I think what stops people from really discussing Grunge is the huge mountain of smelly shit that came after that first wave. If there weren't such shit "alt-rock" bands in the 90s the reputation might not have been so diminished.

Grunge is weird it put out some of the greatest hard rock bands and songs of the past 20 years. But the genre itself was marketed soulessly and formulaic. And post grunge was the complete shits.
Best things to come out of it were alice in chains, mad season, in utero, melvins, early smashing pumpkins.
