it's why (i imagine) wayne coyne decided to work with miley cyrus. it gets him new fans. his loyal fans won't care. the only people who will complain are lukewarms who pirated all of their Flaming Lips albums anyway.

You're forgetting how many turbo-normies there are out there.

To be clear, BoC are not at all what i'd consider inaccessible but some people legit can't get past stuff without vocals or a clear verse chorus structure.

you say that like his first album or two aren't literally just discount BoC. his later work is still a shittier BoC, but his first few albums are like he was trying to copy them as closely as possible.
