Compressors are pretty much redundant when used with any kind of distortion or fuzz. IMO they're only useful for fattening up and evening out clean sounds (and I play clean or nearly clean all the time and leave my compressor on 100% of the time). What compressor are you using?

Yamaha 611VFM is much more versatile than any Mex strat.

>Yammy is cheaper, more versatile with more or less same build quality
>But MIM is a proper strat

If you want that strat sound and feel, than go with the Mex, they're great. The Yammy has name brand duncans in the form of a beautiful SP90-1n soapbar and a Custom 5 TB-14. You dont really see any humbucker/P90 combos, so for me that's an obvious choice.

People say yammys have no souls and just halfway cover everything well, but never do anything great. Absolutely fucking nonsense if ever I've heard it.

>>71320212
Would a hollowbody (not semihollow) with no f-holes give less feedback, and have a richer sound than a semihollow?
>>
>>71320116
Yamaha has factories all over the place just about, Japan, USA, Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan. Obviously the higher end and signature stuff is USA/Japan. Specially the 611VFM series would be Korea/Taiwan/Indonesia. I have also heard that Yamaha has Chinese factories for the low end budget stuff.

I really don't care where stuff is made because it all depends on the factory's production processes and post-production inspection and quality control. I've played some absolutely awesome Epiphones but also some absolutely awful cheap ass Chibsons. Just the same my Indonesian made ESP LTD played better than the 3 Les Paul fadeds I played from the 2016 batch. So country of manufacture doesn't mean anything to me.

I still think it's funny though that a Korean/Taiwan/Indo factory can make a high end instrument with high end name brand hardware for a reasonable amount, yet chinese labor houses owned by large conglomerate brands can't. I wonder what the connection is there...
>>
>>71320238
More often than not you will find lower end models from factories people usually hold in high regard to be of poorer quality than higher end models from cheaper eastern factories.
>>

>>
Can you actually left a guitar body unfinished still keep it working?
>>
>>71320236
It would have less feedback than a hollowbody with f-holes but still more feedback than any semi-hollow. I prefer the sound of a true hollowbody but it is less versatile than a semi-hollow.

With strats, do you just feed the string through those holes in the back plate, up through the tone block and then out through the bridge? Or do you cut the string balls like a floyd rose and top load them?

The missing link between guitar and bass with authentic vintage-style and tons of low end.

Squier brings you the welcome return of a long-vanished Fender classic in the deeply satisfying form of the Vintage Modified Bass VI six-string bass that delivers excellent low end. Although it's called a six-string bass it has the feel of a baritone guitar without the extended neck. The strings aren't extra thick so it's a great transition from guitar. The original model of 1961-1975 has provided distinctively voiced low end for everyone from the Beatles to the Black Keys, Cream to the Cure, and many others.

listen to some youtube videos. or go try them out at the store. it's hard to describe, but with experience your hear will tell them apart. I'd just be wasting time describing it and somebody would just reply saying "no ur wrong"

>Will the p/j combo of the Quarter Pounder pickups sound different or the same as the j/j combo??

as far as I know, jazz and PJ basses are usually wired in a serial configuration, which means that J and PJ should output different tones if both pickups have their volume knobs anywhere above 0. they shouldn't sound differently on an individual basis.

another caveat of PJ basses is the hum. single coils produce hum. on J basses, the two single coils cancel each other out for some electrical reason I don't remember. on PJs, this benefit is lost, and the single coil will thus output noise, which can be pretty obnoxious depending on your gear/house/etc.
>>
>>71323251
Well you can just nigger rig a battery compartment without a dedicated preamp, that's fairly easy and doable. Most people with EMGs have some sort of fancy dual/tripple band preamp but most of those keep that shit flat and use amp's EQ anyway.

It really depends on what you are into. Check out Spector PJ basses, they come with EMGs, shitton of samples on youtube.

Absolutely nothing. Fifth string is an issue even on high-end Fenders. Often its wobbly, thin and stands out in terms of sounding compared to the rest of the strings. Especially if you are into a P pickup which is bassy as fuck on its own, its better to avoid it.

As far as EMGs go, they also make J and P pickups in humbucker housing if you are into more modern basses, FYI.

>>71323504
No but on a lot, I'd say 50/50. The issue is that the string will be too floppy or just straight out won't sound good. You can rectify it to a degree with thicker strings but then you also need to balance it on the entire set and sometimes it requires too much thickness. And even then it won't always help.

Basses that have 35" scale almost universally have a useful low B. Again, look up that stuff on talkbass, search the thread topics. Fender is the most notorious for that out of all the commercial brands. Ibanez soundgear series is also pretty up there with shitty low Bs.
>>
Any tips for hearing more definition of the pick attack? I don't really like how this all blends together.

