What's the "most despised" band there?
Also, why nylon picks? Seriously interested... i read they get brittle over time. Also, i never liked them cuz they're really soft.

Most despised band is five finger death punch.
I never really noticed anything different about nylon picks, they're cheaper at my local store though and they have grips so I'm all for them.

Correct, they take you to a 404 message
>they haven't been in the OP for years
They have, how new are you?
>>
>>71041468
Yeah, i get that. I was just looking for some insight as to why someone who likes them would use them. Just curious and trying to broaden my perspective. That's why i specified i was asking seriously. I mean, i use gator grip 1.5mm. I prefer the tortex 1mm thickness, but like the shape of the gator grip. I use the 1.5 instead of the closer 1.14 size specifically because it's green. So any answer to "why nylon" will not sound stupid to me.

I thought that might have been the band. I just wasn't sure. I got some of them nylon picks like 10 years ago from my mom in my xmas stocking. I thought the grips were neat, but she got the ultra thin ones. I never tried any thicker ones.
>>
>>71041629
He called ME new...
>>
>>71041603
I usually get around 0.60mm picks. I prefer nylon for guitar because the flexibility makes strumming chords easier. For bass I like gator grips (same thickness) because they are a bit stiffer but are still somewhat flexible.

I use thick ones cuz when i was like 13 and started playing i thought i was a tough guy. Strumming like a maniac with a "extra heavy" confetti fender pick. My first guitar has wear on the fucking fretboard like 22nd fret up. I was such a retard. I never got used to thin picks after, however now i pick with a really light touch, and hardly ever wear picks down.

Lacks durability, i suppose. Metal parts wear, rust, corrode, etc. Tuners or bridge that wont stay in tune, maybe. Poor quality control so you'd have to fix shit when it's new like jagget fret ends. I wouldn't consider shitty hardware or pickups, because you can change it. If the neck is good and you can always repair anything. Id say overall a "shitty" guitar would be one you can't properly set up without putting new parts on it.

Why the fuck are there no guitars on the market with one single humbucker in the bridge position? That's a popular setup that pro's use but they usually always have to have them custom made for them that way. There's a huge market of people who want simple rigs like that. Why do the only ones out there have to be bottom of the barrel epiphone les paul jr's and $2000+ custom shops. It's less fucking wiring and labor.

I've always been told that this is good song to learn for beginners.

https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/m/misc_computer_games/final_fantasy_8_-_breezy_tab.htm

I'm holding down the "e" and "G" strings on the second fret and it's really awkward for me because I'm supposed to leave the "B" and "D" strings untouched, but my fingers are touching these other strings unwillingly and I'm getting a very ugly sound as a result. What should I do? Do you have any advice for me?
>>
>>71042600
I paid $526 for it after tax and shipping from a GC in Indiana. I don't know why they didnt have it listed much higher as there is literally zero cosmetic wear on it. The person who had it before must have either never used it or waited too long to be able to return it.

Any recommendations for a good audio interface?
I'm looking for one with 24bit 192kHz and a midi input as well as enough xlr/instrument cable inputs to be able to connect both a mic and guitar at the same time.

I would prefer it to but USB3 with it's own power supply but I'm having trouble finding both of those in the same instrument.

I'm currently considering a Scarlett 2i4 2nd gen but it doesn't have it's own power supply and is usb 2 as well as a BEHRINGER U-PHORIA UMC404HD which has it's own power supply but is usb 2 as well.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Wait, that's not right. I just checked a live video and he's doing it without a capo. Which probably means he's in an alternate tuning since that second chord would be an uncomfortable stretch.

I googled the tuning the band uses and it's FACGCE, but you can do it fine in EADGCE just by tuning the B string up a semitone. Less hassle

so you the chord shapes would be:
X 0 2 0 0 0
3 x 0 2 0 5

Same notes and everything, just a different place to play them. Arpeggiate them in the same pattern

>>71046008
It's not in standard, but I tried that first. The second chord is doable, but it's uncomfortable as hell. At least on a classical neck

I was reading the Mick Goodrick book that's in the OP and he says to practice on one string only to get the hang of sliding like that before working on position playing. It helps you get more comfortable with the entire range of single strings and to more easily combine them later. He was also talking about practicing this with different combinations of 1, 2, 3, and 4 fingers. Good stuff.

Is there such a bass that comes with Precision and Music Man pickups? Maybe even with a Rickenbacker pickup on the neck?
The Jazz Bass tone would be missing but i dont care for that funky tone.

Anon other /gg/ mentioned the Jaguar bass that combines a precision and a jazz bass
So i wondered on that same idea.

I've played my moms 20 year old Ibanez which was about 500$ for a couple of years now. When strolling through the guitar shop i fell in love with a 350$ guitar. I am seriously thinking about buying it for the following reasons:

- I like their looks so much
- It has an onboard pickup
- To get something new and refreshing

I played it briefly and it felt good.

