No.
>>
>>71323347
Dude, don't forget you are on /mu/.
Besides, it's a pretty hard task tbf. You want to make him hear some of your favorites, but at the same that to let him have a pretty broad view of what happened during all that time.
He would need also every Top 40 #1 hits from every 5 years since 1965, and some excerpts of the most popular of subgenres of jazz, rock, metal, electronic music, and also minimalism, serialism, African/Asian/South American music...
I just hope he would just learn to use the internet and go to rym to learn more about all this stuff after we part ways.

>>71323560
Kraftwoke
>>
voilà
>>
>>71323568
I wouldn't show him minimalism or serialism because they haven't had a big impact on popular culture but by showing them one album per large genre and then leaving them with the resources to look at more, you'd do a pretty good job

The Carter 2

5 classical records which were composed long before they were born. That would be interesting to see.

Revolver

No point in playing him songs

I legitimately think you all have brain damage.

Warning: this is going to be pretty much entirely America-centric. Not meaning American artists, but rather what has defined America musically. To really give him the best idea if what has been happening, we have to introduce him to the most significant forms of music since the popularization of the commercial record.

Albums:
> Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (jazz delegate)
> The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper (rock delegate)
> Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (electronic delegate)
> Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen (folk delegate)
> Nas - Illmatic (hip-hop delegate)

I considered leaving hip-hop out as it's technically in the electronic umbrella but I think it's been very culturally significant over the last 35 years and will probably be seen as it's own thing in a couple decades.

Songs:
> Louis Armstrong - West End Blues (1920s delegate)
> Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow (1930s delegate)
> Bing Crosby - White Christmas (1940s delegate)
> Elvis Presley - Hound Dog (1950s delegate)
> The Beatles - I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1960s delegate)
> ABBA - Dancing Queen (1970s delegate)
> Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (1980s delegate)
> Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (1990s delegate)
> Gnarles Barkley - Crazy (2000s delegate)
> TBD, but I'd say Drake - Hotline Bling (2010s delegate)

The singles are a great opportunity to show significant songs that represented popular culture across the century he missed.

We warranted that Steve Reich and Webern/Stockhausen weren't popular enough to deserve a spot on that restricted list of stuff, but yeah, if I would have a guy from 1917 that was cryogenically frozen for an afternoon and all I have to do is to introduce him to some music he has never heard before, I hope he is a curious kind of guy.
>>
>>71325931
>>71326124
You could replace Illmatic with Music for 18 Musicians. I was pretty torn on that.
>>
Id just give him all the Deftones albums
>>
All these people listing pop albums from the last 40 years thinking that even scratches the surface of a century of musical ideas
>>
>>71326425
you couldn't even name ten significant ideas by your own definition
>>
>>71326449
I wasn't attempting to. I was just pointing out how pointless it is to try to condense such a vast period of time into 5 album
>>
>>71326475
at least they tried. demeaning pop music as if it isn't the most representative music of the current culture isn't exactly helping your case. in that sense its the ONLY significant music of the century
>>
>>71325931
I wouldn't say Gnarles Barkley - Crazy is a good representation of how the 2000s were actually like, it being a part of a revival movement of soul. I'd use LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends instead.

And Kanye West - Runaway or M83 - Midnight City for the 2010s.
>>
>>71326354
Then he'd think everyone was Mexican and sang off key/screamed all the time
>>
>>71326597
good, good