I'd rather have it sound a little snappier. It sounds better to me when I'm playing it than when I'm listening back to it.

ESP is good quality plus a lot of them are 35" (normal scale is 34"). Jackson is slightly better in terms of build quality but I personally dislike the pointy looks myself.

Check out Ibanez BTB series. Young metalheads and 40-something single dads like it equally. Fifth strings on them are fantastic plus they have a bit flatter necks which is comfy as fuck.

Again, EMG makes also P and J pickups that come in soapbar housing.

ok help me out
I'm in the market for a multi effects pedal and I'm torn between the zoom G3n and the Boss me 25
they're both around the same price and do essentially the same thing but I find myself leaning a bit more towards the zoom as it's more user friendly and has more customisation options, but the boss has an expression pedal that can be used as a wah and dedicated recording software
now there is version of the g3n with an expression pedal that's a bit more expensive but it doesn't have wah so if I'd want that I'd have to fork over another 100$ for a decent wah

Expression pedals on digital multifx units are universally shit and after the novelty wears off you will find them absolutely unusable.
Boss is a decade outdated, get the zoom if you absolutely need to choose.

>this 34'' scale bass has a worse B string than this other 34'' bass
Care to elaborate? Both are 34'', if you use the same B string on both it will have the same tension on both and vibrate virtually in the same way.
Some pickups and cabinets have issues with the low B string, without a doubt, but one 34'' scale bass can't inherently have a tighter low B than another 34'' bass.
>>
>>71324072
It has nothing to do with tension, it has to do with how the bass itself/pickups/electronics all together output that thickest string and how it sounds compared to the other 4 when you play the strings across. You can set a pretty nice, thick, well rounded bass sound only to have the low B have two-second long sustain that is shit and that lacks lows and highs and sounds unusable.

Tension is easily rectified but that doesn't make it all. Also I can't say that there is a correlation for sure but all basses with non-maple necks seem to handle it better than ones with maple only.
>>
is there always going to be a ton of fret buzz on any guitar with a capo?
>>
>>71324112
If the tension isn't the issue then why are 35'' scale basses better in that regard? If the pickup is the issue then why can't you just change it? You haven't given a sensible answer on the issue.
>>
>>71324112
If you are going to replace the pickups and electronics anyways then won't that fix the problems with 5th string? I'm going to be replacing just about everything on the squier.
>>
>>71324123
I've had buzz when using a capo before. I found that if a slightly adjusted the capo position, the buzz went away
>>
>>71324145
Because 35" basses are designed for lower tunings from the get-go.

Go to youtube and pick out 10 random 34"five-string bass reviews and listen to them. At least 8 of them will have a shit fifth string and when the player gets to it it will instantly get lost in the mix even if it does sound somewhat alright.

This isn't something I made up now, this is what all bass players find to be true.
>>

>>
>>71324182

>>
Kek I use to jam a short scale 5 string bass and sounded fine. 35 will give a bit more clarity, but damn, change eq on different guitars and shit. Cut some bass off the amp when using a 5 string or 7/8/29 string guitar.
>>
>>71324182
>Because 35" basses are designed for lower tunings from the get-go.
Citation needed. How about just using the pickups those basses are using? You still haven't isolated the issue, you don't know the cause of it, which is why, frankly, I wouldn't blindly trust your advice. It's based in hearsay and not on factual data.
>>
>>71324317
Alright man, you win, all five string basses are fucking fantastic, its just that all the bass player seem to be too fucking stupid to use them properly.
>>
>>71324346
That's not what I said, I've literally just followed your train of thought and proven to you that you don't know the cause of the problem. I have my own theories, and I'm pretty sure it's mostly down to bad pickups, low tension or crappy bridges.

Make sure the capo is right behind the fret you're using it on. Not somewhere in the middle.
>>
>>71324346
>just that all the bass player seem to be too fucking stupid to use them properly.

That us partially true. Most manufacturers tend to give the bass a bass end boost, or use super high output pickups and that just maked the 5th muddy, drains the clarity, or causes soft clipping badly with a bass boost and high output pickups. Humbuckers work better for 5 string desu, p pickups better than j, and obviously better brand pickups will sound better thsn the potmetal crap the manufacturers use nowadays. Its all player taste, maybe they want barts, maybe some dimarzio will be their liking. Thats the pain of buying and swapping shit though.

Again, I played on a 5 string short scale in a band setting and didnt take anything away, cutting the bass on eq, giving a bit more mid and high end helps.
>>

>>71324399
>>If only they knew the power of the knob
>Great advice if any of the knobs would actually take it

Having played with numerous bands over the years, you always get the one guy thst thinks the eq with max high and bass with absolute zero mids is "HIS" tone. Usually on some crappy marshall hd100 halfstack too. Will always flip out if you adjust anything. Wonders why a 30w 112 combo is blowing his amp away. Will always suck live and blame everyone else.

