tuners are actually incorrect, it is better to tune to your ear

this is because, although it is correct that every octave has the exact same steps, the higher you get it just starts to sound out of tune.

so to actually be in tune, you have to be slightly out of tune

Those fingernails are disgusting.
What he's explaining is basically that tempered tuning is a meme, so basically the third of the G major scale and the second of the A major scale aren't the exact same notes. This has nothing to do with "the higher you get" but rather with you playing in a particular key.
Essentially, your frets would have to have the correct alignment, and you would only be allowed to play on one string at a time depending on the key you're in (so if you're in A, you can only play on that string). If you play on the D string but your scale is in E, the notes will be that liiiittle bit off. This differs from wrong intonation however, in that the offset produced by wrong intonation will increase the higher up the fretboard you go, but the offset (measured in cents) introduced by the fact that E != E will be the same in the 2nd and 14th fret.

so guys, when you're playing guitar and are in a band setting (i.e. have a drummer, bass player, keys, and singer), are you actively keeping time in your head? Because I've found that when I'm playing with others I just feel the beat and can anticipate the changes coming along so therefore I don't count. Is it a bad habit?

how do i change scales when improvising..

how do i move around the neck?

like.. what's the theory about moving from one scale to another?
is it just the chord progression?
so if the chord progression was G -> A -> C i could do a C G or A scale improv?
all i do is fuck around in one scale and it gets boring fast

Try to play fewer notes, but make the ones you do play count. As in, try to find simple, short licks of like 3 notes that will fit the chord change, then string them together into a melody. Start simple, add complexity as you go along. Some notes that are technically out of key might sound good in context. Being able to come up with melodies that incorporate those makes a good musician.

>>71198774
instead of moving around the neck, try practicing arpeggios and scales in one position. come up with your own exercises for that, like run up an Amajor scale and then once you get to the last note that you can reach in that position, run down a B major scale or something.

it's not easy getting used to switching around like this, but you'll get there eventually. just start small and focus on chord tones

My band is covering Feel by Ty Segall as our encore and I've got the first solo, it's all improvised because it's an easy 3 chord jam to use as a filler. the couple times we've played it I've just been stuck soloing between the keys of B and D or on the 7th through 12th fret for you new friends. Is there any sort of techniques I can do that can help me transition to other keys? At home I have the backing track looped (bass and guitar) but whenever I switch keys they sound forced, out of place and inorganic.

Tuner's aren't "incorrect," they're just approximate. The video you posted doesn't say "don't use a tuner," it explicitly say to use one, BUT make microtonal adjustments from there using your ear.

>the higher you get it just starts to sound out of tune.
Are you referring to the Pythagorean tuning approach the video talks about? Because that's something very different than anything related to modern guitar intonation. There's really nothing else in that video that reflects what you're saying here.

I guess you're better than someone who simply believes a tuner is 100% correct, but holy shit you've got some misinformation bouncing around in your head.

Some people/styles prefer clean sounds that you can really only get from solid state amps, particularly for jazz guitar, acoustic, pedal steel. It's not that uncommon, just unexpected for rock/distortion-oriented guitarists who think tubes are objectively greater in every way.

My GT-100 can do this. Whenever I use the effect when other people are around they get super mad because I'm not using a stereotypical classic rock OD sound or a boring, neutral, flat clean sound. You can combine it with a lot of effects, it's pretty fun to play with this. I wouldn't use it on recordings though, it sounds really tacky. I hate when I hear a song and can tell which guitar pedal has been used, I always have this problem when I listen to Buckethead.

>>71202155
what is the tuning?
>>
>>71202958
Sound-wise that's pretty subjective, and that's exactly my point. Technically speaking, solid state amps ARE cleaner, in that they aren't doing as much to the signal. Even clean tube sounds are coloring and compressing the signal very subtly. Some people like it, others don't.
>>
>>71200386
This. They are perfect
>>
So I am finally getting into clean sounds now, after years of overdriven / distorted guitars in rock and metal. What are your favorite undistorted guitar sounds? Allowed: modulation effects (chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo), filters and time-based effects (delay, reverb).
>>
>>71203682
modulation delay (similar to delay+chorus, but much better). it's what johnny marr uses

How hard are guitars to play at a decent level (can play multiple simple songs without fucking up) compared to the piano? >>
>>71204285
why? the only way you can impact the sound of the an actual piano is dynamics and pedals. of course this does not apply to synthesizers or all keyboards in general. still, there is much less things to keep in mind than on most instruments. every note only exists once so playing sheet music is just following instructions while on many other instruments you have many different possibilities to play the same thing and you need to actually find the one that works best for yourself. the hardest thing for a beginner is probably getting a feeling for which finger to use for which key.
playing a piano is basically like pic related. there really isn't much room for personal style apart from _what_ you play..

