What do you guys think of the song I just finished up?
>>
I'm sure ppl itt must be sick of this question, but it's a technique that still eludes me...
How the fuck do you make that FlyLo / Brainfeeder / LA beat-style synth sound?

e.g.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqKt1533_RM
or
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lXD0vv-ds8
>3:23

Like, it's a supersaw with multiple voices, right?
Or a saw and a triangle?
And then what - a pitch envelope slowly detuning it up or down?
And it must be a 9th Chord of some variation

But every time I try to recreate it in any synth it always sounds flat/empty

What am I not seeing here?
>>
I recently realised that despite liquid drum and bass being one of my favourite genres I never really make a lot of liquid dnb tracks!

So today I tried making one

I found this on the official ableton forum

>I have run the test. Their is an music industry secret. I have Proof!

>Listen to the ableton track on Youtube. (the track that they use to advertise ableton)

>compared to the track first track you have, the first time you logged into the ableton program.

>(for those who dosnt have this track, try reinstalling ableton) Listen to the youtube one(wich is mastered by pros) it must be same volume and now listen to the Ableton one the first time you open Ableton Program after install. Notice anything?

>Well i do !the youtube track is more thumpy, and compressed, it reaches another level of overall volume .

>while the one that opens in ableton the first time after install sounds good , but not even close .

>So fuck what you guys heard. Their is a music industry secret they dont want ous to know about..

>All that money wasted on tutorials, all that time reading how to mix and bla bla bla, everything is misleading , you already know how to mix, you just need to know the right poeple in the industry or get the secret from them. and this is the truth

I read it three times and still can't get his fucking point, but I'm afraid I'm wasting my time
>>
>>71119016

>the youtube track is more thumpy, and compressed, it reaches another level of overall volume .

I don't know what the fuck they're moaning about - they've already worked out what has been done to the Ableton demo song after the mixdown stage. No secret there.

Definitely doesn't sound 170bpm, but I dig it. Main synth could use a little more body, but that lead that comes in around 1:30 sounds great.

I bit more leads could help fill the sound out, but it depends on where you want to go with it really.

>>71117302
>https://clyp.it/gy1d05de
Sounds great, only thing that stood out to be was around 2:30 I feel that the vocals could be a little louder in the mix. What did you use for the lead guitar at 1:20? Sounds very Pink Floyd.

I think I heard a mistake around 0:24 as well, but could be wrong.

>>71117552
Sounds like a sawtooth and some fairly aggressive filtering. Might be a bit of square in there, I'd have to get my synth out to hear it out.

>>71118215
>https://clyp.it/gbbreutu
I listened to it a few times. You've got a great sound going. The bass drum stands out a bit though, it sounds a little boxy with a bit of flub in the trail. Other than that the piano and bass both sound fantastic.

Closest I ever got to making DnB was years ago. Found a clip. Sounds terrible lol.
https://clyp.it/p21goxmx

--

I want to add vocals in some parts to this but don't want it to get super crowded. I know I'll have to relax the brass a bit but is there anything else I should do to keep the general sound the same. Pads, leads low in background, etc?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Old clip is first. New one is second, but I'm not really happy with how it is sounding so I'll probably go back and change a lot.

Any advice on finding singers to work with? I'm living in a studenty area so I thought it would be easy finding people up for it but apparently not
>>
>>71117302
Sound pretty amazing. Composition and production-wise. Mix is very pleasant, but a little quiet though. Still, everything in the mix sits well and flows great. Every instrument and the vocals sound top notch. Great job recording everything, bravo!

Anyway this is a very nice rock ballad (I think). Would buy your album dude. If it was a little louder I might have mistaken it for a professional track.
>>
>>71119637
Oh, you're the disco italo guy, right? I remember listening to your stuff a couple months back.

As for the songs, they sound a little thin I guess? I'm not sure if that's what they're supposed to sound like within this genre, but I'd at least add some more stereo width to some of the tracks, like the pads.
>>
>>71120482
>Oh, you're the disco italo guy, right?
Probably isn't me, I've posted that clip a couple times but it's my first time posting in ages. Even then it was usually stuff like this:
https://clyp.it/furqwrsx

>I'm not sure if that's what they're supposed to sound like within this genre
I'm shooting for more of a Toho style (the particularly Japanese sounding stuff) sound than SEB. That's also why I have the really transient attack.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uZEVIputp4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_017ctQIH8A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFDuB8oaC4s

>but I'd at least add some more stereo width to some of the tracks, like the pads.
Yeah automation is on the to-do list. I'll try adding in some pads later while I'm doing it and try and widen the sound up a bit. That should help compensate for the low end as well.

