I'd just start with the 'Best Of', see what tracks you liked from it, then listen to the albums where the tracks came from.

i think marr is a great guitarist and i actually quite like some of the instrumentals but morrisey is such an enormous hack that he just ruins everything

Overrated, but a great singles band if there ever was one. Moz is an overrated lyricist, but I love his voice, and Marr is consistently better than you expect.
Meat Is Murder> Hatful of Hollow (if it counts)> Strangeways> The Smiths> The Queen is Dead

I find The Queen is Dead to be a complete fucking plod with only a few bright spots, while Meat is Murder is their only album that I can listen to the whole way through