anyone have experience with ibanez gio models? I realise they're more budget oriented but for an intermediate to advanced player would they be a good choice? I currently still have a guitar I got from a startet pack that on it's own would've probably cost about 100-120 euros, it's pretty good regardless but I would like to have a guitar with more features and that's better built
currently have my sights on an ibanez grg250dx, I just think it looks the shit (subjective I know) but it has a lot of features on it, H/S/H pickup set up, 24 frets and a whammy bar, costs about 300euros
Should I just avoid the entire gio range, suck it up and fork over 400+euros for a really good guitar

well I don't really have a steady job, I'm still at uni so yeah, 400 euros is quite a lot of money for me, especially since I play the guitar more for recreation rather than anything else, but I guess I'll have to clock in those extra hours to get a good guitar
>>
>>71204900
honestly, don't get a GIO. they're poorly built and shit.
>>
>>71204900
basically the less you pay the more dissapointment you get

if you have a starter guitar the next step on your guitar buying journey should be something that is actually comfortable to play
because your starter guitar is not how a guitar should feel
neither is that ibanez probably

you don't need 24 frets
you don't need special pickups

you need a guitar that feels good to play.

and maybe they start at around 500 euros

do yourself a favour and do not buy a budget guitar

>>
>>71205006

I'd say save up 600+ for an intermediate guitar at least. The nicer it is the more you will want to play it, anything 400 or less is crap because the finishing touches and quality control will be as rough as fuck and it will be a pain in the ass to use over time. Even if its only for recreation you might as well treat yourself a little bit since its something you enjoy.
>>
>>71205099
OK, let me tell you of my personal experience. I had an Ibanez RG420EG and it was terrible. Just a shit job of a guitar. I too thought it was cool as shit and coudlnt be talked out of it, and goddamn I was unhappy with it. I didnt play for a year, I couldnt be fucked playing on it. A year later I sold it and got a different, much better guitar, and I am happy as hell, playing all the time. The problems with the guitar? Terrible tremolo, it went out of tune all the time, it was a bitch to tune and change strings, the pickups sounded muddy as shit, and it just wanst that comfortable to play. I regretted so much not buying something else and better.

A friend of mine had an Ibanez GIO, it was a piece of shit as well. Couldnt stay in tune, the sound was atrocious, frets were bad.. it was just a shit guitar. I imagine most of budget GIO guitars would be in the same league. I know you think it looks cool and all, but you will be disappointed, and you will regret it. The worst case scenario is that you'll get fed up with guitar and stop playing completely. You're a student, you can't fuck around with money, so make this purchase count! Save if you must, but get a better guitar. You will thank me and the other anon.

I have a full time job and hardly ever come here unless I have a day off and am too tired to do anything else but read.
A good time is never time wasted my arrogant young millennial friend! Just remember this: Et in Arcadia ego.
>>
>>71205266
this, if you're that in love with the color scheme just get a black mexi strat and put a red pickguard on it

Goddamn, I didn't think it was possible to cringe this hard. I like McCarthy as much as the next guy, but don't ever do that shit again.

Thanks man, I guess I'll save up and buy a Jackson or something
I've been playing the guitar for 4 years by now so there's no chance a crappy purchase would make me give it up, worst case scenario if I bought it I'd end up selling it at half price
Appreciate the advice
>>
>>71205384
Also, be sure to always try the guitar out. Happy sailing and hope you'll make a great purchase, man.
>>

I was not referencing Blood Meridian but saying that you will also be old someday you ignorant little puke
>>
>>71205384
get a PRS SE

best guitar in that range imo
>>
>>71204199
Squier is that brand name. Squire is a knight's attendant.

It's easy to get them confused if you don't think about Squier guitars much.

I know what a squire is, but that word has nothing to do with the guitar brand and if you literally have a photo of a Squier guitar in front of you while writing your post you have no excuse to missspell it. If it only happened once because you were thinking about knights and knaves because you're a historian or have a medievel fetish, that's fine, but I see Americans mix these up ALL THE FUCKING TIME and it's seriously bothering me. Maybe it's because you pronounce ei and ie the same, so you stop paying attention and just write it whichever way. It tickles my autism.

didn't you try the guitar out before buying? are you literally retarded?

Why didn't you play it before you bough it? There is nothing worse than a guitar with a neck you don't like.
>>
>>71205817

I liked the look of it on the internet pictures, so yes
>>
>>71205832
let that be a lesson to you. never buy anything like that, it's idiotic
>>
>>71205831

I thought the longer fender scale would be easier for me to play but didnt take the neck thickness into account

Wait until you're playing in a smoke filled bar and somebody knocks it over and spills beer on it. It adds character.

The shit my local music shops sell makes harley benton look like gibson custom shop, so the only other option is to ask them to order in something you could just order yourself but pay 20% extra for the privilege of buying it in a real shop

I went to this upper market snobby secondary school (britfag) that had a seperate music school for gifted children, gifted my arse but thats another story.

Anyway this music school was so up its own ass it had nothing but contempt for electric guitars.

Despite having a Steinway grand piano the only guitars the entire school had were 2 squiers.

They were fucking horrible.

There are a lot of snobby music shops here who only grudgingly stock electric guitars and will totally look down their nose at you if you actually buy one, since you are not their target market of little lord faulteroy and his french horn lessons

They probably don't want their dignified music shop turning into Guitar Center.

And Pacificas are fine guitars.

If you want to lug around a heavy expensive tube bass amp to gigs and you play some kind of rock then tubes for sure. But a ss and a good preamp di will get you very close without breaking the bank or your back. Also most tube bass amps are too powerful to get "the sound" outside of stadiums and outdoor stuff
