Well they know that Wintersun will literally leave them as soon as they fullfil the contractual obligations. They have the exclusivity on physical release of the album but who gives a shit about that to be honest, especially with a fuggly cover like that.

Overall this is good for the industry because it will set standards and put ideas into people's heads, but at the same time it is bad for the music consumers because it will breed the cancer that is entitlement.

Alright, I'll be honest. Part of the reason I hate this is because I despise Jari Maenpaa. I hate him for maintaining a loyal fanbase despite having no work ethic and being, by all measures, an absolutely atrocious producer. The fact that he's respected as being a good producer, one who can get away with just hilarious delays, despite releasing overproduced plastic garbage like this and Time I, is sickening. Even more so is his recent escapades, where he's begging people for money so he can build a fucking house and sauna large enough for his band to record Time II in for several months. Like, what the fuck? I wouldn't take that bullshit from Lost Fucking Horizon if that's what they wanted to record a third album.

I guess people like this band because they don't know any better. Because seriously, this shit is awful. Some of the wintery synth leads are OK but the melodies all blend together, the vocals are atrocious (both clean and harsh), tracks are WAY TOO LONG for how few ideas they have, there's some serious production errors at times even by the ears of someone who's no audio technician... this is a colossal joke and I lose respect for metal listeners as a whole when they laud bullshit like this. If I want wintery power metal I'll listen to Balflare, if I want power/melodeath I'll head for Crimson Shadows. Toss this in the garbage, there's so much better stuff out there. I mean, Ne Obliviscaris and Xanthochroid sound nothing like Wintersun, but they do bombastic orchestrated prog extreme metal about a million times better.

Look, I like cheese as much as the next nerd, I just don't see why I'd listen to this samey, synthetic pile of tripe instead of Bal-Sagoth, Xanthochroid or Blind Guardian. I remember Starchild being the raddest shit when I was 10, but this... yeah, it doesn't really hold up. Not much regard for pacing (what the fuck is up with the tracks being ordered from shortest to longest? It makes it drag even more than it ought to) or diversity (every guitar bit sounds like a remix of the opening riff of Starchild). On top of that, you have some honestly laughable vocals, both harsh and clean, and some really retarded production bloopers (what the heck is that bit at the start of Beautiful Death?) that make this whole shebang seem even more tacky and poorly-constructed.

Once in a while, like in the outro of Beautiful Death, I actually enjoy this, but those moments are the exception. Not seeing the appeal of this band.

When asked about how he feels about DragonForce, the average metalhead will usually say something along the lines of:

"LOLOLOLOLOL STUDIOFORCE SUX BRO."

However, when asked about how he feels about Wintersun, the metalhead will go on for ages - saying:

"MAAAAAAN! WINTERSUN'S AWESOME MAN AND JARI'S A BEST AND OH WOW THE GUITARS AND MAAAAAAAAN IT'S JUST SO EPIC! DID YOU KNOW THEY HAVE LIKE NORDIC THEMES AND STUFF? THE VOCALS ARE SO GOOD AND MAAN."

However, if you ask me, I really can't tell the damn difference between the former and the latter. Maybe said metalhead is endowed with some gifted insight that Mr. MR over here severely lacks, but when they're boiled down - they're just the same to me. Tasteless riffage that just goes on and on without crafting any atmosphere; bombastic, "symphonic" synthesizer nonsense; and the ridiculous, overpowered drumming that always manages to make me burst uncontrollably in a fit of laughter. You can't help but laugh when you start up "Winter Madness." Can you?

The worst or perhaps the best. It's so fucking funny part is that the band was probably aiming for the complete obvious, based on the epic themes the band tries to enact. Jari just roars about the damn weather, and wherein other metalheads are having whiplashes like they heard Anaal Nathrakh for the first time, I'm dying of laughter.

Conversely, this record does have some astounding replay value. Well, at least for me. What? Name ONE OTHER gimmicky, ultra-virgin band that embraces novelty with this level of finesse. Dream Theater doesn't hold a fucking candle.

Most Overrated Album of All Time: Winter Edition
My main problems with the Wintersun debut:

1. Jari's clean vocals are decent at best. His growl is pretty cool, but those cleans NEED SOME WORK.
2. This album needs to calm its ass down. I'm especially looking at the drums here, which are constantly going FFUFUFFFUFUFUFFFFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFFFUFUFUFUF instead of a tame FU FU FU FUFUFUFU FU FUFUFUFUFU FU FU FUFU FU FU FUFUFUFU.
3. The guitar isn't much better. Instead of the constant CHINGCHINGCHANGCHINGCHINGCHONGCHINGCHINGCHINGCHANGCHICHIHEFEAEPFPEEPCHING, there needs to be more CHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAEEEENG CHAAAAAAAANG CHICHICHICHICHI CHIC CHI CHAA CHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINGAAAAAAAANG. "Death and the Healing" succeeds at this.
4. The mixing could be better. At parts where the guitar is doing cool stuff, it's buried under the FUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFFUFUFUF drums, the WINGWINGWINGWANG keyboards, and the overall mediocre rhythm.

Come on, guys. Winter is the season for melancholy and doom. Summer is the season for hyperactive crackwhores. Everybody knows this! Mäenpää must have season disorientation or something. It's like he went to the southern hemisphere when writing a lot of this album, and his mind was telling him, "It's December, so it must be cold and dirgey!" But then he looked around and saw the sun and felt the heat of summer and was like, "YEAH! LET'S KICK THIS SHIT INTO OVERDRIVE!" And then we have Wintersun.

Probably my favourite album of all time. The word "epic" had no meaning until this album was released. Jari Mäenpää, the brain behind Wintersun, showcases epic speed, epic heaviness, epic beauty, epic atmosphere, epic chants, epic screams here — all degrees of epicness are encompassed in one cohesive album.

Jari is one of my favourite guitar heroes; his fast sweep solos are mindblowing, occasionally showcasing a neoclassical shred style similar to Yngwie Malmsteen or Michael Romeo (of Symphony X). His singing, chanting, growling and screaming are very emotional and uplifting even when the theme of the song is dark. His orchestral keyboard arrangements provide deep atmosphere and beautiful lead melodies. Kai Hahto keeps the pace high on drums, with great fills and varied rhythms.

We're all waiting for Time to surpass this masterpiece. (Will it earn seven stars?)

Probably my favourite album of all time. The word "ebin" had no meaning until this album was released. Jari Göndolää, the brain behind Wintersun, showcases ebin speed, ebin heaviness, ebin beauty, ebin atmosphere, ebin chants, ebin screams here — all degrees of ebiness are encompassed in one cohesive albume.

Jari is one of my favourite guitar heroes; his fast sweep solos are mindblowing, occasionally showcasing a neoclassical shred style similar to Yngwie Malmsteen or Michael Romeo (of Symphony XDDDD). His singing, chanting, growling and screaming are very emotional and uplifting even when the theme of the song is dark. His orchestral keyboard arrangements provide deep atmosphere and beautiful lead melodies. Kai Spurdo keeps the pace high on drums, with great fills and varied rhythms.

We're all waiting for Time to surpass this masterpiece. (Will it earn seven stars?)
