There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

/prod/ IRC is up!
To join, you can go to http://www.rizon.net/chat
Choose a nick, put #/prod/ as channel. Enter!
Or you can get a lightweight desktop client here https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP: posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a Soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

It sounds like a demo that Jon Hopkins never finished. Just lacks a bit of sparkle or dynamics or something.

The bass sounds like they want to open up and get more ferocious than they do. Nothing really bursts out.

Drums sound like pretty standard field-recorder sample cut and paste shit.

There's no real aural hook. No sound that I'm latching on to or I'm desperate to hear more of.

Still better than anything I've ever done or probably will by a large margin.

As a side note I remember you from soundcloud threads probably 4-5 years ago. I liked your stuff back then too. You did a track In Walmart or something? With field recordings and noises, I thought that was pretty cool.
>>
>>71195776
Really like your use of the typewriter, however the intro takes to long before you finally start adding other sounds to it.

What pad design do you guys use to achieve that thick low-midrange?

The engineering manuals and soundonsound articles I read tell me to high pass my pads at 300hz, which usually ends up removing all weight from them.

Should I be mixing it with a sub bass? It never feels right when I do.
>>
>>71195776
why does every single /prod/ clip has such an obnoxiously long intro

engaging the listener is such a basic exercise in songwriting yet everyone here refuses wtf
>>
>>71196044
I agree m8

needs more high end in most of it too, just a little dull sounding without anything in that frequency range for half the time.

There's that little bell sound in the background and outro that is nice, maybe just smash dat the whole way through the track I dunno.
>>
>>71197211
Depends on the situation for sub.

High pass it wherever the fuck you want. If it isn't sounding thick enough because you are taking out the frequencies that make it sound thick then just don't do that. Do whatever you want man. Just be yourself.

Currently your subbass is polyphonic which is causing more than one voice to play simultaneously. This is generally sounds bad, and is the case here as well. It's causing a volume spike. Make the bass cut itself off and perhaps adjust the end volume envelope to not make it so legato.

What do you guys do to get around Ableton Live's piss poor panning? Is there a vst or something that does Pro Tools style pan pots or binaural panning/spatializers? Tempted to switch to Logic for this reason alone, I can't stand the lack of mixing flexibility in Live

obviously there's a lot of binaural plugins
>>
>>71212277
>obviously there's a lot of binaural plugins
Can you name one or two that isn't complete shit? And the difference is that Pro Tools uses pan pots while Live simply reduces the volume on the opposite channel when panned either way using the channel strip
>>
>>71212374
that's exactly how stereo panning works, on all desks, in all daws. the only difference is the level curves (equal gain, equal power, ssl style arbitrary fuckup, ...)

check out the flux ircam suite, there's some neat spatializing stuff in there

i know the feeling senpai. ive been really suicidal all this week. but in the end, it really doesnt matter that we arent gonna make money off this shit. what matters is that it makes us happy and lets us express ourselves. having people appreciate us and what we do is more valuable than any money. as the other guy said, setting goals is a good idea. ive decided im gonna try to finish an album sometime this year, and ive started learning how to solder to try to build some synth kits. it doesnt matter if you suck as long as you enjoy it, and the more time you put into it the less you suck, so its a win win situation.

https://clyp.it/cnmrz4xf

the part at the end with the stabs totally isnt done but whatever.
>>
>>71212803
you still got plenty of time to achieve goals. im totally addicted to drugs too unfortunately, got back on opis this week, but eh could be worse. its never too late to start achieving goals, or at least putting your best into trying. my dad didnt start making music till he was like 35 and he's a professor at a music school now, so it definitely can be done.

least youve got some friends! though if they think youre an asshole for that they dont seem like very good ones. holding down a job isnt really important in the longer term. i cant hold down one either to be honest. definitely look around for services. i had a homeless beggar ask me for weed out of the blue yesterday and i couldnt help but give him a bit of cash, if you got any jokes you could try unleashing them. same guy was asking for a dollar over and over then suddenly asked for fifteen thousand, if i start laughing i feel really bad for not giving anything.

>>
I play a sort of a maniac instrument and I find its higher notes (C6 - G6) are tiring to the ear.

