Lots of strings, very dramatic atmosphere and cool little melodies. It doesn’t seem as overdone or layered as a lot of classical I’ve heard but it has a similar classic feel. I’m just generalizing classical music at this point but I enjoyed it.

3/5

Jam Baxter - The Gruesome Features
>Jazz Rap, Abstract Hip Hop

For a 70 minute hip-hop album, this is surprisingly cohesive. It’s consistently entertaining, with some pretty comfy jazz beats and some hints at more abstract raps. Tracks like “EFT”, “Q” and “Fine” are awesome tracks, “Eggs” actually made me laugh out loud and I’m pretty sure “Altitude Sickness” samples something off A New Perspective. It’s a nice mix and even when the tracks go a little more abstract, they aren’t weird for the sake of being weird. They’re nice little experiments and don’t scream “look at me being ABSTRACT” like a lot of songs/albums in this style.

Anyway, this is pretty cohesive and surprisingly entertaining. I keep thinking I’ll get burnt out on hip-hop and I find something like this that reminds me why I like jazz rap so much.

Scott Walker - Tilt
>Baroque Pop, Dark Ambient

RYM gave this about 8 or 9 genre labels so I wasn’t sure what to expect out of this. I thought Scott 3 was so cheesy on a revisit and 4 was solid so I was hoping for something better in Tilt. He supposedly reinvented himself, randomly coming out with this one in ‘95.

I’ve been so accustomed to upbeat, positive music lately, with all the reggae/funk and this kind of took me by surprise. There’s a lot of that post-industrial influence on here, which I haven’t heard a lot of. There’s hammering drums and noisy distortiony passages on “The Cockfighter”. “Bouncer See Bouncer” is slow and minimalist in an almost Sucide kind of style. The whole album feels so bleak and hopeless - there doesn’t seem to be any positivity in it. On a lot of darker folk albums, you get a lot of the same vibes but there’s at least this sense of relatability or sadness. This lacks that and instead feels completely unattached and eerie.

Something I wouldn’t have listened to if it weren’t for RYM and I’m really glad I gave it a listen. One of the most unique albums I’ve heard lately. Honestly, I’m kind of exhausted after hearing this, it was a pretty heavy listen.

I listened to this like three times and I'm still not entirely sure what I think of it! I got bad at this! I'd give it one more listen, but then it wouldn't be the first anymore. Proggy stuff with the singer from This Heat singing on the last track and playing drums, brings his kazoo fetish from Triumph to the third track. Eno's on here as well, somewhere. Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963)
>contemporary folk, singer/songwriter

I hyped myself up a bit too much with the first couple tracks. The first four or so tracks are some of Dylan's best, blending masterful, angry political songs with delicate love songs incredibly. I alredy loved the version of "Girl From the North Country" on Nashville Skyline, but the version here is even better, and probably my favorite Dylan song overall. The rest of the album is much spottier. The love songs get a lot cheesier and goofier, and the political songs get more stale and less provocative. There's not a bad moment here, except when Dylan gets weird and goofy with his vocals, but there's a very significant drop in quality after the first four or so tracks, barring "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right". Still, a good album.

2.5+

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right was one of the first fingerpicking songs I ever learned, which is hilarious considering the complexity for a beginner. I pretty much willed myself to learn it, and I think it's permanently engrained in my head now.

Just moved from a prosperous, up-and-coming West Coast city to Milwaukee. Have been depressed by the segregation and economic stagnation here, as well as what seems to be a largely unfounded Midwestern optimism (largely from white folks) toward the city's future. Have been intrigued by Milwaukee native Al Jarreau's song 'Milwaukee' from the album 'Glow' and his description of leaving Milwaukee for LA in spite of people telling him to "stick around, just to see it crumble to the ground." Is this song representative of 'Glow' as an album, and is 'Glow' representative of the rest of his work? What other albums of his should I listen to?

2. What are some of the key features and characteristics of A Love Supreme (1964)?

3. How was the 2nd Miles Davis Quintet (1964-68) different from his 1st quintet? (1955-58)

My grandparents live in a small upstate NY town, and I've been hearing for years—yeeaars—how [company] is building a plant nearby and it's going to "do great for the area". With scant evidence. And the town's been going downhill since water mills became obsolete and manufacturing moved away for good. >Sleep Has His House
Goddamn is the organ used effectively here. I initially thought that it was because my man tibet was dropping some serious chord progressions. Turns out, the thing still sounds fresh even if it drones on a single chord for nearly half an hour. I kind of wished he sung on more tracks, as the occult chanting can get a bit schmaltzy. As you can tell though, this was a minor gripe.

>Giles Corey
Part of what made Deathconsciousness so gripping was it's fantastic production which wore it's influence on it's sleeve, but was still unique. Barrett brings his songwriting chops here as well, but it doesn't work as well with a cliched, reverb-heavy slowcore sound.

>Forget
Stewart focuses too much on the shock factor here. The synth palette is awful, the songwriting leaves much to be desired, and the production is trashy. Worse yet, that seems to be the point.

>A Mirrors single
Fuck me. It should be a crime for 70's proto-punk singles to have a standard pop rock ditty on one side, only to have pure psychedelic paranoia on the other. I'm still in shock.

>Electric Heat
To be honest with you, I have forgotten how the other two songs sound. The first song was so -electrifying- that I was still trying to recover myself when the next two songs played.

>Nazi Punks Fuck Off
It's nothing special, but it's angry I guess.

>The Painters
It's a shame this ended up so low, I felt a little bit of a groove going on with Peacemaker.

