Do you wear earplugs at shows?
>>
>>71037854
Depends on the show
>>
>>71037854
Usually yeah, but I wear decent ones unlike the trash in your pic

Live music from your basement is inferior to studio music from your basement. Live music from the concert is superior to studio music from the basement.
>>
>>71037891
>>
>>71037854
Sometimes. Depends on the band's genre, how close I am (if general admission, I'm in the front row because I'm short as fuck), how much I like the band. Sometimes I just forget to buy/bring some.

Those ear plugs are fuckin nasty tho. Get wax ear plugs.
>>
>>71037854
No
>>
Listening to sound above 94dBSPL for an hour will damage your hearing permanently.
Concerts can be up to 120dB throughout.
If you don't wear protection you're going to be deaf as fuck when you're older.
>>
I saw The Body and if I hadn't had earplugs I'd be deaf right now
>>
>>71037874
no way they're hotdogs
>>
>>71037854
not usually. i got high quality earplugs for Swans but when i tried them it just didn't sound right so i took them out. my ears were fine no ringing or anything
>>
>>71037864
this

im trying to get in the habit of at least bringing them for every show. i wore them when i saw swans, if i hadnt have i would have been deaf.

saw danny brown and car seat head rest and didnt bring them for either. i should have though, those were louder than i expected.
>>
itt pussies
>>
I haven't for the last 4 years, however after seeing a drone metal house show last year I've had slight tinnitus, got myself a pair of good musician earplugs soon after

what are a good brand of earplugs to buy?
>>
>>71038279
yeah, a couple years back i saw a noise house show and this one guitar improv guy fucked up my hearing for a solid month. i've been really anal retentive about my hearing ever since.

based tinnitusbro
>>
>>71038317
It's always the house shows I've been to that have been the loudest, seen Swans and Boris and Dinosaur Jr but it was the smaller local ones that really fucked up my hearing
>>
Rec me some good earplugs that don't fuck with sound quality.
>>
Wore my etymotics for the first time at a hardcore show. I recommend it, vocals were actually easier to hear, but backup vocals sometimes seemed kind of awkward because they are typically quieter and the instruments were quieter
>>
saw the voidz in the front row, next to the speakers. my ears rung for the rest of the week
>>
>>71038957
When I was young I used to feel so cool for the next 2 days or so as my ears rung, realized how fucked it is now though
>>
yeah, I got custom made ones, I use them with 9dB filters
most loud shows actually sound way better with them, everything is much clearer when the ears aren't pushed way too hard and kinda 'distort'
>>
>>71039003
Same, in retrospect wtf was I thinking
>>
do you wear a blindfold at the movies?

>>

If my ears are fine after seeing Swans, Boris, Mono, Melvins, Dinosaur Jr., and stuff like that without earplugs, does that just mean I'm already hard of hearing?

Depends who and where

Last I saw Death Grips, I forgot them and fucked my hearing for three days. That combined with a hundred other concerts before it and shooting without ear protection has given me tinnitus.

Hearing loss is cumulative, you definitely don't want to be like me. Wear plugs.

actually i wear earplugs at the movies, they are way too damn loud

I bring them to shows, and wear them if I have to. I have these 30db noise cancelling ones. It's great when commuting on a bus and trying to catch some Zs. Though I also wear them during rehearsal.

>>
Going to my first concert a little nervous but pumped it's Volbeat, a7x, and Metallica. Me and my buds bought general admission and I'm nervous after my cousin told me he ruined his hearing at a concert. Is Metallica loud as fuck these days and should I wear ear plugs?
>>
>>71041388

thank you for reply. I will investigate
>>
>>71041442
Probably should, but if it's your first concert there's not much to worry about really, hearing damage accumulates over time
>>
At my tinnitus bros: it can also be caused by high blood pressure. Mine has gotten a lot less bad since I got my BP down.
Yes, you can have high BP if you're not fat.

absolutely obligatory for metal shows if you actually want to hear anything

>>
>>71042651
Thanks dude. I already have mild tinnitus, it's not really irritating at all, but I really don't want it to worsen
>>
>>71042490
I'm 60 years old. Do you really think I haven't heard everything that music has to offer?

Fuck off, child
>>
>>71042743
Just want to throw in my two cents. I've tried the hearos (actually the er20s, but they're actually the same product with different branding) and didn't like them. The sound was fine, but they were pretty damn uncomfortable. I just bought some Alpine musicsafe earplugs which are like 15 bucks and absolutely awesome in both comfort and sound. Plus, they have changeable filters.
>>
what are the best earplugs to get, anyways?

been playing with my band at high volume in a closed room and we usually end with our ears ringing for a while
>>
>>71039907
>tfw Ive ALWAYS had tinnitus,
>>
If the band is going to be using distorted electric guitars I'll usually wear earplugs. I've had only a few bad experiences with intensely loud concerts in which I regretted not having earplugs, but those few occasions made me always want to bring a pair if the band is going to get loud and use distortion.