Example: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0UmAmIQ8gt6 (it's not "terrible" sound but you will see that it is indeed tiring)

How do I equalize (or do anything to) these sounds to soften them so that they can be pleasant to the ear for a prolonged period of time? Is it even possible?

I tried equalizing down the 1K - 2K range but it just killed the high notes. I just want them to be mellow, not feeble.

Also I heard higher frequencies are bad for your hearing, compared to lower frequencies. Is it true? Man I don't want to damage people's hearing. But lower notes sound too muddy.
>>
>>71216100
4 to 8 k are the harsh frequencies. De-essing is the process to get rid of these in vocals and anything high.

So de-ess, or just eq dip around there, experiment, and or use a compressor.

Low bass is bad for your hearing too
>>

Thanks.

The notes themselves are in the 1K - 1.6K range, but do you think they contain 4 - 8K frequencies?

>Low bass is bad for your hearing too
But I read somewhere that lower frequencies gently travel throughout that snail shell-shaped thingy in your ear, while higher frequencies only keep bugging the neurons at the beginning of the thingy, so high notes tend to wear them out more.

Pic related.
>>
>>71216199
Yes because 1-1.6 k doesn't sound that harsh, in fact 2 K is often boosted a little in pop / rock songs for clarity

>I'm trying but can't understand how did you get to that conclusion lol.
sounds very carefree, like the song that plays in your hometown in a game.

i thought there were more but i cant hear it this time lol so maybe it was just me

1:03 the pad, 1:56/7, actually the part that starts there sounds like its straight out of a pop song so im not too fond of it. thing at 17 seconds sounds like a pop track too. 1:28/9 sounds like the song is endingso i dunno about that.

>>
>>71216245
Thanks, I like those detailed feedbacks.

Yeah, I get it now, it sounded carefree to me too, I just hope it's not (too) generic and I'm trying to work on that. I guess it's somewhat of a mix of multiple genres because I have no idea what this would be, but I'm sure of one thing - I don't listen to this kind of music at all. Maybe it can be explained that I made this straight after remaking Redbone by Childish Gambino so I was in that funk/soul mood (redbone is still the project file name), but I'm not sure if this would be one of those genres.

At first I thought you said it sounded like a child made it because of a few cringy bass parts that I will rewrite lol.

Some of the timestamps you mentioned are done on the purpose, but I'll think about the others.

But fuck me man, I've been doing prod for like 2+ years and this will actually be the first track I'll really finish. Kill me. I have no music direction at all, the other thing I'm doing is some Eric Whitacre-like classical piece.

If you're going for a muzak wallpaper sound, well done. The arrangment is so pleasant but the instruments sound so cheesy and fake, lus everything is so 'midi' as in I bet every note is snapped to a gridline. This makes it sound robotic and bad to humans. If you're in ableton you can use the groove pool to loosen up the timings for each channel and use some organic instruments with kontakt. But if you're going for exactly how that sounds then no need to change anything (to me its disgusting and unlistenable, I wouldn't be caught dead listening to it, but different strokes)

personally i think the carefree childlike thing you got goin is great. the synths are a bit generic, you could work on that a bit maybe. sounds like a super super light version of boc to me. and not in the gay stupid tycho way, capturing the emotional aspects and not fixating on their sound. looking forward to hearing it when its done! making things you dont usually make can turn out great because you dont come in with a bunch of biases. i know the feeling though, ive finished like 4 tracks total in my 2+ years and theyre all shit

Thanks guys! Yeah, after I finish the composition and arrangement I'm going into instrument tweaking and drum programming, a few people already said it sounds fake and I kinda feel that way too.

All the synths are done in Diva btw, and the strings are from Session Strings Pro, but I guess I'm not that good at sound design, it has always been a problem for me.

ive been making some music in fl studio for a year now and want to get a little bit into analog stuff. as a cheap thing to see how i like it i bought a TE po-12. now comes the complete idiot question: what do i use to record it the best? just plugging it into my pc and recording with audacity sounds kinda bad, is that wrong? please no hate

>>71216766
i bought a korg volca keys for the same reason recently! buy an audio interface if youre serious. otherwise just plug it into audacity. heck i mic mine using headphones as speakers.

make sure to get it working playing midi if you can, cause i actually had a synth a while back and never really got into it cause it didnt have midi in. suddenly with the volca keys where I dont have to learn how to play keyboard, im in love with it and getting my wallet ready to buy a bunch more synths

>>
>>71217211
playing midi information from your computer, not the other way around. unless you wanna buy a keyboard, then go ahead, you can find em really cheap at second hand stores or on craigslist. unfortunately i dont think the te po-12 does so that kind of sucks, will make it hard to use in tracks unless you build the track around it. you could set the bpm to match tho, would make it easier.

