Dots and Loops is better in theory than it is in practice. Stereolab collaborating with Mouse on Mars and members of Tortoise sounds like it should be a masterpiece. In reality, TRNBWA and ETK are both better. Still a good album though

Dots and Loops is beginning of the end of Stereolab, as far as i'm concerned. Tim Gane started using computers and I guess he wanted to make more cerebral stuff, but it just sounds sterile (even though Miss Modular is an awesome song)
I don't even buy the muh analog meme that much, my favorite artists are Autechre and I love what they do with computers, Max/MSP and stuff, but Stereolab were definitely better on tape.

Eh, I dunno about the beginning of the end but I'd say it's probably their last truly great album with Refractions of the Plastic Pulse being my overall favorite song from them. Also pretty big on Miss Modular, Diagonals and Parsec, though otherwise the 3 albums before it are generally better. That all said, I think Margerine Eclipse is a fine effort for post-DAL Stereolab.

How do I into this album? My top 3 Stereolab albums are 1. Dots and Loops 2. Sound-Dust 3. Voltage in the Milky Night.

Yeah, Margerine Eclipse is definitely underrated. The hard panning sounds a lot better than what it should implies, and Mary wasn't there too ;_;
One underrated thing by them is also one of their performance on KCRW, Morning Becomes Eclectic, but sadly it was taken off Youtube a year ago or something... ;_;
