I think that's the charm of RDL, that is sounds rough, it's why I love the first Maiden record, but Kill'em All is to far in that direction and sounds like garbage, especially the vocals
Although I love the record, I do wish James's sining was a bit more refined as there's still a bit of screeching, most notably on Creeping Death
I don't think there's ever been a singer who's vocal performance throughout the years resembles a bell curve as much as his, maybe Rob Halford is a close second but even in Rocka Rolla he was still singing and not schreeching beyond his vocal range like James on KIll'em All

You have to give it to Hetfield that he was still in his teens when they were playing the Kill Em All stuff and RTL was a year or so later.
I think the vocals work on RTL, his tone is a lot better but there's a lot of anguish and expression in his singing.