Thanks. Just need to work out how to clear some room for vocals now.
>>
>>71119637
>>71120482

Oh just to add, approaching vocals with a more SEB approach which should be easier to mix in.

Just face it, you'll never be famous.

You aren't special, no matter what your mommy tells you when you finish showing her ur shitty track and she has to lie to stop you from killing yourself.

You will never be a rockstar, you will never pioneer into new genres, you will never get the cars, the money, the women, or the attention.

You will never have young girls getting wet when they are in your mere presence.

But it's not like you had a chance to begin with? Martin Garrix went to an elite school of musicianship and has been producing for over 10 years, and he's only 20. At 18 he was touring the world, fucking bitches and getting money for producing child's play, whilst you fail to produce a musically coherent 4 bar loop.

There are 1000's of producers like this, child prodigies just itching for a chance to show off their amazing work, and you honestly think you stood a chance? No, you don't even have the intellect required to be a producer, so even if you "grind"(cringe) you will get no where and will never finish anything.

By all means, keep feeding money to Native instruments and cymatics, but keep in mind your going to have to work 9-5 for the rest of your life, and probably put in a few extra hours a week to pay back your debts.

>inb4 Martin Garrix is bad.
No, as he gets more pussy than you and i'd prefer to listen to his shit over anything you have the courage to upload and call "music")

>inb4 "I just do it 4 fun xD"
You don't, stop lying to yourself. You secretly want to prove everyone wrong, but think people can't see through facade.

Intro and build up is too slow. Add those hi-hats and sound layers in sooner.
That synth melody needs to repeat more, the time between each of it is too far apart.
You should keep the same rhythm, keep some of the same notes, but change up the notes. Keep the same amount of notes, keep the same rhythm, but just change up the notes a little.

Your snare rhythm isn't so bad.

Overall, it could use a little more sound effects like the stuff that comes in around 4:15; add a little more body to the piece.

The sound you're describing sounds roughly like what happens when you misuse a balanced cable by sending stereo audio into it (e.g. the left and right channel cancel each other out, creating a hollow/tinny sound). is this keyboard worth the 500 dollar price point if you make edm and just started playing piano ?
>>
>>71135904
if you just started piano no, get whatever cheap midi controller. edm barely needs midi in anyway.
>>
>>71135904
you could just grab a midi keyboard and an mpd or something and it would probably come out to less than $500
>>
>>71135904
With that budget I'd get something like a MiroBrute. It's a decent analogue synth which can be used as a midi controller. $300USD.
>>
>>71136159
what? why would you get an analogue synth to start? plus you could do much better for $300 for a controller
>>
>>71136183
so you can learn/experiment with sound design and shit. i'd imagine that's more important than actually learning how to play an instrument if you're making edm.
>>
>>71136296
there's not much of that you can do with just an analog monosynth though, that's more something to learn with a daw and virtualk synths/effects and then down the road you can decide if you wanna go analog or not

Been using Bitwig 2 beta as my only DAW since I got it and I gotta say, gaddam. The modulation system is amazing. Like a modular's power, and "Point this to that to this" mentality, it's fantastic.

Almost entirely native stuff. The bass is Wiggle, but the other synths and even the noise hats, are Bitwig synths.

desu I kind of like the single mic drum sound. It reminds me of lofi/punk records. Would you rather a more isolated drum sound?

>>71159416
kek its too late to rerecord. I'm planning on low pass filtering some of the cymbals out though. Maybe boosting presence and bass and layering something on the 3 to help the kick and snare pop during the bridges.
>>
>>71159711
I would rather be able to 'understand' anything of what the drummer is doing, it's just muddy and trashy and actually distracting from the music more than adding a rhythmic component

So I've made some more progress on this liquid drum n bass tune from earlier.

https://clyp.it/nkwwrnpr

What do you think? Would I be delusional to send the finished thing as a demo to a label or promo channel? Assuming I won't be making any major changes.

Does it sound like something you'd hear on a liquid dnb label?

Hate to tell you, but you're right in the phase when you start to be able to make stuff that actually sounds good, but at the same time you start to believe what you're producing to be much better than it is. Compare your track to your favourite liquid dnb track and ask yourself again.
It's not bad, but you've still got some work to do before your tracks become really solid.
One quick way to bump your game would be to start working on getting better mixes, as you can easily get away with simple compositions if you have a really solid mix. It sounds to me like you've got the basics down (levels, basic EQ etc.), but you're struggling to get energy and dynamics into the mix. Same with the composition, you've got the basics down, but it's not very dynamic and there's not too much going on.
You've got a solid ground to build upon and if you just keep working and evolving you'll get there eventually.

think they'll do a keystep pro? i wanna get it but i don't have much money and i'd regret it if the pro came out

I think I posted ITT 4 or 5 times, but no feedback and listens so I'm posting my progress. WIP, still arranging and doing some mixing/processing on the side, but nothing set in the stone.

