So basically a record label pays a radio station to play a song and once that song is meme'd into enough people's heads a movie studio pays the record label to use it in their movie.

The record label, the radio station, and movie studio are all owned by the same company; it's really brilliant. The only down side is that it's become more difficult to blackmail homosexuals and runaway teenagers into working for pittance, so they've switched to minorities, betamales, and eastern european mail-order brides like Bebe Rexha. This is a pretty big part of why rap and electrotrash is so popular right now, it's the perfect filler for this formula.