According to different reviews it's a good guitar and an especially good value for the money. But still i am hesitant because i don't know if it's worth to buy a beginner tier guitar as an advanced guitarist. I currently can't afford to buy a high end guitar.

There is is a video on youtube where the guy compares a 150$ guitar to a 5000$ guitar and obviously the difference is quite significant. I wonder how a 350$-500$ guitar would perform in this comparison.

Sandberg do a P and MM model I think. Fender have made models with p and humbucker pickups on a p bass body. You could order something custom if you are struggling to get the right combo of features.

Rosewood bridge and fretboard and the rest is mahogani and maple.

the difference will be minimal, to the point where it's probably just cosmetic shit and personal preference. i went from a 65 pre cbs strat to a $300 ibanez when i was a teenager. guess which one had the better neck and fretboard.

Its me, the bass anon from the other day who had the first run JagBass.

The answer is yes. Here are some options.

Schecter's 'philsophy' is to make upgraded Fender instruments.

And so they make the Diamond-P plus and its honestly a 10/10 bass. Much better than the current jag bass though the new jagbass is good looking.

http://www.schecterguitars.com/bass/diamond-p-plus-1036-detail

This one has p/j hybrids.
http://www.schecterguitars.com/bass/cv-4-ivory-detail

Last you could get a bass with EMG-HZ pickups like this which is just a humbucker and EMG makes a split coil P-bass pickup in the thunderbird style housing.

hi /gg/ beginner anon here, I'm searching for an affordable entry level guitar, I basically want to be able to switch from twinkly shit to skramz to meddl. So I've been thinking of either buying a Squier Affinity Tele or Yamaha Pacifica 112V but I'm really unsure. Also getting one used isn't an option since there are only two guys in my area who sell second-hand guitars and all of them are EMG loaded LTDs. What guitar would you recommend?

But I thought this video was alright. #1 made me laugh. I always feel unbelievably awkward playing at music stores because it never feels like you can get into playing a song. It's always stupid posturing and random noodles.

I think what bothers me is that it's always so goddamn quiet in there and everyone can here every nuance of what you're doing even if you're at volume level 1 with the gain down. I like when there is store music playing honestly I just jam along to it.

You can get a warmoth body that has p bass and mm routing that will fit a fender neck.

For the rick you'd probably have to do it yourself or pay a tech.

Controls for that could be ridiculous, youd need a minimum of 3 volumes and 1 tone knob, and blending wouldnt be an option if you wanted it(unless you only chose to blend 2 pickups.

I want to know if the BASS can be heard clearly.

peavey valveking or bugera trirec?
>>
>>71055648
If you play super high gain metal get the trirec. If you play anything less than that get the valveking. Bugera is gonna be lower quality but you won't get the kind of distortion you need out of the valveking

Is 170$ on a Vox Mark III Teardrop a good price or should I try to go lower?. The guitar is as new, almost never used.

removed the low mids (200hz) boost, boosted around 800hz. how is it sounding now?

https://clyp.it/nqjcnpe3

it had compression already, was even more dead without it
also it had a boost in the 2k (where the natural sound already had a small peak) which gave a nice bright picking sound, should i boost it more stronger?
>>
>>71055648
5150 combo.
>>
>>71055708
a lot better. its still peaking somewhere in the lows, put it through a spectrum analyzer and see which freqs are spiking. only in louder parts of the song mind you. maybe turn overall bass -2db down.

It has a nice fat boost in 110hz, should i take it off/even it? If it take it off it doesnt fill the mix's bass range; i mute the bass and dont feel a big loss in the bass frequences.

Can the bass impro during the solo be heard clearly?

>only in louder parts of the song mind you.
Theres only bass on the loud parts, the parts with drums

Who /looper/ here?

I'm wondering what you guys think of loop pedals in general. I just got pic related which I'm super excited about since it's pretty easy to make full fleshed songs with, with up to four loops you can overdub. Plus the reverse solo effect is actually p cool.

I also found out they discontinued this pedal which is surprising since it's pretty much considered the top of the line along with Pigtronix Infinity and the Boss 505. I had to drive two hours to a music store to even find it.
>>
>>71055876
Thats because all you got is boomy side of the frequencies. Im not sure if thats the way the bass itself sounded or if you just edited it poorly but it lakcs any thickness on its own. Way too scooped. I mean if you like it that way, thats fine but you need to mix it accordingly then and dont expect it to have a lot of presence in the mix outside of the lows themselves

If I'm a first time buyer looking to pick up a bass guitar, what should I be looking to spend at an entry level? I don't want to overpay severely but I also don't want to buy absolute shit. I'm including shit like amps and other equipment

>>
>>71055918
Ah i understand. Thats the way i edited it. I was trying to match a specific album's mixing, where the bass sounds bassy and scooped, leaving more mids for guitars, but you can still hear the notes.
Which frequencies should i boost for "thickness"?