The eq is there for a reason. Adjust it. Different guitars will interact different. If I use my tele, then swap to some emg machine, it will sound like a box of rocks and angry bees with an alien fucking it on a drug fueled berserk rampage. Cutting some preamp gain and bumping the high down and mid up may help end the squelching and give it some dynamics.

Or you can be a dumbass and wonder why you cant be heard or think guitars suck because you are too lazy and dumb to adjust the eq on the amp/pedals.

buying everything seperate will end up costing me 3x as much and while I will be able to switch every single effect on and off on the fly I won't get nearly as much versatility as with a multi effect

>>
>>71324495

How do I make instrumental songs that are interesting? I can write reasonably catchy riffs but with no lyrics to hold interest I feel like playing the same melody several times over the same chord progression (verse 1, verse 2 etc) will just be repetitive.

I had a VM Jag and I put some AVRI pickups in it. I've switched pickups before in other guitars but this was by far the most drastic improvement in sound for a pickupswap.

Dunno how the pickups in the VM JMs...the ones in the VM Jags are really gainy and treble heavy. The AVRI is so much more balanced and lower output.

I like to think the Staytrem I had improved the sound too but think that may be placebo. It was certainly worth the 100 bucks to have a not shit bridge on it though. I had done all the bootleg tricks to the stock bridge that offsetfags who actually like the normal one say to do and they were all crap improvements.

make sure u bar the frets as close to the fret as possible. your finger should be almost ON the metal fret instead of in the middle of the fret space.
Also, if i was you i'd practice further up the neck, dont start with an F bar chord.
Start by barring the 5th fret and doing an E shape bar chord, which will make the chord an A major

strings at headstock are still nubbed since the day I got it over a year ago
Wouldnt tuning it cause the strings to expand?

For under $50, it looks like the Behringer U-PHORIA umc22 is your best bet. I've never used it, so I can't vouch for it.

well it sounds like youre not tuning it enough. make sure you start with the high e and tune up a lot.
>>
>>71329454
ALSO when I need to tune, my tuner claims that my strings are too tight instead of loosening. Am I missing something?
>>
>>71329492
are you sure you're not an octave too low? tune up so the tension is right. just keep tuning up, youll know when it happens.
>>
>>71329518
Im afraid the string will snap in my face
idk i'll give it a go

lads

epiphone sheraton II.

y/n?

i've been eyeing a hollow body for a while and after playing around with one at guitar center it's surpassed just about every Gretsch in price range.

>>
>>71329862
just get a squier tele and modify that

accept you arent a luthier now, because the end result of your diy bullshit will be a terrible instrument
>>
>>71330004
if you need to ask then you're not as good as you think you are
>>

when you stop saying "im not very good" before you play for or with other people
>>
>>71330046
I think I'm mediocre at best, probably not very good
>>
>>71329950
what the fuck
>>
>>71330012
But I can follow tutorials. I know I can get kits that include all the parts needed to build a geetar
>>
>>71329950
I think that you need a back brace to play that
>>
>>71330071
I think this is a decent answer.

Also when you stop giving a shit if someone says you're good or not

lmao they're the best "shred" guitar north of $1000
>>
>>71330285
they do but most people lack the ability to turn a knob and tweak a setting and they dont realize all stock patches sound like ass but the modelling technology is actually really good
>>
>cantt decide between MiA or MiM standard strat
fuck
>>
>>71330785
It's simple really, one guitar is made by mexicans and the other guitar is made by mexicans
>>
>>71330812
what kind of upgrades should I do for MiM, locking tuners? New pickups?
>>
>>71330827
everything on a made in mexico fender is 100% totally fine to use everyday for all kinds of playing

stop think you need to upgrade everything
the hardware on the american strat is literally the same shit just they charge more for it
>>
>>71330827
Honestly I'd upgrade the stock pups for the MiA too.
>>
>>71330897
you havent heard either anyway what do you know
you couldn't even tell the difference between squier pickups and american pickups
>>
>>71330785
The only real difference is price. I noticed that the big guitar shops like Guitar Center and Sam Ash keep the lower priced guitars out of tune so they sound bad off the bat. When I bought my last guitar I picked up a Mexican telecaster, tuned it, and compared it side by side to the american. Could not tell a single difference
>>
>>71330827
Whatever changed you make, keep the old components and set it back to stock spec when you sell it and upgrade.

True. But I've noticed the cheaper ones are always out of tune and the expensive ones are perfectly tuned. Maybe it is the focus of the employees to tune the expensive guitars, but the conspiracy theorist in me points to it being planned
