Well that's primiarly the reason Epiphone even exists. The only other legitimate reason you'd buy an Epiphone over a Gibson is because you want to and that's really the only reason you need.

I personally probably could afford a better guitar but I play Epiphone for 2 reasons. I'd like to own lots of guitars to cover most genres, experience what each different model offers and so I can play whatever I like depending on what frame of mind and/or mood I'm in. I also play Epiphone to really stick it to the brand-jockeys and show people that Epiphones, particularly high-end Epiphones are more than stage worthy.

If you have the money, nothing will top a good traditional, standard or a custom, but some of the lower end studios, tributes and fadeds aren't the greatest quality and a high end Epiphone might end up playing better for you. Of course a Gibson Custom is going to sound and feel better than an Epiphone Custom, by what margin and whether that margin is worth 500% markup is debatable but it's undeniably true, otherwise Gibson would be out of business.

If you have the money, go for it, but if you don't, Epiphone is a great alternative to still get in the ballpark of the sound and feel you want.

this isn't just shitposting anymore, you're actually getting into this

my band gets paid but we don't really make money from it as individuals. if we get $200 for playing a crowded show it goes into our band fund and put towards new merch or recording funds.

Making money as a solo act is workable but if you don't draw a crowd you won't get paid. most crowds want to see bands.

>>
>>71272495
yeah, and that's actually a lot for one show. It's usually less than that for us, a surfy punk band. some shows you don't get paid at all because it all goes to the touring bands. And sometimes you just play to drink for free and for tips, both of those situations suck. If no one comes to your show, you're not getting money. It's the band's job to bring a crowd, not the bar. With some exceptions.

if you're in one of those tappy metal bands that plays shitty arenas and opens for Polyphia you might get paid more but you have to pay to play and sell your own tickets for that stuff. It can be a scam.

if you play classical or jazz you have more opportunities to earn money. or even if you play covers as part of a wedding reception band.

So I've been hearing a lot in this general that all you have to do to get gud is listen to a song you like and then learn how to play it, but this is not the way to go about it, I sincerely think that musical theory is underrated and you will need it in order to grow as a musician.

Learning to read music for example has been extremely useful to me, especially when trying to compose a song.
>>
>>71272762
you dont need to know how to read music to play guitar well

it actually has very little to do with it

this is a fact
>>
>>71272762
pretty much yeah.
but it's also interesting to hear what people do to keep those same scales and chords interesting.
>>
>>71272799
Yeah that's true, but when you have beginners coming into these threads and they get told to just copy without understanding I don't think that's solid advice.

Of course if all you want to do is be able to play what you're told then there's nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>71272762
does reading sheet music mean you know music theory?
>>
>>71272848
Sight reading music wont help you learn scale patterns, it wont help you create cool licks and it wont help you come up with a catchy song, because all the greatest pop songs are literally the same few chords over and over again.
Teaching someone to read music as a beginner and an introduction to guitar is overkill and a great way to put them off guitar forever.
The best way to learn guitar is the cheating way, or the easy way. Memorize what scale shape patterns look like, learn how to transpose them, understand the circle of 5ths and relative keys and THEN try and figure out more complex music theory.
>>
>>71272762
music theory alone won't help you compose a song, just as grammar alone won't help you write a novel. Your study material and practice routine should be centered around your personal goals. For most of us, this includes a basic grasp of theory. Beginners who reject theory from the start are sure to hit a wall.

But by only playing parts you've composed yourself, you are also sure to get stuck. you're also missing out on essential guitar vocabulary. Every genre has its own cheesy vocab of classic licks that it DEFINITELY benefits you to learn. Especially in jazz, you absolutely need to mimic other peoples' solos and learn that library of genre-specific licks.
>>
>>71272581
Its actually an intro for a metal song. The end arpeggio ties in to the next track.
>>
>>71272342
have it, first guitar i ever tried to mod and i was a bit over ambitious.
Didn't alter the playability or sound, its a loud guitar and the coil splits i actually use for a change, as every time in the past theyve been complete shit.
>>
>>71272918
I agree, my point was simply that if you don't want to get stuck I think it's a good idea to deal with at least basic theory sooner rather than later.
And as you say learning the vocabulary of different genres is essential to familiarizing yourself with new ways of playing.

