Is it bad for me to like Rockit? I know it's not Herbie's best but I still have a soft spot for it.

SORRY! SORRY! Late to the party.

Yeah Herbie is basically top tier funk.

Have you listened to his other Funk albums?
>>
>>71071061
As Herbie's official (not official) spokesperson on here.

No: It is NOT bad for you to like it. The singles were the only highlights on the FutureShock album. Definitely one of Herbie's weaker efforts but Rockit and Autodrive are still great songs.
>>
>>71071082
no, just this one and thrust, what can i do?

Listen to this RIGHT now.
Immediately.

...Or don't, I'm not the boss of you. It's just my favorite Herbie album.

If you like his funk days, also check out: Directstep, Mr. Hands, and Man-Child

Downloading right now

Why is your favorite? where you rank headhunters in his discography?
>>
>>71071234
It's my 2nd favorite, actually.
See pic for the rest of the ratings.

(I'm thinking about raising Crossings/Sextant, I was probably too harsh the first time listening to them all the way through)
>>
>>71071234
Oh you asked WHY it's my favorite, sorry I missed that.

I fucking love the drum work on the album, the brass section does a great job, and it has lots of energy. It's just a fun, dancable album.

My only complaint is that the drums aren't mixed loud enough, they're always panned to the right ear. They should have bumped up the volume a little more for it.

Grant Green got pretty funky in the 70's

everything Lou Donaldson played was funky (from 1969 onward)

Okay now THAT'S pushing it....
But to be fair it could be worse.

Miles' On the Corner is very funky in it's own special way

I guess in Herbie's discography it's most similar to Sextant

Rockit is the best thing Herbie Hancock ever made
>>
>>71071561
>the best thing Herbie Hancock ever made
..No...
No. No. Not in the slightest.

Friend did you only listen to Rockit or something?
>>
>>71071443
>Okay now THAT'S pushing it....
Would you say he has other better albums from that era? I'm not the biggest fan of his earlier jazzier stuff but if you think he's topped Future Shock in his electro funk phase then I'm open to it.
>>
>>71071790
(Sorry for the long post)
Well they're not really from the same Hancock era, per say. You're talking about two completely different styles.

There's his Jazz Funk albums (Rotunda, Headhunters, Thrust, Man-Child, Directstep, Mr. Hands)

His 'disco' albums (Sunlight, Feets Don't Fail Me Now, Monster, Magic Windows, Lite Me Up)

And then there's the straight up electronic/dance albums (FutureShock, Sound System, and Perfect Machine)

Rockit may be the best song of his ELECTRONIC era (though Kalabari and Junku are big contenders) , but in his Jazz-Funk era he has plenty that tops it. Butterfly, Chameleon, Wiggle Waggle, Hang Ups, and Calypso come to mind first for his Jazz Funk songs.

His electronic era didn't really have much interesting stuff.
>>
>>71071853
I didn't really like Sound System back when I heard it, to me it sounded a little too Art of Noise. But I'll give Perfect Machine a go, thanks.

What's your take on Sextant? It's the one older album I keep coming back to. Puts me in a mood I guess.
>>
>>71072162
Sextant I need to give a re listen to because first few listens I didn't like it too much.

Rain Dance I still dislike, Hidden Shadows grew a lot on me (to the point I put it in the playlist), and Hornets I'm still mixed on.

THat was part of his experimental trilogy (Sextant, Crossings, and Mwandishi).

If we're talking about his standard jazz/bop then my favorites would be Inventions and Dimensions and Empyrean Isles
>>
>>71071853
>he still hasn't realized mwandishi era herbie is the best
>>
>>71072162

Sextant in Herbieanon's bottom 7 is frowntown

It's the Herbie-album I probably listen to the most personally. I wouldn't say it's better than Herbie's 60's post-bop classics and it's so different from the funkier albums that it's kind of hard to compare, but it's a really good album in that kind of murky early 70's fusion style that still has a heavy Bitches Brew -influence
>>
>>71072255
We weren't talking about that Era at the time.
We were talking about his funk/disco/dance eras.

The trilogy is growing on me, don't worry.
>>
>>71071598
>rockit is popular

Pretty much what >>71072396 said but I would definitely urge you to give Inventions a listen as well.

...My man I'm not gonna sugar coat this....
This is....this is fucking awful.

The repeating piano note is annoying as hell for the first few minutes. This song should NOT have a vocal line. it works on his other ones, but sure as hell not this one.

But still: COMING!
>>
>>71073022
>The repeating piano note is annoying as hell for the first few minutes. This song should NOT have a vocal line. it works on his other ones, but sure as hell not this one.
You have no idea of music Thoery.
>>
>>71073088
I'm still learning it. Taking it in college.
>>
>>71069142
I know this is more far-out and not AS funky, but Ostinato (Mwandishi) and Hidden Shadows (Sextant) are great tracks
>>
>>71073022

heh, I'm not going to defend it (although I enjoy Chris Dave's drumming quite a bit), just curious how it sounds to you - Casey Benjamin's vocoder stylings with the Robert Glasper Experiment are generally pretty grating, so wanted to hear what someone with a decent appreciation for late 70's cheesy Herbie thinks of that
>>
>>71073104
that's what I'm talking about - Hidden Shadows is great
>>
>>71073115
I'm giving it a re listen and I was too harsh the first time. The song definitely picks up but the first couple minutes aren't too good.

I'm never TOO big of a fan when Herbie uses vocoder either, it works on a few tracks but not often.

Plus I've heard other versions of butterfly with a vocal line and I never really enjoyed it. The center section (without the vocasls) was probably the best part of the song. Really like the kit sounds too.
>>
>>71071255
how do you rate the live albums not on the chart, anyway?

I personally think that Flood is easily among the top 5 70's Herbie-albums and Dedication is also underrated - both probably underrated due to only being released in Japan for a long time
>>
>>71073184
I've just been through studio so far since I don't know which live to touch.

I know for sure Flood and VSOP are gonna get listens, but until I started listening to Herbie I wasn't really fond of Live albums so this'll be a first for me.
>>
>>71073226

jazz is definitely a genre where live recordings deserve their fair share of attention - you get more improvisation and when the live happened after the studio recording you often get cool new development and ideas

Dedication is worth it if only for the groundbreaking electronic track Nobu that Herbie hasn't recorded elsewhere and Flood is damn tight and sounds great for a live album - if it wasn't for the applause, you could mistake it for a 70's Herbie studio album even
>>
>>71073618
i was actually gonna include dedication but I had to cut it so I could get an even number for the topsters chart.

It was good for me but nothing special. It would probably be lower on my chart.
>>
>>71073798
I guess Dedication has somewhat limited things going for it - Nobu is a groundbreaking nugget in it's own right and Maiden Voyage and Dolphin Dance are cool solo versions for people who love the 60's stuff - there's relatively little "Herbie on acoustic piano" material released since the 60's, so it fills that niche

The electronic Cantaloupe Island is mostly a waste of 14 minutes, IMHO
>>
>>71072329
>>Whenever something is popular that automatically makes it the best song they've made.
i never said that

rockit is the best because rockit is the best

you're just mad that family guy knows about it too, otherwise it would be you're NUMBER 1 qt gril slayer, admit it.

relatively obscure Finnish 70's dirty jazz-funk coming through

So are you gonna explain why it's best or....?

Also I don't watch family guy anymore. I would have never known they used it if you didn't tell me.
