There's a few albums in Pink Floyd's catalogue I would rate higher than DSOTM such as WYWH, Animals, and Meddle, but DSOTM is still very much an enjoyable album. I'd say it's popularity is due to it's well written songs, structure that was a mix of experimental/progressive but still easily accessible, and iconic album cover.

It sounds cheesy, but DSOTM was the album that would eventually get me into prog.

It has a shitty rep because of druggies thinking it's simply ebin and seeing girls or hipsters wearing the t-shirts without knowing a single fucking song of theirs.