Question, does yours ever give you issues with stuck MIDI keys? If I'm playing back some MIDI I recorded real-time and stop it midway through, 9 out of 10 times it'll obnoxiously get a stuck key and I'll have to freeze then unfreeze the track...

The "current value" type ringy snares? You want Piccolo snares. Set the sample start on them a bit ahead to isolate the ringy tails. Then, 'graft' them onto your main edm type snare. If you used midi to quantize your drum single hits, then delay the thing about 2500 samples or around in that ballpark- and you can turn any snare into a 'ringy' snare.

Is anybody here bothered by the complexity of their songs/pieces?

I come from classical background and honestly, I always want and try to compose something more than a 2-3-4 chorder (at least on the Beatles level for example).

Currently I have a song that is just fun and the arrangement keeps the interest of a listener, but I didn't even realize how simple it is until I analysed it. Chorus has 3 chords, and it doesn't modulate, but borrows some notes from parallel scale. Also a few seventh chords here and there.

It doesn't make me feel good and now I'm trying to reharmonize it and recompose some parts, but it would ultimately lead to a completely different piece.

On the other hand, I'm constantly amazed by how simple many of the popular songs of today are and I always tell myself I'll try to make something simple but interesting.

But man, this can even be a good song, but it is not that original at all at this stage...

What are your thoughts about this?
>>
>>71235856
>Is anybody here bothered by the complexity of their songs/pieces?
i think most of us are on the other end of the spectrum making overly simplistic music
>>
>>71235856
Don't worry about it, there are great songs written on only 1 chord.
>>
>>71235856
>simple many of the popular songs of today are

that's the thing though, making music with the intention of mass appeal is a skill in itself. chart pop hits may sound simple but you can bet the composition was a lengthy and complex process

>>
>>71235856
brevity's wit.
>>
>>71235856
Originality is something you should do for yourself, not others.

Because original and having a pop sensibility combines the difficulty of the former with the difficulty of the second.

Do some Beatles shit. Add a couple extra beats here and there.

My favorite method is to take a regular chord progression and just play one "wrong" chord or weird one and replace one of the "right" ones and you get interesting results.

What kind of guitar? Electric or acoustic?

If acoustic, then definitely for vocals and guitar you'd want a large diaphragm condenser, like an AKG C214. Whatever mic you get, see if you can find a used one on eBay. You can save a lot if you're patient. I got a 1600$ Neumann TLM193 for 600$ on eBay.

If electric, the SM7b might be a good choice. It's a good vocal mic, and it's dynamic so it's good for recording guitar amps.

>but at that price I might just get a 57 and a 58.
The 57 and 58 are very similar mics. The difference is not really enough to warrant getting both just so that you can use one on guitar and one on vocals.

I typically high pass pads even higher, 600-900. Then I'll duplicate the bass notes of the pad onto a bass synth, and low pass that to fill in the gap... imo give you a little more control and nets a cleaner low end, especially if the pads are 4+ note chords

That's hilarious if true

On the topic I don't think developers even care that much, they make all their money through selling bulk licenses to studios and schools etc.

Should each /prod/ thread have a challenge? Like "make a winter-themed song" or something like that to drive more people to make shit?

Is there a way to get more than 12 tones?
>>
>>71246678
Don't think so, most commercial DAWs don't have microtonal interpretation unfortunately so you have to make your own patent which usually is lacking.

I think there is probably a way with a chain metrushka of some sort. It would probably require some programming acumen. The thing is you can deactivate the "scale" module within a certain range which suggests there is probably a way and I'm just too dumb to figure it out.

That 808 melody sounds dumb as fuck. Why so many glides, do you not understand tension and release? As for the mixing, it's pretty good, but the song is pretty generic(good for trap lmao)
