And it's literally just okay. There's nothing special about them, in fact, it's a fairly common sound in the indie scene, and there are many who have done it better.

Are they just celebrated for doing the indie rock / trip hop sound first or something?

you don't realize how unimaginative the indie-rock scene was at this time: every band was playing post-grunge or/and britpop. OK Computer changed everything.

this is blatantly not true. radiohead were very talented and creative and they happened to break through, but to believe that they were the only ones making interesting indie rock at the time is comically wrong.
