how come the trip hop revival never happened?
It metamorphosed into a sub-genre of Downtempo called "Brotempo"
Played this album for some friends in my car the other day and they all loved it.
Because there's nowhere left to go with it. It's been spread out like butter over too much toast.
Because there is only a few actually good trip hop artists and nobody knows they exist
Pleb: triphop

This.
The original soul of trip-hop, which was downbeat hip-hop music infused with dub elements and moody vibes, eventually evolved into a genre of it's own called Illbient.
Unfortunately Illbient was a stylistic clusterfuck of a genre, containing various stuff from musique concrete to drum and bass to proto-dubstep/future garage tracks, so it died as well in favor of dark ambient and dubstep/future garage itself.
Via the proxy of Illbient you could say that future garage like Burial are the logical successors to trip-hop I guess.

Nah, Illbient was a New York exclusive micro-genre blending hip-hop, dub, and ambient. It wasn't really a step in genre evolution as much as an anomaly.
