Beginner question here as I come from instrument and band background.

What's the go with Dj's who release mixes with other people's music. For example Dj sprinkles - where the dance floor stands still. I really enjoyed it, however none of the songs were hers. How does it work? Does she have to contact the original artists? She didn't seem to edit them in any way, just transitioned songs well.

Queerificiations and Ruins was the same but she's added some extra stuff. But why not just make your own like midtown 120 blues?

This goes for most Dj's (producers? That make their own stuff), they use a shit load of other people's song. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just curious how it works in the industry and what is and isn't acceptable.

Also, old house like 80's stuff for example, was that all literally drum machines and samples from other songs? Was any of it original? Did anyone make their own bass lines, synth melodies etc like how you can today? Or did technology limit them from making 'original' stuff.

Sorry for what might seem like silly questions. I have utmost respect for electronically produced music, but I certainly hold more respect for artists that make original albums like John Hopkins - immunity or burial etc who make entirely new stuff.

Can someone shed light on this. Not trying to offend, just curious.

mixes being put out disc/label are usually commissioned by the label and they go out and secure the publishing licenses.

they're done for any number of reasons:
dj has a reputation for putting on a good gig and so the label owner wants to put one out. this mix also acts as promotion for the label and artist.

re: older productions, sampling was and is still a big part of it but sticking in bits of your own was and is not uncommon. sampling culture is a different topic.