>>

I doubt it, but if you have a couple nice mics and an audio interface you should really try the switch for science, with "before" and "after" clips. Because holy shit there are like a billion people who will claim changing capacitors to "bumblebee drops" or whatever "improves muh toanz" and yet none of these fuck face hicks ever make before after clips OH GOD MY AUTISM REEEEEEE
>>
alright gg let's make a road trip playlist
what are you bumpin in the car?
>>
>>71273227
I could see the tolerances mattering as it will effect how close to spec it is but other wise I'm kind of skeptical. It being a korea made cheaper model I wouldn't be surprised if the electronics didn't have the best tolerances. I don't see how a switch would effect quality though. I've kind of wanted to stick a push/push in my volume knob too just so I can have both coil tap and either phase switching or switching between series/parrallel.

Also, I think I might have fucked up my tone pot. I turned it a bit too hard and now the 0 and 10 stops in different places. Not sure if I just fucked up the positioning of the knob or if I stripped the pot or something. It has a wobble now when I I pull it out since it's a push/pull.

I know different farad ratings on your caps can change your low to end rating but I"m not sure how much of a difference there is between the cheaper and more expensive caps besides tighter tolerances.

My band only plays one or two shows a month. More than that for a non-cover local band will spread you too thin. Here's where we make our money:

>Cut of ticket sales
Average is $200-400, our best was $1000

>Shirts at shows
Average is somewhere around $100-150 per show. Sometimes a lot more, sometimes only 1 or 2 sold

>Album sales (online, through mail, at shows)
We've only had our album out a few months. About $1200 in physical sales so far, Bandcamp is at $400, not sure about iTunes and other online stores. It's gonna be awhile before we break even on what we put into it. If it even happens.

And like the other guy was saying, all money made goes directly back into the band. There's no such thing as profit until you're big as fuck

So, since the only thing that makes a difference in the quality of pots is the tolerance in how close to spec it is does anyone know what pots have the highest tolerances? Most of them seem to have +/- 20% tolerances which is pretty disappointing. Trying to avoid anything made "specific for guitar" since that makes no difference in anything besides getting charged more money.

Im the infamous buy/seller here so I've made a lot through CL, EBay and Reverb. When it comes to playing shows we get paid a portion of ticket sales depending on how many came to see us play specifically. At the door they ask the attendee who they came to see and if it's us we get a mark next our name and at the end of the night each mark is $4 to the band (or $1 each) We've only been playing shows early this year so we're only netting $100-$200, hopefully more when we setup online for things to buy like downloads. We've yet to record our songs though.

It really depends on the individual, you should try one out for yourself and see if it works for you. This is why I have a "never buy guitars online" policy; 10 minutes with a guitar in your hands is worth more than 10 hours of Youtube clips and 100 pages of TheGearPage threads.

No doubt you can "play well" without theory or reading, hell I can play well, but 9/10 times guitarists that have deeply studied theory and notation have blown me the fuck out. It's not even that much to study when the fretboard is one large pattern and learning scales is all you need to solo like a madman.

>>71274450
Rics have a 33" scale IIRC (or 32") the neck is fatter, it's not hard to play just needs getting used to. If you're a guitarist going into playing bass I'd suggest with a short scale of 30" like a Mustang bass or if you wanna stick with the Ric budget get an Ampeg Dan Armstrong bass
>>
>>71274555

I have a Bachelor of Music degree so I guess I have "deeply studied theory and notation", here's my opinion: it depends on what you want to do. Want to be a session guitarist? You'd better be able to sight read like a mofo and be able to play a bunch of different styles convincingly. Want to be a Jazz guitarist? You'd better be able to sight read and know your theory forwards and backwards. Want to play rock or pop music in a band? I don't think you need to know much theory for that, necessarily. Then again, sometimes I get the feeling what I consider "not much theory" is other peoples' "a lot of theory".

Go get an Epiphone LQ, /gg/ has been through all this before:
>The Epiphone LQ series guitars are the highest quality Les Paul copies ever made in Japan, and one of the best kept secrets of all the Japanese made LP copies. They're basically Fujigen built versions of Gibson Custom Shop Historic reissue guitars. 50s style neck profiles, long neck tenons, open book Gibson headstocks, etc. and they have the "Les Paul model" decal on the headstock. They even have period correct lacquer finishes instead of poly.
You can pick one up right now for $1000 - $1500 but that won't last forever once people start figuring out how rare they're becoming.

