a lot of discussion on /mu back then surrounded pitchfork reviews. the new music from "best new music" back then was the canonized indie stuff from the early 2000s.
the music wasn't on commercials, the fashion hadn't become ubiquitous, the concerts were still relatively small, and the scene encouraged unique, eccentric songwriting, which this album delivered.
they were different times, and /mu/ was much better then.