Thanks for the honest critique anon, it really means a lot. I was feeling really anxious about this track and you pretty much put my feelings into words.

I'll keep trying to improve the track both mix and composition-wise then.

Thanks for the words of encouragement too! I really hope I can get somewhere with this music thing.

Labels will usually let the mastering house do all encoding so that all target formats are covered by the same contract, the mastering software of choice will have presets created by their engineers (or maybe they'll trust the presets bundled with the software, not all that common though) and set to work with their encoder of choice - a lot of them use LAME which can usually be set in the mastering application's options.

Hard to tell what genre this is but the composition, arrangement and mix are all spot-on. If anything, the parts with the lead synth sound a little barren. Also the soundscape feels somewhat cold, but that's just preference. One thing I really like about this are the chords at at around the 1:10 to 1:25 part.
>>
>>71162499
Thanks man, I agree with everything you said. Atm I'm not sure about the lead synth sound and I definitely need to make it a bit warmer.
>>
>>71162308
Just have fun with it. I was once at about your "level", and looking back I still really enjoy my music from back then, even if I can easily point out a ton of faults in them that I couldn't see at the time. And don't feel any pressure that you have to make pro-sounding music that will get featured on promo channels. The goal is not to "make it", but to simply make great music. If you do, eventually people will catch on.

As the giver of my only (You), as unsubstantial as it is, I feel obligated to comment on your stuff.

All three songs seem to use the same instruments, so they end up merging in a blur together, I guess they lack identity. It's a vague string of musically arranged (though not always, see next paragraph) notes without any backbone other than the beat.
Also, I think dissonance in all your tracks goes for too long without resolution. There's some dissonance out of nowhere sometimes that doesn't make sense.

Sorry if that sounded too much like chewing you out, but I believe that pointing out the weaker points is better for growth than generic praise.

I feel like giving out more (You)s now. Let's see...

>>71161144
I see you're trying to make something "chill". The frequencies are cold alright, but the mood is made too tense by the piano that is half-consonant, half-dissonant. Another thing is that the melody that comes in first doesn't seem to end on a dominant/tonic, so it trails off on a comma instead of a period. It does so twice: before transitioning into the piano, which makes it more of a seam than a fluid transition, and in the end of the track, which makes it sound cut off. I'd say work on the piano sounding more harmonious and the synth melody maybe sounding more "finite".

>>71159372
Don't rip your hair out just yet. While a bit on the lo-fi side, I can see it fitting the postapocalyptic mood. If they really insist on industiral, try experimenting with the percussion. Use more machinery sounds for it, if all else fails!

Cont.:

>>71154288
The instruments sound really cheesy and cheap. You'll have to replace them with something better, of course. The transition around the minute mark is too sudden, as though they're two different tracks. The quiet bassy melody part could be made more prominent IMO. I'm not sure what you mean by "generic", as you'll need to flesh it out before it can be judged.

>>71154426
Oh hey, sounds great to me. Was pretty pleasant to listen and bob my head to. Well, the transition into the ending at around 1:57 is too abrupt, if I have to judge anything. Maybe the triplet with cymbals in the beginning sounds a bit mechanical, but it might be just me.

Let's all attempt more feedback in this thread!

I agree with >>71163822. You need some more variety in your rhythmic and melodic backbone. It's like what you have is but a piece of what should be a much more grand composition.

I thought that the guitar could use a little wah. With the melodies of that guitar part, I think that instead of just having those notes be sustained, you could add a little rhythmic variation in there by playing the same note a few more times, but not every single time.

0:48-1:35
Same thing about the rhythmic variation. I was thinking that there could be another guitar added, give it some short melodies lasting only a few seconds, and repeat it a little throughout those bits, add a layer in there. Not melodies that are too melodic, not too melodic at all, just more of a rhythmic element, but it won't be too rhythmic, either, it's just to add another layer to the composition.
You need more rhythmic variation in your kick and snare.

Thanks for the feedback, yah I know it's a bit of a jumbled mess. These tracks are from the past few days, I just churned them out so I'll have to go back and build upon the good parts

Recreate your favourite jungle track start to finish. Only then make your own. Can't play by the rules if you don't know 'em.

>>71139100
AFAIK once you buy it you can use it forever. If you want new features then you pay once a year.

Guitar will never die! How's my mix? Been using FL for about a year now, actually. I like to think I'm come a long way.

Add more machine sounding sound effects, maybe add those sound effects where percussive elements could be.
>>
I know there's no drums yet, but I need to know: Does the vocals in this sound okay? Does it work?

I'm becoming immune, so it's hard for me to judge.
