day of the dead goat
Not gonna lie. I have gone from absolutely loving the guy to thinking he's pretty decent over the past...seven months or so. Most of what the dude played is very simple stuff. He's best appreciated when he's doing his minimalism style approach to subtle differences in playing the same thing, or when he's doing one of his tape loop/sampling experiments. Actually nvm fuck it I still love the guy.
My favorite guitarist, love his work.
Best early Fahey is Death Chants, Breakdowns, and Military Waltzes
Best Mid Era is Requia
Best Late Era is Fare Forward Voyagers
how much of an asshole do you have to be to get molested by your own dad?

>FFV
>late era
What? Late era Fahey would be Hitomi, Red Cross, etc.

Yeah it's funny how he can get overlooked for people like Kottke since most of what he plays isn't that hard to play, but at the end of the day it's just his focus and intensity on every single note and syncopation that just has a quality I don't think any other guitarist has quite captured. His music really feels like a continuation of the 78rpm era blues country and gospel music

wow, I was trippin there. Yeah, late era would be womblife

Pretty much every acoustic player that plays finger style open tuning with blues or folk gets compared to Fahey...Fahey being the progenerator, which is kind of stupid because he wasn't the first and obviously was heavily influenced by other players.
To me Fahey just made really nice music and was never caught up with technique. He is not Tommy Emmanuel but he was certainly no slouch of a picker.

True, it is interesting how everyone in the Takoma school seems to be indebted not just in style to him but also to his weird persona and quirks. He definitely was more about making something artful and mysterious than technically proficient.

Focusing on technical complexity kind of misses the point when it comes to Fahey. He focused primarily on rhythm and restraint. Its hard to play in such a slow, stripped down way and the strength in his playing is in the control.