Having said that, I've gotten by just fine at loud concerts like Death Grips, but even then I eventually had to put in the pair I brought because my hearing started going to shit momentarily because they were so fucking bassy.

I'm a musician and while I don't play drums, primarily anyway, I'm really paranoid about hearing loss. I have a wild drummer friend who is only in his twenties who has noticeable hearing damage. The same guy went to see fucking Godspeed You! Black Emperor live front row without earplugs. They've been incredibly loud live in recent years.
>>
I ride the bus so I always have my ear buds with me and if I ever need earplugs I just pop those in. Then it also looks like I'm just listening to something else.

>>
>>71043409
I had the *exact* same experience first time I saw them. It's terrifying watching literally everyone you can see pull out ear plugs at the same time. By the end I was ducking behind people trying to get away from the cymbal crashes wrecking my ears. Never totally recovered from it.
>>
yes

next question
>>
>>71043554
It sounds like you should've just left at that point.
>>
>>71043454
that's awesome (not your fucked ears, but the fact you got to see them live); I've been to lots of shows but never any harsh noise or shoegaze although I am mostly interested in those genres. Def gonna wear some earplugs when I do though. Tinnitus is a scary thing, and I already get it from playing guitar loudly.
>>
>>71043454
Lmfao. Did they play the holocaust section when you saw them? If so I pity your poor ears.
>>
What a bunch of snowflake pussies, I have attended concerts for 45 years and never wore earplugs and i don't have tinnitus nor measurable hearing loss. Just go to the damn show and enjoy it.
>>
>>71045365
you're a walking joke if you actually believe this
>>
>>71045440
aside from normal hearing range loss for my age. Sure i can't hear 20 - 20k but attending concerts didn't make me even remotely close to deaf. I don't require any hearing augmentation devices to hear. And i still enjoy music as much as I did in my teens -30's
>>

it limits your hearing of the music. I don't pay good money to go see a live performance of bands I love to not enjoy the full experience of experiencing their art live.

Do you wear condoms when you masturbate?
>>
>>71045440
>tfw been going to hardcore/punk shows since I was 8
>tfw no hearing problems at all and I'm about to turn 30 next week
You don't need no pussy ass earplugs in the pit son.
>>
>>71045573
Wrong again. With good quality earplugs you will arguably hear the performance better, as there is little to no frequency range compromised and the volume will be at a level more suitable to distinguishing individual parts rather than simply a wall of noise around your hear. You really have no clue what you're talking about do you.
>>
>>71045620
>>71045537
you're a fucking moron, plain and simple, if you place your hearing under the masculine imagine that you wont be buffering by not protecting your ears, because no one even finds it impressive
>>
>>71037854
Will cheap orange ones like these do or shud I go to a music shop?
>>
>>71045573
Wrong.
You lose detail at high volume because your brain adapts and so do your ears, because they're trying to prevent damage.
>>
>>71045623
what is considered good quality earplugs? Sounds like a scam to relieve the gullible from money in their wallet. Kinda like monster cables.
>>
>>71045601
This is a terrible analogy.
Unless you're jelqing or something masturbation doesn't do long term (and short term) damage.
>>71045620
Enjoying being deaf by 30.
>Inb4 'I'm over 30'
no you aren't.
This thread didn't somehow attract every over 30 person on the board.
>>71045656
The cheapies work. If you're going regularly, I'd get better ones. When I saw Wovenhand, it was loud enough that it still affected my hearing through the cheapies.
>>
>>71045646
It has nothing to do with masculinity or being"impressive" If you actually wear earplugs to see a fucking band play then you're a giant sensitive retard, plain and simple.
>>
>>71045693
There's a pretty wide range. Everything from custom-fitted ones that cost upwards of $500 to the ones around 15 that have changeable filters and stuff.
>>
>>71045720
Nah, you're a macho faggot. I'll take decades of peer reviewed studies over your mentally handicapped whining.
>>
>>71045720
>i-it has nothing to d-do with my fragile m-masculinity, you're just a giant s-sensitive retard!

yeah ok grandad, tell it to the objective fact that any exposure to a sound over 90db for a prolonged period causes irreversible hearing loss

your ears don't give two shits about the pathetic tough guy image you are trying to portray
>>
>>71045675
The loudness is part of the experience. Did mom and dad let you ride your bicycle without a helmet? My guess is "no"
>>
>>71045749
I'm guessing yours did because you've clearly had some kind of traumatic head injury to unironically come up with the reasoning that hearing loss is 'part of the experience"
>>
>>71045656
And I'm going to be seeing swans next month but I don't go to many shows.
>>
>>71045732
>I'll take decades of peer reviewed studies

>>

>>
>>71045782

yes..I rode my bike without a helmet. but never have I experienced any type of head injury. Parents of our time didn't fond and hover over everything we did. We didn't sanitize everything before we touched it. We played outside and came inside when it got dark. And we went to concerts without earplugs.
>>
>>71045783

you really think that? No it isn't nor was it.
I can pretty much be certain when i saw Cheap Trick in 1979 it was every bit as loud as shows you have seen. And also fairly certain that when I saw the ZOOTV Concert it was as loud as well and the Van Halen 5150 tour.
>>

I'm going to buy earplugs right now, thank you man. Have a good night.