>Way too scooped. I mean if you like it that way, thats fine but you need to mix it accordingly
How do i do that?

Thanks for helping

Pic related was only 200 bucks and it sounds awesome through my para driver di. Has a really cool metallic tone and slapping sounds really fat. I don't play slap but sometimes it's nice for an accent. The tone is really good.
>>
>>71056065
Played one of these at my local musicstore and I gotta say that this bass is a great buy
>>
>>71055982
I'd like to spend within a grand, but I can go up from that. I mostly just don't want this to be something I try and pick up and the equipment just collects dust in a corner, so I don't want to go in to deep on it.

Not sure what genre I want to play primarily, I just enjoy the tone of the instrument. I guess my favorite bassist is Trevor Dunn who I love in Mr. Bungle (Melvins are pretty dope too). I like punk a lot too, namely mission of burma, big black, and firehose. I guess part of why I want to learn to play an instrument is because I really enjoy listening to music so the idea of learning to play and create it is appealing to me.

Buy used. Everyone does so, and that way you can flip it one year down the road for hte same price you paid now. Get a used Fender P-bass for around 600$ and spend the remaining 400$ on a combo amp with two 10" speakers. Avoid 15"s. If you intend to gig with the amp try to get one that has at least 300 watts.

thickness = lower mids = 350hz

There is nothing wrong with what you are doing, but that way bass will merely fill up its designated low freqs in the mix and you don't get any highs let alone harmonics to come out. allow some mids into the mix, bass is all about the mids despite what you might think.

also its always better to turn bass overall a bit less loud and have it less discernable than to have it way too loud like it is now.

Thanks for the advice (as well as whoever I didn't quote). Not to press, but is it worth it to go five string over four? Seems like a five string just offers more range, but I know plenty of bass players stick to 4 and do just fine. Is there a significant difference?

Oh oh oh
>>
>>71056459
Also - make sure you cut everything below 60hz.

>>71056463
I started with a five, nothing wrong with that. But you won't have much use for it in the music you specified, punk stuff and all. Plus finding a bass that has a useable fifth string is a bit of a challenge because they are wonky and too loose more often than not no matter how tight strings you get on them. And that includes 99% of fender basses.

All you get with the fifth string are 4 extra lower notes anyway. Start with a classic and work your way up if you see it fit. Most people don't.

I also went down from 5 to 4.
>>
>>71056463
The fretboard is wider so it is a bit harder to play. The extra notes are nice but not necessary. i think they're a meme, but I'm really not much of a bass player, i just play it when tracking.

>>71056501

Two important last bits of info, I am assuming you are an absolute gear noob - P-basses are not exactly light, might want to find yourself a nice comfy strap. And no matter what, invest into a set of new strings whether you get a used or a new bass, and have them install them for you and set the bass up (adjust string height etc etc). 99% of bass sound is in the fresh strings.

And obviously - for a beginner is far more important to have an instrument that you like in visual terms, shape, color etc. The way it looks. You won't know what a great tone is straight away anyway, might as well go with something that will inspire you to pick it up when you see it.

Have fun.

Plus hand placement is hard as shit on TOM bridges. On hardtails and trems I can rest my hand on the bridge without muting the low e. On TOM the bridge piece is so thin that you pretty much just have to float or gtfo

fucking hell, finally people who actually have experience with Squiers. My Squier is a fantastic guitar, especially for the price. Granted, the original owner swapped out the bridge, nut and the bridge pup, but I played on classic vibe squier teles and they are a fucking blast for the money, unbelievable quality. Yeah, you just have to endure elitist pricks snickering at you for having squier written on your headstock, but that's a small price to pay.

After switching out all that shit it better be decent.

Squiers are fine first guitars, but not something you keep playing for years unless it's only to try and get your dick wet every now and then.

>And obviously - for a beginner is far more important to have an instrument that you like in visual terms, shape, color etc. The way it looks. You won't know what a great tone is straight away anyway, might as well go with something that will inspire you to pick it up when you see it.
Definitely this and also—it needs to feel good in your hands. If you don't like to hold it or the action is way too high off the bat you will probably get frustrated when you could be learning your instrument.

Playability is way more important than tone in the early stages. Your tone will probably be shit regardless until you can properly fret/mute the strings from buzzing/coordinate your right hand so it's more important to try and get a bass that doesn't fight you on these things.

You'll be surprised to know just how much your right hand "touch" affects the tone of the bass. It's very noticeable even hitting a string with say the tip of your finger vs. the pad of your finger.
