The debut solo album reveals dego's profound love for the simple physical pleasure of a perfect beat, but also his boundless curiosity for reinventing the most sophisticated elements of classic funk and electro.

Within every single song, Dego manages to take listeners on a journey across time. Late Night Fright, for example, begins by harkening back to the heyday of dub and drum 'n' bass, the club oriented music of Dego's youth, before slowly dissolving into a dreamy jazzy soundscape, mirroring Dego's own musical evolution.

Elsewhere on the album, Dego joins forces with a carefully-selected roster of singers and instrumental collaborators. We Are Virgo is a collaboration with jazz multi-instrumentalist Kaidi Tatham, that blends several time signatures, drawing on a rich palette of analog synthesizer sounds. A funky tangle of old-school acid house arpeggios, mixed with a bouncing soul groove, featuring vocals by up and coming British singer Obenewa, All That She Knows

Guests include Georgia Anne Muldrow, Taylor Mcferrin, Sharlene Hector and many more.

This young turntablist hailing from Marseille, France had already established himself as a live powerhouse of improvisational creativity.

With Zygosis, he extended this reputation into the recording arena. Employing turntables, sampler, and tape decks to plunder and play with the choicest bits from a century of music, ErikM skims musical history like a scavenger, collecting usable crumbs and scraps from its enticing banquet. His discriminating but unprejudiced palate places Bartok, Kagel, Queen, Napalm Death and Paul Anka on the same workbench—all bearing equal weight as grist for the musical mill.

The familiar jump-cut milieu of turntablism, with its animated scratches, background crackle, and quick-change transitions, provides the crucible for Zygosis’ creation.

These 27 quizzically titled/untitled tracks find him unceremoniously paring symphonies and pop songs alike to a few referential measures, extracting allusive sounds from classic soundtracks and electro-acoustic recordings, dropping them into a piece like sonic bombs or looping them into textural swells, selectively sampling monologues and discarding all surplus (con)text.

Take a couple of blokes who could pass for those two Geordie builders who drink in your local, put them together in a studio and what do you get? If the two in question are Smoove and Turrell the answer isn’t a new stud wall and the faint whiff of battered Mars bars but Antique Soul.

In other words a heavyweight northern soul-influenced collaboration with the gritty credibility that other nu-soul pairing Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriweather just can’t seem to muster and more crossover power than Moses at the Red Sea. Because when this is on, it’s really on.

Antique Soul is packed with either bangers or tracks that have that sure sign of a classic – the sense that you’ve heard it somewhere before – although actually you haven’t. Even if it does stray from the righteous path of funk into 80s ‘saxy-land’ at times, Antique Soul demands your attention.

This New Zealand-born keyboardist has been paying his dues behind the scenes for a while now but has been most recognised recently for being a key figure in the West London broken beat scene.

Using that close-knit mob of wildly talented associates to his full advantage, Clive-Lowe resoundingly executes a musical vision that incorporates his jazz background and penchant for incorporating cosmic soul, Afro-Cuban rhythms and anything else that tickles his fancy. Evidence of this eclectic melting pot approach is the stuttery "Slide, where he flaunts a fractured groove that explores the nether region between house and p-funk.

Far from aimless noodling however, Tides Arising also delivers in the songwriting department. Anchored by a stirring vocal performance by Abdul Shyllon and Kaidi Tathams killer app moog bass, the undeniable thump of an immediate standout.

The two-disc album Two Pages furthers the investigations of Parallel Universe, continues the experiments with live instrumentation, thanks to two string quartets and a three-piece horn section with mellow, orchestral arrangements, halfway between Curtis Mayfield and disco divas, perhaps reminiscent of the styles that turned Roni Size and LTJ Bukem into millionaires.

Decontextualized through an arrangement of harp, choir and pian that is relaxing, atmospheric lounge music ranging though shameless bacharach pop, African percussions and dancing violins, but the main theme is beaten by the piano as a mechanical pattern, and is rounded up by a fantastic clarinet solo.

Returning to the "classical" arrangement of Planetaria, but with a festive, fanfare-like attitude (not too distant from Philip Glass's minimalist scores). All the tracks of the first disc are heavily imbued with jazz. So it is appropriate that the last words are carried by the romantic saxophone that highlights Normal Changing World. This first disc is as baroque as a psychedelic album in 1967.

The second, all-instrumental and more experimental disc challenges the arduous structures with the eight-minute percussive pastiche and other melodic offerings. As avantgarde composers, the duo is definitely up to the task, but, at least in their intentions, this is the Ummagumma of drum'n'bass.