Why can't we have more songs like Lying In The Grass? Am I the only one here who thinks that song is phenomenal?

>Some weird german shit.
Aleatoric and borderline nonsensical. However, there is still a sense of urgency and paranoia to be found in the mess.

>Hospice
This isn't that bad. I was half expecting every song to be a flop, but there are some genuinely effective moments here. The reason why alot of dallyers hate this album is because it's the most un-assuming you could get with this type of music. I'm out of characters.

Shaq - Shaq Diesel
>Boom Bap, East Coast Hip-Hop

The Big Aristotle. The Big Baryshnikov. The Real Deal. Shaquille O’Neal has always been a man of many nicknames, all of them more hysterical than the next. For the title of his debut, Shaq decides to stick with a classic - Diesel. It’s one of the first athlete/musician crossovers (afaict) and all things considered, it’s actually pretty enjoyable. He’s always had a fragile ego and this is kind of his first attempt to jump into the spotlight.

Riding off his absurd rookie year in Orlando and rising celebrity status, Shaq gets a ridiculous production lineup. It’s pretty much the best money can buy - Erick Sermon, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (of ATCQ) and a number of Def Jam producers. As a result, the production is actually really solid, with classic Native Tounges-esque boom bap beats. They’re nice and mellow and there aren’t any duds on this side. The album kicks off with a cool little instrumental that meshes Shaq quotes with NBA commentary and that’s when you can tell that this is a professionally produced album.

As a rapper… Shaq is actually kinda solid. It’s obvious that it isn’t his day job but he holds his own. I’ve never heard an athlete blow me away with their raps but this is probably as close as it gets. He has moments where his flow is tight and refined - but for the most part, he’s corny as shit. What else would you expect? There’s a few moments where I had to pause it because I was laughing too hard. And “Where Ya At?” is actually a great song,w/ Shaq trading the corniest punchlines possible w/ Phife Dawg.

I guess about half the reason I like this album so much is because I really like Shaq. And I was expecting something terrible. But it’s more than solid imo.

Plus, if you want to hear Shaq chant a chorus of “By the hairs of my chinny chin chin” - this is definitely the album for you.

Yeah I figured I was probably overthinking it. I was gonna talk about the poem but also how he runs through all the octaves on the little riff on "Acknowledgement" (I think?). It's like he's trying all the possible combinations and it feels really spiritual. Anyway...

Figured you'd be pushing me to listen to Uncle Meat lol, I'll get on that soon. I tried to add some /daily/core albums and ended up accidentally doing a mini Fish drone with Zappa, Pale Cocoon, Flipper and the Ornette.

Yeah I really like this class. Though, it seems plenty people just took it cuz they thought it was gonna be easy (there's like 100 people in this class) and then realized it was gonna be an actual class.

would be interested in hearing why this album is supposed to be significant. Seems like a pretty late Bossa Nova/Samba album and I didn't really care for it.
>>
>>71337299
It was extremely successful, and pretty much introduced the rest of the world to that kind of music which received pretty much zero radio play in rest of the world. The Girl From Ipanema was extremely popular. It was also the first and only jazz album to win a grammy until Herbie Hancock's "River: The Joni Letters" in the year TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHT!

Dislike it all you want but it's undeniably influential.

It's technically thursday, might as well get this out of the way.

Clifton Chenier - Bogalusa Boogie (1976)
>Zydeco, Swamp Blues
I very strongly feel most people, even I if we went back a year or so, would dislike this album because of how corny and vapid it looks at first glance. And I won't deny, it is pretty corny. But, that doesn't hold it back from being a rip roarin' good time. I listened to this album and it felt like just the kind of happy-go-lucky, party-down music I needed at the moment. The modern world often feels too bogged down in cynicism and despair. Especially in these stress inducing past few months, the cajun washboard rhythms managed to get my toes tappin and my heart lifted, if just for a brief moment.
It's a fun record no doubt, it's a simple, authentic, down-home, party palooza record. That also doesn't mean it don't come with it's fair share of faults.
One, the production is a little too stale, too manufactured, it manages to suck some of the energy out of the record. I would've liked a dirtier, rawer sound. Two, while the fast paced dance numbers were getting me groovin', a lot of the mid-tempo blues tracks were all too repetitive for me.
Still, liked this record more than I would've suspected initially. And for a blues purist such as myself, I actually enjoyed the accordion and saxophone.

>Jandek – Brussels Saturday

What a joyful album cover! I think it captures the manic feeling of the Jandek live performance quiet well. All blurry and everyone going insane. Having tons of fun as well!

It starts off with a female vocalist, what sounds like our Representative of Corwood on the bass guitar and someone else on the drums and piano. Later on Rep switches to guitar. Instrumentally, it is a rather coherent improv even with Rep’s guitar playing.

Anyway, the opener sounds similar to what happened with the slower tracks of the Seattle show. Fairly mellow composition, very slow but menacing. It lasts for only 8 minutes before A 36 MINUTE LIVE TRACK emerges. Usually we have long live compositions cut up in bits and pieces, but here it is a non-stop performance for half an hour. The track itself is about Rep, his mobile phone and his loved one. A spoken word performance from the Rep is broken down by his occasional string chops in between the spoken parts. The cell phone theme appears once again on Maybe You’ve Died with something I can relate to. Personally, if I text someone I’d like to receive an answer ASAP cause otherwise I go into panic mode. There is also a very raunchy “Phantom Touches” that seems to be a sensual encounter amidst the dancefloor that ends up with a talk about the weather. Funny.

Good album. Fun stuff. I liked the female vocalist. Some of the lyrics as well.

7/10
