James Brown is 80% of funk. Listen to a greatest hits compilation. After that, Herbie Hancock,s early Headhunters stuff, and greatest hits of Parliament/Funkadelic, Kool & the Gang. The rest is one hit wonders, perhaps the best way to access other stuff is through hip hop sample source lists.

I started with a nice Wal Mart compilation album called "Funk". A good start for 5 year old me. Funkadelic, Kool & the Gang, and Average White Band are good, off the top.