I went to an MSI concert 15 years ago and my ears haven't stopped ringing. It keeps me awake at night. There's no way to fix it.
People's bodies are different, like it or not, and playing the fucking lottery to see if you're one of the lucky ones is pretty goddamned stupid. I'm surprised you didn't stick a fork in an electrical outlet.

Uh oh, someone doesn't like my taste in music as a teenager so he ignored everything else I said.
I don't think you've got grounds to talk about gay bands, dude.

Van Halen has never been a flagship band for the gay community

Neither has MSI.
Not the guy you're responding to.
I'm gay as fuck and I hadn't heard of MSI until I started browsing /mu/.
There have been rumors about Roth being gay for decades though.

Yes, I do wear earplugs, and I suggest everyone does (unless they are far away enough from the speakers where it is not needed).

I was upfront at this show (link below) and Cashmere Cat decided to do a 1/32 loop on his CDJ which resulted in this deafening noise, but luckily with my earplugs I was saved from guaranteed hearing damage.

Starts at 39 seconds, you'll know when it is.

Offhand HIV/AIDS "redpill":

It most likely came from humans coming into contact with infected chimpanzee blood through bushmeat (eating wild African animals) in the 20th century Congo. However, it seems to have entered the human population before, but because of the relative lack of contact with other villages, it would kill a family or village and no longer be contagious.

Colonialism exacerbated the conditions for HIV transmission and infection. The Congolese people were essentially enslaved by Belgium. Injuries were even more prevalent than they already are when you're living off the land (cutting people's hands off was stupidly common). People were put to work, largely producing rubber, and were given less time to hunt and tend their crops, giving way to mass hunger, which made them both feebler and more liable to doing shit like eating raw fuckin' chimp, because they were starving and didn't realize the risk. Later in the colonization of the Congo, villagers lined up to be vaccinated by Belgian nurses, who re-used the needles between "patients". The Congo was also developed, facilitating far greater travel between villages. Prostitution also became more common.

HIV is thought to have been brought to the US through Haiti, as many Haitians were migrant workers in the Congo, and they would come back home infected. It predominantly spread among drug abusers and males who have sex with males. In all fairness, they didn't know there was a risk and straight couples were bad at protection at the time, too.

The US government acted slowly to the epidemic, which only allowed it to spread further. Hence the AIDS crisis.

The history of HIV is objectively fucked up and it can't just be blamed on "promiscuous gays" or "dumb Africans" as a one-dimensional reading of history.

Always, 90% of the concerts I go to are retardedly loud. I use pic related for both concerts and band practice.

I already have a light form of tinnitus, not planning on making it any worse.

I didn't bring any to a melt banana concert. Damn. They were about as loud as Swans. Fucked my ears up good, so now i always try to bring some
>>
People can handle different amounts of sounds depending on your ear canals. I usually use earplugs that suppress 9db. And 15db on louder concerts. A friend is a bit more sensitive and needs around 25db-earplugs.
I work with music daily so it's a necessity to use earplugs or else I will get totally exhausted at the end of the day.
>>
>>71049235
Not that guy but they have filters in them to lower the sound evenly across all frequencies to preserve the way the music sounds. They don't reduce the sound as much because of that but they don't ruin the sound of the concert for you.
>>
Anyone used these ones before?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MEE876O

How are they?
>>
>>71037854
Saw Death Grips without any ear plugs, my ears were ringing for several days and for one of those, everything was muffled.
Loud noises still cause a high-pitched ringing in my ears so if I dont wear earplugs at concerts all I can hear is that ringing.
>>
>>71045656
You can get better ones for a couple of quid online. The sound is slightly better than the diy foam ones and they are easier to insert.
>>
>>71052162
Same here, except the lasting effects weren't as serious. But yeah, muffled for about a day, and decreased hearing in left ear ever since. I wear plugs at every show now.
>>
To everyone in this thread saying "I never wear plugs and my ears are fine", when was the last time you had your hearing tested? Have you ever had your hearing tested?

tip for everybody with tinnitus

cup your ears with your palms and gently tap the rear part of your head with your fingers, it will stop the tinnitus for a few minutes in case you're having trouble sleeping.

don't ask, it just works
>>
Only to festivals but I don't wear them for every artist. I saw Arca at Day For Night last year and it was rhe loudest fucking act I've ever seen and I've been going to shows for over 20 years. I'm thinking that if I hadn't been wearing them, I may have had to leave. It was painfully loud.