Requirements:
Must be an Electric Guitar
Guitar must be new and in stock at my lovely reliable aussie store: https://www.musoscorner.com.au/

Budget: ~ $750 Australian Dollarididgeridoos (slightly flexible)
My Genre: anything and everything

My 2 bugaboos:
No Floyd Roses (or FR style trems)
No EMG/metal-guitar nonsense

Like I said, most votes gets bought and every single vote for something gets logged in excel. If you see someone replied with something you want to vote for, reply to their post, not this one.

/gg/ i need your help
So i just started playing in a metal band.
We are using an AxeFX 2 and the other guitarist has a pic related mayones 7 string duvell with a slightly different design.

Now i was looking to buy this guitar but since he already got it im thinking about getting a different 7 or even 8 string.

Can anyone recommend some brands? i was looking at Hapas guitars, they look nice but they don't offer one for testing cause they only produce if you actually order a guitar.

Agile seems to be pretty weak quality from what i've heard.

Guitars aren't expensive. When you consider a good American Fender is about a grand, think about what kind of car you would get for that, or what sort of laptop you could buy. An iPhone 7 is like £600 which gets you a really nice Mexican Fender or top of the line Epiphone for example.

Bought this in Nicaragua, it was made by a Lutheran down here and I got it for a crazy good price, I've been down here for the past 5 months enjoying playing it but soon I'm headed home, is there any way I can acclimate it over time to the New England climate with some care, or is it a better idea to sell it before I leave
>>
>>71280485
Cool. Thanks. I'll go get some today. Are medium scale strings harder to come by? The only ones I find seem to be much more expensive than regular bass strings.

I have a short scale bass, but the strings go through the body, so I need mediums.

I kind of like the looks of the Traditional Pro II. It's got a satin neck from what I've read which was my biggest complaint about the regular Standard I played a while back. Should I get one?
>>

Doesnt matter if they go through the body. You should use pliers to cut off the excessive lenght and then wrap it through and around the tuning pegs.

>>
>>71280650
No no no.
Wrapped ends go on the beginning, pic related. They keep the string in place.
You pull the string to the tuning peg, give it 4 inches extra, clip it. Insert it into the tuning peg from above, then bend it at 90 degree angle and wrap it around the tuning peg. Make sure that you don't wrap it the wrong way.

Honestly strings are a simple thing but noobies fuck it up often, its best to get them to install them for you at the place where you bought it. Also have them clean up your bass and set it up (adjust string height so that frets dont rattle etc). So you can see for yourself how its done.

Not all string models have that shit. And on those that do, their sole purpose is that they are easier to bend. No biggie.

And you still need to cut that in advance because you dont mount the string onto the peg like you do on a regular electric guitar. See the pic, you insert the string end into the circular recess until it hits the end, then you bend it outwards and wrap it around. Again, people often fuck it up by bending it the opposite way and winding the string outwards.

I gave up completely and only use my electric for recording and playing with band.

For practicing and learning songs i use my acoustic. Its nylon so its strings last longer, ideal for that purpose.

Noodling on acoustic aint that fun but i simply dont noodle anymore. Small noodlings between pauses on band rehearsal is enough to have some taste of the guitar sound.

Guitars don't need nor require too much compression unless we are talking about dynamic clean playing.

That was my point. It just sounded like an extension of the riff that was going on. No tone change. No volume increase. No feels increase. Just playing.

Put some emotion in your guitar. When you stop singing, it needs to start.

There are two guitars in that part, the rhythm that keeps the same and the lead over it
Both are in the center of the stereo maybe thats why it sounded like just the rhythm

Both. I think the pups were active as well, hence the 2 9v batteries. The double knob was quite neat as you got to choose the frequency to boost, but I think that rolling the highs up only boosted fret noise, I had it for years and never was truly satisfied with its sound.
That said, I kinda only play passive basses nowadays. everything flat in the amp, just rolling a little of the tone knob if I want less fret noise
These are my basses:
